This is the salient point here. In the NFL, cheating is punishable by fines (easily paid by rich owners and coaches) and lost draft picks which any team would gladly forfeit if it meant a trip to the Super Bowl. But wins aren't forfeited in the NFL, even if the integrity of the match is in question. So what's to deter teams from cheating?

Golf has the answer. If you compromise the integrity of the match, unintentionally or even to your own detriment, you are disqualified.

RE: Truth no you don't have to do a thorough and fair investigation...if the Pats balls were deflated (and the NFL knew the very same day it happened if they were or not) and thereby in violation of league rules then they did it...period. It does not matter if they knew it was being done or not. It's simply their responsibility to ensure that the rules are being complied with.

According to reports apparently the Colts were playing with undoctored balls. The Pats were playing with the doctored ones...thereby giving them an advantage. Reports also say that 11 out of 12 balls the Pats were using were outside of the rules.

In reality the NFL had plenty of time...penatlties should have been levied on Monday.

True, but in golf you aren't playing a single elimination, head to head competition over a months of Sundays.

This is an integrity issue and the pats have none.

Deflating the balls probably didn't impact the outcome of this game. But what about the week before vs the Ravens?

Jsm08 has it right. Bellichik needs to be suspended for next season. I'd also have them forfeit their regular allotment of draft picks for 2015 along with any compensatory picks the might have been awarded.

Belichick's own family never lets him be the bank when they play Monopoly. They know.

Maybe the NFL should take a closer look under the microscope at the Patriots. I agree that if the Patriots did deflate the ball then you know they had a reason to do it and that in itself is cheating.

You have to wonder what else they have cheated on and no one knows about. Theres a lot of money bet on these games and you can't tell me that it was not an advantage to the Patriots. You really have to look at the big picture, such as how was it to their advantage to cheat.

Something wrong in Patriot Land.

You get breaks because you cheated and then demoralize the other team and that alone can make a big difference. Not to mention helping the passing game and kicking game, get my drift. The momentum changes and so does the other teams will to win. That my friends is called a winning edge.

Tea anyone ?

Good day

I have to say, when this story first broke I thought it was sour grapes by the Indy-area reporter. And it still is to a large degree, but for 11 of 12 balls to be deflated by a couple PSI each, that's no accident.

Yesterday on a CBS website I saw a blurb that cited a quote from Tom Brady from 2011 saying how he likes deflated footballs. Then the 11 out of 12 thing surfaces.

One local jock-sniffer on the radio thinks that Kraft will be done with Bellichick after the super bowl. I'll believe that when I see it--Bellichick has made Kraft boatloads of dough.

i don't know as phin's fan i want to jump on this bandwagon of belicheat and all that. My take as a fan is most teams/coaches try to take every advanatage thety can and if you took a microscope to each team I feel lot of this kind of thing would surface, maybe not i dont know. I don't wnat the pats to go down to something liek this with belicheck gettign suspended or something of the like(don't really see that btw) I would rather we develop and take them down head to head. I live in new england and struggle with hating them at times as i feel they have soem class with the team and then things liek this pop up. Do they pull more of this shit than most teamsand this is just the tip of the iceberg or are they more scrutinized because of their sucess? I don't personally like excuses/cop outs I just dont really know how much of this kind of thing goes on in the nfl. Like hockey better anyways harder to pull this stuff off smiling smiley

I think that when all this comes out we are going to find out that they have been pulling this bait and switch on game balls for YEARS.

Lots of talk out there about Belicheat being suspended from the Super Bowl so the league doesn't have to deal with the embarrassment during Super Bowl week.

I don't see how you do that and still let Brady play.

There's no way an equipment guy and/or Belicheat did this without Brady signing off on it.

Goodell has a chance here to wash some of the mud off his reputation by hammering a coach and a franchise who have thumbed their collective noses at the rules everyone else seems to play by.

If I were him I'd suspend Belicheat immediately, and through the end of the 2015 league year and fine him whatever his salary would be for that 14 month period.

I'd suspend Brady for the Super Bowl and fine him $5million.

I'd strip the Patriots of all 7 of their allotted picks, and any compensatory picks they are eligible for, in the 2015 NFL draft and I'd fine Kraft $10 million.

I'd also announce that a third infraction by Belichick, or the Patriots franchise will result in lifetime bans from the sport for anyone involved.

“How much did this help us on a scale of 1 to 100?” Kraft reportedly asked Belichick, via Gary Myers’ book Coaching Confidential.

“One,” Belichick replied.

“Then you’re a real schmuck,” Kraft replied.

And shouldn't Brady be punished for the deflation? It wouldn't have been done if he wasn't pushing for it.

The latest I read was that the Ravens had tipped Indy off to watch out for underinflated balls.
From the previous week two of Brady's passes were intercepted and the balls were kept by Baltimore and were determined to be low on pressure. If true, it would suggest that it was a regular practice for the pats.

And notice that 11 out of 12 balls were deflated. Why not the 12th ball?

Punting and field goal kicking where you want a maximum inflated ball.

Ummm.... No.

The 12th ball was slightly deflated but not as obviously as the others.

But that's beside the point.

The 12 balls each team provides are for their offenses only. The league provides the "K-ball" that is used for kickoffs, punts, Fg and extra point tries.

Okay. So it didn't affect the kicking game because those balls, as it turns out, are provided by the league.

Geez you two, the kicking balls are completely different then the 12 that each team brings, those are handled by the officials not the teams. I think that started when some teams were freezing the kicking balls so they were harder and traveled farther. The one (odd)ball out of the twelve was deflated, just not as much as the other 11.

Every ball should be provided by the league and they wouldn't have those problems.

That's what's going to happen going forward Sam. They might still let teams break them in, but they are going to take control of them at some point under lock and key.
