I never liked Madden as coach of the Raiders, as they were a major rival of the Dolphins in those days, but as a broadcaster he was an unparalleled star. He was not only a brilliant student of the game, he was able to pass that knowledge on to generations of football fans in his exuberant style. And, to my surprise, he was a personable guy and so good at his job as to set a really high bar for today's color commentators. I hope today he's up there comparing notes with Coach Shula and their great predecessors George Halas, Paul Brown, Vince Lombardi, Sid Gillman, and the other greats. They say that Heaven has a great football team, but they have a great coaching staff too.
Rest in Peace Coach Madden.

Rick

Listening / watching all of the J.Madden tributes this morning before the games start. One of his quotes truly resonated with me:

"I HAVE NEVER WORKED A DAY IN MY LIFE."

John Madden

I started off as an electrician in NYC in the early 80s . My dad had an in, in the electrical Union so I was blessed in. I worked 16 yrs and was an "A" journeyman. But I hated it. Everyday was horrible physical work. I came home to an apartment in a sea of other apartment buildings.

I made the decision when my first son was born in 99' (named Danny after the great one)to move to Florida and find a job I loved. I can't say I never worked a day in my life.....but I get what John is saying. Truly a calling ....we are starting to say good bye to an era of American life and sports that doesn't really exist anymore.

Thank you Coach Madden for helping me realize today how lucky I am.

RIP sir.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!
