My only concern with Potter was his kickoffs were a little short. I think he only put one deep in the end zone.

If Potter doesn't have a total meltdown, Sturgis is on his way out.

He started off so well. Potter looked good though. 2 long kicks.

Well, as long as Sturgis is not 100% healthy, we would be foolish to cut this kid. Not saying anyone is intending to but it's just a roster space we have to reserve.

The only way Sturgis isn't our kicker this year is if he's hurt.

4 of his 8 misses last year we're over 50 yards. And a 2 or 3 of those were almost impossible due to weather or length.

He was 26 of 30 under 50. That's 87% as a ROOKIE.

So if it weren't for all the misses, he would have been considered good? smiling smiley

A guy off the street just made a 48 and 51 yard FG. Part of the job is kicking in bad weather.

Even if you take into account the hypothetical 87%, that would still rank him around 20-21 in 2013.

He's 43% for FG's over 50 yards. Ranked 27th in the league. I'm sure he was not the only guy kicking in bad weather. Some of these kickers actually play at home in bad weather. The Jets kicker was 3/3 over 50 yards.

The fact that he is nursing the same injury as last year does not bode well for his 2014 season. Injury prone? for a kicker? with no contact?

So if a qb throws 20 int's in a season but 10 of them hit his target in the hands and they just batted it in the air for a pick, you aren't going to factor that into your evaluation of the qb?

The guy had solid numbers for a rookie overall. But he also had 3 misses that were prayers or shots in the dark because he has a big leg.

He had a great start and an excellent finish to last year. He had stretch in between where he missed a few he should have made and a few others he had little chance of making.

I think his injuries are far more likely to cost him his job than the 3rd kicker in camp who was on the street a week ago.

I guess I wouldn't consider a 51 yard attempt a shot in the dark or a prayer. The 57 yarder....maybe. (NFL record is 64 yards?) Two of those games were decided by 3 points or less. That's the difference between playoffs and no playoffs. I would rather give a guy a shot who shows he can make those long field goals.

(CS also missed two under 39 yards and two between 39-50)

The loss vs Baltimore (23-26) was the 57 yarder.
The loss to Buffalo (21-23) was a 51 yarder.

Hopefully, we aren't as reliant on kickers for wins this year.

All 51 yard kicks aren't created equal Joe. Unless you play in a dome.

We don't.

Plus he's a kicker who never kicked in cold weather in college, and he was a rookie.

I suppose that if you think he reached his ceiling last year then it makes sense to go with any scrub off the street.

I think he has the ability to be one of the better kickers in the league, so I'm more than willing to give him another year to prove me wrong before I start sifting through the trash heap hoping to find a better option.

Well, Potter was drafted 89 spots behind Sturgis (which was too high for a kicker IMO) I just think there are too many kickers out there to settle or wait for a guy to be clutch or stop getting injured.

Rob Bironas was cut and he was 25-of-29 last year, including 2-of-3 from 50-plus.

Bironas was cut to save 2.3m in cap space. He didn't get beat out. That's not really the same thing is it?

Potter wasn't good enough to win the redskins job last year and you want to give him the job over a guy who has a better leg, was a better college kicker and who went through the rookie experience last year?

If he can't stay healthy, YES.

The point about Bironas is that kickers are a dime a dozen...and we have other options than Potter.

I think we agree on that part.

So-so kickers are.

Funny thing about bironas, who went to a pro bowl and was 1st team all pro in 2007 is that it took him 5 years to get into the league and even after that his first two years were almost identical to Sturgis first year.

Point is that talented kickers tend to get better with the greater confidence that experience provides.

>...and we have other >options than Potter.

Sure. Tons of options. Not all good or affordable... But there are tons of guys who can kick.

I knew a guy in college who's older brother could hit from 60 regularly.

Of course he's pushing 50 now but I'm pretty sure we could get him for the league minimum.

That's a very strong case for not drafting kickers.

I agree.

I generally wouldn't waste a pick on a kicker. Sure there are always exceptions as players or circumstances where you have extra picks or a dire need, but those are not the norm.

That said, having invested a 5th round pick, a small signing bonus and a year of development/confidence building in Sturgis. I'm not inclined to dump him for a lesser talent who hasn't gone through the rookie season yet unless he's hurt.

And if he's hurt I'm not cutting him. I'm putting him on IR.

Having a kicker with an ongoing groin issue, is a bit unnerving... He had this issue at various points last season and now he is dealing with it again..... I would agree, we should put him on IR... We can't afford to have 2 rosters spots used on kickers... IR the kid, if the injury is still a problem after that, then as much as I like the kid, he just isn't worth the headache and hassle...
