The Buffalo game showed where deferring is the correct call and why teams do it.

If Miami had gone for the FG at the end of the half (and made it) they would have had 10 points after they scored the TD on the first possession of the second half.

Different ball game after that.

And, with better clock management, it would have been 14 points because we'd have had at least two plays to go for the TD instead of just settling for the field goal.

Either way, would have completely changed the game around. That's what deferring gives you - the chance to score points in bunches.
