He was one of the many who suffered from brain injury.
Interestingly, he competed with Mercury Morris for playing time at the RB position and they ultimately shared snaps. Rotating in Merc where his running style was needed and Kiick with his pass catching ability proved to be very successful during our championship seasons.
Instead of having bitterness towards each other, Kiick and Morris began a friendship on that roster which lasted until the end. Morris stayed in touch with him throughout.
I bet Coach Shula had alot to do with that friendship. Explaining the TEAM concept. Its what this team has been lacking....hopefully Coach Flores can get that concept across. Competition is healthy, making a Nemsis is not.
Late to post, I saw the news within minutes of it being made public. Very sorry to learn of Jim's death; it makes me think deeply about my own career, what was, and it brings home the reality of growing older.
I enjoyed the Butch Cassidy/Sundance relationship between Kiick and Czonka. The local media played that one up. The threesome, Czonka, Kiick and Mercury Morris, proved more than opponents could bear. It was a wonderful time for Dolphins' football and Jim Kiick will always be part of the phenomenal '72 undefeated Dolphins team. RIP Jim.
