I think Damian Williams the running back will make the 53 over James... I think the CB's are anyones guess...

All things are subject to interpretation whichever interpretation prevails at a given time is a function of power and not truth.

I think 4 RB's could make the 53 man roster including Williams. I left him out to keep an extra lineman.
The other reason: I liked Williams in the passing game last year but wasn't impressed with him as a runner. We now have Ajayi who is a lock to make the team and he is a very good receiver as well as runner. (of course we don't know how he does in the NFL yet but that was the premise I used.) Also James was called out by Philbin as being much improved. Coming from Chip Kelly's offense at Oregon, he also fits. If he can land a return spot, he also improves his chances.
I think they wanted a power back to compliment Miller last year. Williams never separated himself and I think he only had 3.4 ypc. Didn't really show up as a power runner for such a big RB. Moreno had 4.8, Miller 5.1. Even Daniel Thomas had 3.8.
If Ajayi shows up with power and can catch, James shows up as a runner/receiver/returner....Williams becomes expendable unless he steps way up.
Also...do they keep him over a lower roster guy...5th round pick (Thompson)? extra DT, DB or OL?
I think they keep 3 backs...Miller, Ajayi, and Williams.
Gilleslee hasn't shown crap since he's been here and James has been in the league 3 years and hasn't done much. As an undrafted FA Williams has shown more than those two combined.
You never know. Sometimes a players just has to get in the right system...and sometimes they struggle mentally with things like pass pro, maturity, thinking they are so talented they don't have to work in the off season, etc. I just like the fact that he was mentioned over everyone else as most improved.
I haven't seen him as much as Williams and just wasn't impressed with Williams.
James averaged 4.8 ypc in SF on 39 carries. Williams averaged 3.4 on 28 carries when everyone else was doing better behind the same line.
James took 2 years to accumulate the carries that Williams got in 1. That tells me a few things...he was behind a pretty good runner (Gore) and he struggled mentally. The talent is there IMO. Led the nation is rushing in 2010, 3rd in Heisman, all time PAC 10 leader, 2nd round talent.

Comment: DT Earl Mitchell was seen taking snaps as a FB during recent practice sessions. Mitchell has two years’ experience in the role in college, and could be ideal in short yardage and goal line situations.

I'm not going to post roster projections so I'll comment on Chris'.
I like the 6 wrs. I don't think LaMike makes it and I like Chris McCain ahead of Tripp. If Tripp gets knicked at all in this last preseason game I wouldn't be surprised if the IR'ed him again.
With those 2 extra roster spots I think Mike Hull and an extra Olineman will be added.
I hope LaMike James makes it just so Landry doesn't have to return punts. I liked what I have seen from James on ST thus far.
Chris McCain has all but disappeared. He hasn't even showed up as a pass rusher/DE. Flash in the pan. His play likely influenced the move of Misi back to SLB.
I hope to see at least two of the UDFA LB's make the team. Hull and Vigil have performed well.
I have not seen much from Paysinger (or Sheppard).
I think Linkenbach makes the team. McClenden has done well but he seems to have been demoted in favor of Brenner and the young guards....not sure what happens there. 22 more cuts coming before Saturday.
Just updated my first first post but had a few thoughts. There are a few players that have been outplayed and HAVE NOT done enough to either, earn a starting spot or even make the team. Mostly at LB. This is our weakest area now that things have shaken out a bit.
Chris McCain: IMO, has done nothing to show he has worked to improve. He doesn't look like he's worked out at all and maybe just thought he could get by on natural ability. Same as last year. Other players have outperformed him as OLB and DE.
Kelvin Sheppard: I have seen nothing from him that shows he deserves to be a starter at MLB. If I were in the FO, I would be scouring the waiver wire on Tuesday for a starting caliber veteran MLB. He carries a 2 mil cap hit this year and a 1.5 mil savings. Not worth it as a backup and I would rather have one of the young guys take over that #2 MLB spot if we can find a vet. Vigil or Tripp. If you can't make plays at MLB behind this line, you can't make plays. He also does not play ST's.
Spencer Paysinger: Is he really worth a valuable roster spot just for special teams? I have seen nothing from him.
Koa Misi: has done nothing is PS but we know what we have in him. Not worthy of his contract but we are too thin and inexperienced to let him and Sheppard go. Sheppard is not better than Misi no matter how you slice it.
Jordan Tripp: had better play lights out and outperform every LB on the field tomorrow. Has show he is injury prone but probably has the talent to start one day. He may be on his way out without a recognizable performance.
Andrew Franks will get all kicking duties vs Tampa. It's his job to win so to speak.
I would be looking to replace Sheppard and Paysinger come Tuesday and I would look long and hard at Chris McCain to see if he needs to go. Not sure he has the work ethic needed. I would also look for an upgrade at CB because chances are Taylor won't finish the year.
Maybe even make a trade for a LB if we have to do it.
I think we would be better of with...
SLB Tripp or Vigil
MLB Misi
