Is this the the death of the read option in the NFL?

Jay Gruden has named Kirk Cousins the starting QB for the entire season. So there's that.

WOW, Washington gave up an awful lot to draft this guy, how could so many experts have gotten it so wrong? Is this the nail in the coffin of the read option as a functional NFL offense or just RG3's career? It's not like Kap is still lighting up the league either, so glad Miami didn't enter the RG3 sweepstakes and also that they let RT17 develop in the pocket. Looks to me like the read option is falling by the wayside ala the Wildcat.

I don't know about falling by the wayside but NFL Ds usually catch up to these fads.

I think it will still be run effectively by QBs that can actually read a D and pass from the pocket.

Tanny and Wilson right now are the only QBs in this style that are effective.

The read option is hard to sell if you don't have a QB who is a legitimate passing threat.

Tanny IS............when his range is 15 to 20 yards, Chris. Not a Lamonica by any means
but most read option QBs don't specialize in it.

The ones who continue to be effective running it must be. Otherwise the defense keys in and that option is closed.

One of the reasons the Dolphins couldn't extend the Wildcat over multiple seasons is that Ronnie Brown couldn't pass the ball accurately. This is a reason why they drafted Pat White (according to Jeff Ireland).

Option qb in the nlf is the same as a jap kamikaze pilot in WW2, meaning you will not be around here long kid. Its suicidal. Dolphins doing right w/ the development of tanne into a pocket passer. Wilson too is more pocket passer than option.

It's the end for Qb's who have not evolved as passers. Washington "dumbed" down their offense for RG3 in 2012. He wasn't able to be effective in a full blown offense. Same goes for Kaepernick.

All these guys who people touted as better than Tannehill and he has proven everyone wrong so far. We should have taken this guy or that guy....

Kaepernick
RG3
Andy Dalton
Nick Foles
Ryan Mallett
Kirk Cousins
Aaron Murray
AJ McCarron

When the Skins cut RGIII he'll turn into a Tebow like sideshow act.

Griffin was no different. If there was a qb capable of playing the option in the nfl it would have been done now. Im not a Griffin fan but still thinks there is talent there. Redskins will cut him and someone will give him another chance. Jeff Fisher has always said good things about him while he was getting thrown under the bus by folks in DC so maybe he ends up in St Louie.

Im waiting to see what happens at his next stop. Living in the area you see immaturity on both sides of the issue. Coaches, team, RG III etc. Jealousy was present when RG III stepped into that locker room. All you would hear is comments about his commercials publicity etc. They would say he had not earned anything. He shot his commercials before camp and came into camp ready to perform. Took them to the playoffs.

The coaches were supposed to be the adults in the situation and they were pretty petty Gruden and Shanahan. Griffin never had issues w/ the coaching staff at Baylor always had a positive attitude and work ethic. Good military parents, married and stable. Things just fell apart when he stepped into that organization. If the situation repeats itself at his next stop then I will join the naysayers.

RG3 is finished. His past injuries will keep him from having a successful NFL career, I think his rookie year was a one and done thing.

There were great expectations for RG3 from the get go. Now that he isn't anywhere near the QB he was during his rookie season, disaster is/was imminent. The read option isn't dead, but it is for RG3. He's physically incapable of being effective with it. Having to change your style into pocket passing when you're half the man you once were surely can't be easy, especially when you were the epitome of the read option and that was your bread and butter.

The Redskins are a hot mess. And I'm really happy that we drafted Tannehill.

1 Andrew Luck
2 Robert Griffin III
3 Trent Richardson
4 Matt Kalil
5 Justin Blackmon
6 Morris Claiborne
7 Mark Barron
8 Ryan Tannehill

6 teams that needed a QB (in 2012) drafted ahead of us and only one got a good QB...or player for that matter. Thank god we didn't have a higher pick that year or Ireland would have screwed us for years to come. We could easily be where Washington is right now.

3 out of the next 4 picks were pro bowlers.

A draft that netted Tannehill, Vernon, Lamar miller and Rishard Mathews. Had Ireland taken Mychal Kendricks or Kelechi Osemele in round 2 OR traded up two spots to take Cordy Glenn, he (and Richie Incognito) may still have a job.

In any draft if you pick 4 very good players is a great draft.

The problem with RG3 is the Redskins. He did and does have the talent to be effective but is the damage done to him by the worst franchise in the league going to end his career? I don't think so, another team will give him a chance and if that team puts him in a better situation we may see different results...assuming he can still get it done physically and the jury is out on that.

He's immature and has been allowed to be so by the Skins and thier dysfunction. Sad that his team failed him and that he failed them.

rgiii is an adult and failed himself. he acted like an entitled punk after he won ROY. At some point people need to look in the mirror.

The best thing for the skins to do is rid their lockerroom of the cancer.

When your not capable of reading a defense in the pros your days are numbered.

dog killer Vick gets another chance.

sexual predator Rothersburger gets a hand slap

Dallas stuck w/ Romo until he figured out he would rather be a qb than a golfer.

Tim cannot throw 3 basic passes properly in a row Tebow gets another chance.

and the biggest brandname Johnny football gets another chance.

RG III will get another chance. The guy that won a tough nfc east as a rookie will get another chance to see if he has learned his lesson.

Best desription I heard of him is he is a country bumpkin a rube that thinks what worked for him at Baylor will work in the nfl. He has to learn that the press is not your friend. If the basic black and white interview answers that Brady and Manning give the press are good enough for them they are good enough for him.

His dad is not Archie Manning. He needs to tell his parents to get out of his career he can handle it.

He needs to drop the social media crap. The last episode was stupid. He also needs to learn no team wants there starting qb exposed to the dumb social media crap. He should have took it down so that it was not available for anyonyone to update his profile.

If he learned his lesson he has the talent to make it.

The problem with RG111 is that his game is scrambling like he did in college...

Cant do that in the pros.

Faster stronger players folks..

Sooner or later you are going to get hurt...

There have been players who have done it.....but they have been lucky...

You have to have a lot of luck to be a scrambling qb in the pros and get away with it.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This is far more accurate in describing the problem.
