We needed an RT and we got one. James is not a household name and when it was announced, I didn't know who he was etc. The "panel" covering the draft went silent with the announcement. It took several moments for it to sink in with them....
What I did learn, afterwards, is that the man has played all the time. He is consistent and durable and non-controversial. He's a guy that I sense will be there everyday, doing his workouts, being a good employee, and quietly gaining the respect of his team mates by keeping rushers away from Tannehill. I certainly hope James makes a name for himself.
I'll definitely give him the benefit of the doubt. It was a tease seeing Zack Martin fall to 16 though. I can't believe the Cowgirls didn't jump all over Manzeil like A Hot Blonde on their wedding night. After you get over that I guess its OK. So much for Hickey picking best player available though. LOL.
I have no issues with the player selected. Every OT left at that point had major warts and there isn't a lot separating them on the field. If James is the one you like the best for whatever reason, I'm fine with that. At the end of the day, it will either prove to be a good or a bad pick by how he performs on the field.
But Hickey showed a that he's not a very bold GM. He should have traded down knowing he'd have most likely gotten his guy 8-10 picks later, and if he didn't there would be someone just as good waiting for him.
Lots of quality left even if James went. Its a very deep draft. Many Draft analysts have even said an extra 3rd rounder in this draft is like a low 1st rounder in last yrs draft. James would have been available for at least 10 more picks , possibly even into the second round. Hickey has shown he is not that slick by not being able to pull another draft pick out of the hat.

I'm not going to judge him on the evaluation part Sam. As I said earlier, he's either going to be a good player or he won't be. That's will be determined on the field.
But I was begging for a trade down before the draft and even more-so when we were on the clock. In hindsight, no team after us took an olineman so the move was to trade down. Sure, its possible that someone who didn't take an olineman would have been in love with James and scooped him up. But even if they did we'd have had anyone of 4 other OL who are instant starters AND another player int he 3rd.
I'm not mad about it. Just disappointed. We had a very very good chance of getting out guy AND another potential starter.
Should have rolled the dice.
I'd rather have had James/Moses/Koundijio AND a RB like Tre Mason, a WR like Montavius Bryant or a TE like Troy Niklas...but that's me.
RT is not an 'glamour' position that folks cheer and scream over but we needed one and got a good one. I think he can get the job done and we could not have taken a chance on him not being there in the second round.

But we aren't talking about waiting on him until the 2nd round.
We are talking about trading down into the 20's and taking him there.

But is he really a "sure thing"?? I don't think he's any more of a sure thing than Moses or Kouandijio. If you wanted a sure thing the pick was Sua-Fila. He's going to be a terrific LG.
I gotcha Truth I agree but the front office got the guy they wanted.
The initial eval I saw on James was rnd 2/3 but after the combine some saw him as a low 1st rounder. I dont' mind the pick.
It's the can't get right dolphins we love! Hate the pick, hate the non trade down and picked up this guy with 19th overall. It's not like we could not get any player better and still pick up a rt? It is not like the kid is going to be a HOF RT.
It doesn't matter what could have been done. The pick is in. We can discuss what could have happened all day and more. James is our guy and being optimistic I want him to become a pro bowler. Let's be encouraging. Give this young man applause for being who he is, our new Dolphins' RT.
And when we turn in another 8/8 season how will the feelings be then? Why is it we can not draft a stud legit number 1 wr or TE? Is it too much to ask to have weapons taken I the first round and pick up solid o-lineman in the other seven rounds?
Way, way too negative. The man has made one pick trying to clean up another GM's mess. If anyone should be criticized, it's the moron GM who left this team with one NFL starting caliber offensive lineman on the roster.
To be fair, nobody knows for sure whether Ireland was unable to get the talent or, the coaches were unable to develop that talent. The offensive line coach and offensive co-ordinator were fired for a reason and Fail-bin has impressed absolutely nobody. If Martin plays solid football for SanFran then the onus is on the coaches for a lack of team control and focus. Time will tell.
