We have to stop drafting for need and take best player

this is why one side of the ball is good one year and then the other side goes bad.

now we have to rebuild the defense and who knows what toll that will take on the offense next year.

Need has to factor in, but it's also why we have no depth!

look at the Cowboys for example...they were last in defense last year but drafted guard Martin from Ndame 1st .

Their defense is better because they changed coaches and scheme and added a few pieces...but the point is that they didn't draft on need, but best player available...now they top rushing team and going to playoffs with best OL in the league

Forget the defense.

Finish the offense. You win in this league by out scoring the other team, not by shutting them out.

Sign a big time guard, draft an OT, RB, WR and another OLineman for Depth if the opportunity is there. Use the rest of the draft and FA to add to the defense.

Put an elite line in front of Tannehill with a top RB and receiving corps and our defense will get better by spending less time on the field and by making teams one dimensional by forcing them to play catch up.

You can focus on overhauling the defense in the next draft.

I am a little confused, Hickey drafted for need with our first pick Juwan James, and that worked out pretty well so far.. And then he drafted best player available with the 2nd pick, as WR certainly wasn't a need, and Landry worked out pretty well so far....

So, I am not exactly sure... If we had not drafted a quality tackle in the first rd out of necessity, could you imagine how bad it would have gotten after Albert got hurt?

I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all answer to this ole Question.

I think the answer is "it depends."

You may need a quarterback but if a "Junior Seau" is there and your linebackers are good but not great, and there is a Todd Blackledge there at QB, you grab Seau.

By the same token, if you need a linebacker and you have David Woodley, who took you to the SuperBowl in Pasadena but a Dan Marino is available, you grab Marino.

Most years, unfortunately, are not that clear and it's a mixture of both.

And keep in mind that Tom Brady went in the 6th round.

Agreed, it has to be a little of both every year.

That presumes that James wasn't the best player on Hickey's board when he was selected.

Sure the pundits called it a "reach" but remember that Hickey thought so highly of James that he he passed on trading down for fear that he wouldn't fall another 10-15 spots.

Either way, his evaluation was correct. James was well worth the pick where he was selected.

I go with best player available in the next draft for sure.

the exclusion would be at RB.

Not like we have a glaring hole like at tackle last year. An upgrade at several spots would be nice

We need better decision making.

Perfect example is last year. We need a tackle so we reach to get one and let KB the beast slip by for a marginal OT.

Same thing in '10. We have a chance at Dez and Demaryius, and we go for Odrick because in some coache's mind he plans to pressure a QB from the interior and Odrick is that guy. Or he wants to drop the DE into coverage so he gets Misi instead of Gronk.

No team can afford a moron at the decision making position. Morons can live on forums but not at offices in Davie. We've had a carousel of morons for the past 25 years, and it continues with Hickey.

IF Hickey fails to get out of the first round this year with Gurley or Beckham, team should fire him on the spot. I don't give af what reasons there are for drafting anyone else, they are moronic.

I don't view the James pick as a reach or bad decision. Hickey's main job was to fix the worst line in the NFL. He signed two FA's. One top tier and one mid level. You can't fix the entire line in FA. We had to draft one and it was too important to gamble on a 2nd round pick or lower to start and perform.

It's easy to choose the best player in hindsight but the fact is we already had more invested in WR's that any team in the league. They were the NFL's highest paid group of WR's. That's on Ireland. His contracts have set this team back for years to come. Wallace, Ellerbe, Wheeler, Hartline, etc.

This year he has a little more wiggle room to take BPA. He did not have that luxury last year AND we didn't have a huge hole (or need, at the time) at WR.

So you draft a WR in round 1 and then what? You have a WR (coming off 2 1k yard seasons) making 6 mil a year sitting on the bench or not getting snaps. The odds of that rookie WR performing right away are pretty low. Again, hindsight is easier.

Now we have to find a starting tackle in round 2. The next one take after 50 (which was our next pick) was Justin Britt. He had a 3rd or 4th round grade by most teams but Seattle had him higher. He did not have a great year. The next two tackles taken were Morgan Moses and Billy Turner. They had one start between them.

So Justin Britt and Kelvin Benjamin OR

Ja'Wuan James, Jarvis Landry, a 4th round pick and a 5th round pick. I'll take that any day when considering the state of our roster at the time.
