Offensive Guard

Miami (Philbin?) has made grave errors in who they decided to NOT sign. They thought Evan Mathis was asking too much. Afraid of the controversy if they brought back Incognito.

Both players played well this past season, well above what Miami's OG's did.

Need to look at FA and get solid guards. What Miami presently has can't get it done and Miami (probably) won't draft a guard until somewhere in the middle rounds, which rarely means starter in their rookie season.

IMO guard and LB were the weakest position on the phins last year.

I think fixing the guard spot should be one of the main priorities this year.

I dont think they did much to fix it in 2015 but sign a couple of scrubs from the street.

The sad thing is that everyone knew several positions on the o-line needed upgrading heading into the 2014 season, and all they did was sign a few scrubs and draft James.

The issue here is two-fold.

Fail by the front office to identify the right talent for the scheme. Cockiness to think they could go with lower tier signings.

Fail by the coaching staff to recognize which talent to play.

Far too long the coaches have tried to force feed us Dallas Thomas and now its Billy Turner or Jamil Douglas.

You will never convince me that one of the FA's were not better than what they put on the field. There were 15 o-linemen when we started the season and they couldn't get two of them to play better than DT and BT?

Well, tannehill gets a pass because of poor coaching. Maybe these guys aren't as bad as everyone thinks.

Thomas I don't know but Douglas was a rookie and Turner only in his 2nd year. I'd like to see what the new staff does with them as far as their development.

Thomas was actually a lot better at guard last year. Their huge mistake was putting him at LT. He is still not good but he was less of a liability. Fewer bone-headed plays per game...

As far as Tannehill getting a pass...I think it was much more than just "coaching". It was a bad offensive scheme/philosophy, play calling, etc.

The guard position needs to be addressed through FA. We need to hire
proven players and continue to add depth once the starters are in place.

Exactly. And people want to unfairly judge Ryan Tanehill on that. AND he did decent. Sam sam did you see your boy Tom Brady without blocking yesterday?Ryan will be killer with just some decent version of a offensive line. GASE came here specifically because he wants to bring him to the next level.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

We've been talking about getting tannehill the help he needs for a couple of years now. Maybe more.

BTW TCPF Tom Brady had way more pressure yesterday than tannehill has had many times.

Tannehill many times has had the time to deliver the football but locks up on a receiver......He doesnt have the ability to change the view for another open receiver.

If the first receiver is cover then 99 percent tannehill is going to get sacked.

Agreed. Guard usually are one of the least expensive positions to add AND we need to focus on defense in the first three rounds at least.

Not saying that our oline did not suck however. It sucked big time. I was talking about those very few times when it held up to the amazement of all.

I have seen it too at times and was thinking the same thing....throw it!

I also saw improvement in his pocket presence at times this year but no one will say that because most people don't watch the all-22 coaches tape. They see the TV version and have no idea if the receivers were covered or not.

But to outright label him as "that guy" does not come close to telling the whole story, IMO.

As you said yourself, "those very few times when it held up"...

Ever hear of a player getting in a groove? How do you do that if you have absolutely ZERO confidence in your line?

I have seen him get in a groove and pick apart offenses with some AMAZING throws even when he had poor protection. That's why I am not giving up on him yet.

4 stinking years of horrendous line play? How long does the guy have to wait for the FO to get it's shite together? It's pathetic.

Not exactly. They signed 3rd tier players. I'm saying sign Osemele....the top guard in FA. I've said it it many posts.

What are you going to do? Draft a guard in round 1 and then what about DE, DT, LB, CB, FS?

I also said in another thread, they could draft a LT to play LG and as insurance for BA. I'm not totally against that (although many here would lose their minds) but the value has to be there. The kid from Notre Dame in 1? Ok...as long as Ramsey is gone, etc.

Dont need to draft them high Joe...

Keep drafting guards in the latter rounds until you hit on a couple...

How would anyone know? They coaches never played them? I can tell you they had better seasons on other teams that any of our guards had this year.

Joe, my number one priority for the Fins for the first round is either LB or CB. If a "can't miss" guy is there at 8 and he is on the top of Miami's wish list, then go with that guy.

As far as your idea of drafting an OL at 8 (above), I would do that only if Miami trades back (but not too far).

Wentz has recently been added to the top QB list for the draft, so If Miami trades back (again, not too far) then more than likely three QBs will be taken before Miami picks. That will help them get a top name at a position they need.

I just mentioned it because of the several times you said , If Tom Brady was a Dolphin he would be this or that. Nope. His Oline was committing penalties that placed him in bad spots at 3rd and long. They pounded Tom and his usually accurate little passes weren't. Ryan takes a pounding and still threw for 4000 yds. Our line was MUCH worse consistently. AND we dont have Gronkowski. Laundrys pretty damn fine though........

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

I would love to find a MLB but with the injury to Jaylon Smith, that leaves Myles Jack. He may be a great player but I'm not too keen on 225 lb Lb's (6'1)...let alone in the middle. He's also coming off a season ending injury. Anyone other LB is a stretch at 8.

CB yes but we also have just as big a need at DE and DT but I am not sure there will be any there worthy of 8. (Just say no to Clemson DE's...Shaq Lawson, NO. They all flop for some reason).

Our starting pass rushers at this point are DeMontre Moore and Terrence Fede. Ouch!

It is highly doubtful that Wake will even sniff the start of the season and he will be 34 years old in 4 days...coming off an Achilles? for a guy that depends on his "get-off"? Not good.

Not sure OV deserves a huge contract. Shelby? No. Dion Jordan? WOW.

That was only IF ALL the other top talent was gone. I'll take a top LT over reaching for a CB, DE or DT any time.

I don't think anyone gets a player like Ronnie Stanley by trading down from 8. He would have been the first linemen taken last year if he came out.

If I see a franchise QB at 8, I snag him in a heartbeat. You don't get the opportunity very often.

Wow. you sure have changed your tune. Now it's no big deal? confused smiley

Fans may have time. The people picking the players DO NOT. They know they will not be here long if they don't produce and Mike T knows this is his LAST chance to GM a team. Those guys (GM's) don't get new opportunities to lead very often.

I also just read that Miami believes there biggest team weakness is at guard, meaning they want two new guards.

Now watch them sign Osemele or a top FA left guard, draft Ronnie Stanley in 1 to play RT (backup LT) and move James inside to RG.
