She may deserve the job but this screams PR move by the league to win back female viewership after it botched the the Ray Rice situation.

Next they'll introduce the first openly gay official in Indianapolis.

Definitely a PR move. I don't mean to sound sexist butt, to learn the game inside and out you really need alot of exposure to it as a player, coach and/or official. I question how much she would have gotten at the high school, college or, pro level except maybe in the lingerie league. With some of the boneheaded calls made by the officials in recent years I wonder if she is really one of the better football minds available.

IF she is good at it, I don't have a problem.. If it was done as a PR stunt, it is a dangerous one.. Being an NFL official is tough, if she isn't cut out for that level of officiating, it could get ugly quick..

She's been an official for college football for a minute already. She's officiated a bowl game as well. She was a line ref for the now defunct United football league. She has experience, and probably is more than qualified to be in the position she was hired for. My question is how will the public react when she botches that game winning/losing call.

How will the public act? The same way as they do when the regular officials blow a call.

This entire male/female thing is a complete non issue. Can she make the calls and get them right is the question, I think she'll do just fine.

She'll probably be expecting the negative treatment and will probably not tolerate any BS on the field. Which may be a good thing.

If you don't think that there are some real misogynistic dudes out there that are sitting waiting for her to blow an important call so that they can plaster boards, tv, radio, etc about how this is a big mistake, you're kidding yourself. There are a lot of misogynistic, good ol boy guys out there that completely DISPISE this move. I've read the posts and heard the talk shows already.

Don't get me wrong, I have zero issue with this. I think she's got eyes, and a brain. That's about all that a ref requires to do the job. But I think that the NFL may be underestimating the amount of vitirol coming her way.

I think the biggest concern is going to be from how the head coaches and players speak to and around her.. They are pretty rough acting and talking towards/around officials...
To me it is like when you hang out with your guy friends at the bar, it is much different then how you speak when someone brings their wife to guys night... Are all the players and coaches now suppose to clean up their acts and the way the on the field football culture has interacted for decades... Because it is surely not a culture I would choose to have my sister in the middle of on the field during game day... It is just a pretty crude environment..

I have a strong feeling that she has thick skin. It won't bother her, and if it does, she is in the wrong job field.

All I care about is whether or not she can officiate properly. That's how she should be judged. That's how Violet Palmer of the NBA is judged. No one even mentions that she's out there any more. She handles the coaches and players just fine and won't take crap from anyone.
