I like him, sounds like a no BS taking guy. Vance has to command his respect by knowing what he is doing and not taking any of HIS BS. A guy like this could be good for the Phins.

I hope he gets in Ross's face and straightens him out.

Our front four should be happy with such an allignement...if we can keep the group together that is.

Vernon, Suh, Phillips and Shelby should be able to consistently get consistent pressure on QB's if they are put in positions to just tee off regularly.

Our LBers will be the key because we only have Jenkins (2 yrs) at the moment...

Beyond that we have guys who need to develop in McCain (1 yr), Hewitt (2 yrs), Hull (1 yr), Vigil (1 yr) and Paysinger (4 yrs) who may be as good as he's ever going to be right now.

Misi and Sheppard should both be shown the door...

biggest reason for/to like the hire is he worked with Suh before, got the most out of him, and Suh respects him

I believe he was only the assistant line coach when he worked with Suh. Dolphins were denied permission to talk to the line coach.

I miss having Paul Soliai on our DL. He was good against the run.

"IMO, we need a run stopper like Nick Fairley, Damon Harrison, Ian Williams who can take on double teams. Otherwise we are just wasting Suh."

I'm not sure I understand this. This is a description of exactly the job Suh is supposed to do, he is NOT a pass rusher and he wasn't brought here for that purpose. He was brought here to command a double team and free up lanes for the smaller, quicker pass rush specialists. If he does get sacks, that is just gravy.

what is the deal here? he has not been officially announced as a hire which is weird. did this deal fall through? if so that would be disturbing since he was probably one of the strongest hires we made and DL is one of our biggest problems

You think Suh was brought here at 20 mil a season to occupy blockers? Of course, he demands double teams but he also has beat those most of the time in the past. He was brought here to make plays and be disruptive. He was brought here because he was as good vs the run as he was in pass game. He is not a pass rusher? Are you kidding? WOW. 10 sacks as a rookie DEFENSIVE TACKLE is not a pass rusher? 4,8, 5.5, 8.5 and 6 this year. That's pretty damn good for a DT.

This entire BS Kevin Coyle defense was based on the premise that BOTH DT's be disruptive, up-field forces. It failed because we had NO other DT that could win one on one match-ups or stop runners. It failed because the guys who were supposed to be freed up (LB's) could not get off blocks.

This year he was doubled and tripled and the other DT STILL could not get off single blocks to make a play.

You don't pay a FA DT, 114 mil to occupy blockers. That's the job of a 3-4 NT that makes 6 mil a year who are two-down players.

He has 31 more pressures than any other defensive tackle since he entered the league and he’s collected the second most run stops over that same period of time.

Prior to 2015, he’s been in the Top 10 for Pass Rushing Productivity in all five seasons, finishing in the Top 5 the last three (prior to 2015).

He is a prototypical 3 technique DT but he is so versatile he has often been lined up at just about every position on the D-line from 4-3 NT to DE. 0-tech, 1-tech, 2-tech, 3-tech, etc. etc.

Of his 924 snaps in 2014, 381 came from guard to guard (2-tech, 1-tech, 0-tech), 482 were in the B gap (3-tech, 4i-tech), and 61 came outside of that (4-tech and greater).

This year he was misused in the base defense because they played Cam Wake to stop the run and he is a liability vs the run. OV is OK vs the run and Earl Mitchell is terrible. Who else was getting double teamed in the running game? No one. It was a complete waste that exposed poor coaching from the top down.

sorry to get back on topic but were are NOT hiring Washburn, instead we are brining back our other DL coach who did a terrible job last year. Not pleased at all with this.

Earl Mitchell is not starter quality. Never has been. 22 tackles playing next to Suh?

Phillips cannot play the run and is young.

OV did show up in second half of CONTRACT year.

Wake showed up in game 4 and then to IR. Still not good vs run. should have been a situational pass rusher ONLY.

Shelby = inconsistent

Fede = invisible

None of those guys are good at shedding blocks.

They did get better (albeit inconsistent) after Coyle was fired (AND Mitchell was injured).

All I can hope is that they know more than we do....I will wait for proof but I know most of our linemen were way over rated going into the season.

I assume they talked to players and other coaches about him.

While this quite true, he was primarily brought here- this was commented on heavily in the popular press- to occupy blockers and take the pressure off the other lineman and linebackers, and the rest was gravy, as I asserted. At that price they expected a hell of a lot of gravy. Once he settled in, he provided that gravy in a large measure- unfortunately, nobody else stepped up their game and benefitted from his abilities.

"Fede = invisible"

I didn't even know that this guy was still on the team. I expected big things from him after the flashes he showed in his rookie season.

Keeping OV will go a long way to making this a good hire.

In my dreams, we keep OV at a fair price and Jordan returns with a new focus and dedication -- adding a new element to the mix.

If Wake can properly rehab, hopefully we keep him for situational play only.

I'd also like to keep Shelby on the roster. The kid has done everything right and is solid player.

I just think we need to take care of our own young rising productive players BEFORE we start targeting $$$ for FA.

But then again, I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn last night.
