I believe the only ones we would even consider resigning are Grimes, Starks, Solia, Carroll & Clemons.
Brent Grimes, 31 in July
Starks, 31 in Dec
Soliai, 31 in Dec
Clemons 29 in Sep
Carroll, turned 27 in Jan.
Last years CB contracts....
Sean Smith turned 26 last July, signed 3 yr/16.5mil deal.
Aquib Talib and Dom Rod Crom signed a 1 year, 5 mil deal
Grimes signed 1 year 5.5 deal.
Chris Houston turned 29 last Oct, signed 5 yr/25 mil
Derek Cox turned 27 last Sept, signed 4 yr/ 20 mil
Keenan Lewis turned 27 last May, signed 5 yr/26 mil
Leodis Mckelvin turned 28 last Sep, signed 4 yr/17 mil
Dunta Robinson turned 31 last April, signed 3 yr/15 mil
Antoine Winfield turned 36 last June, signed 1 yr/3mil
as you can see the highest contract was 5.5 mil per year and that was to a 26 year old player (Smith).
The market is flooded with CB's this year....
Brent Grimes 31
Vontae Davis 26
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie 28
Chris Harris Jr. 25
Captain Munnerlyn 26
Alterraun Verner 25
Drayton Florence 33
Will Blackmon 29
Trumaine McBride 28
Rashean Mathis 34
Brandon Ghee 27
Walter Thurmond 27
Quentin Jammer 35
Tarell Brown 29
Market for 31 year old CB = 6 mil tops IMO. We could live with that under our cap on a two year deal.
DT contacts last year....

So maybe Starks gets something close to Desmon Bryant??? Starks is older but more accomplished.
Its good to hear Grimes say that he wants to end his career in MIA sounds like he is willing to work w/ the team on a contract. Starks's camp has been silent understandable he has a lot at risk. Carrol is good in the slot I would resign him.
Soliai and Clemons can be replaced in the draft.
# big run stoppers that can replace Soliai
Jones Penn State - 2nd rnd
McCullers TN - 3rd - monster will sink or swim
Coleman UCLA - 5/6 - another pocket collapser
I was liking Reynolds (Stanford) but now I like this guy from Vandy who will probably be available in rnd 4.

Yes that was good to hear. I am not as worried about the big contract as I was before. I just don't think he will get huge offers at his age. Not with the other CB's that are available.

Carroll performed way above expectations last year only he was a perimeter player. Not slot. Jimmy Wilson was our main slot guy. 16 out of 451 snaps were in the slot for Carroll. Wilson had 348 in the slot.

at what cost though? Clemons was our best safety since Jones decided to take the year off. If they plan on replacing either of these guys in the draft it will probably have to be in the top 2 or 3 rounds unless we get very lucky. Yes they were both low round picks but they also played like it for the first several years.

George Wilson (Signed two-year, $4M deal with TEN)
LaRon Landry (Signed four-year, $24M deal with IND)
We would be crazy not to resign Clemons if we can get him for under 3 mil a year. He's solid but he gets the job done. He just doesn't gamble for big plays so he is viewed as sub-par. I'll take solid over busted coverage and screw ups all day long.

8-10 mil range.
No way am I paying that! I am drafting a LT if I have to move up to get one.
Anthony Collins is another good one but he will get 6-7 mil I would guess.

Kevin Boothe (Signed one-year, $905K deal with NYG)
Geoff Schwartz (Signed one-year, $700k deal with KC)
Matt Slauson (Signed one-year, $815K deal with CHI)
We obviously missed the boat with Slauson and Schwartz.
We should be in the 4-5 mil range for at least one guard. I would offer Schwartz 3 mil but go to 4.

I would be prepared to spend a 2nd and 3 or 4th rnd picks to replace Starks and Solia. Solia is the easiest to replace imo. There are several 2 down run stuffing DT's available in this draft. My problem w/ Clemons is lack of ints. Just like Soliai im looking somewhere else to get the job done.

All the more reason to sign him. If we already have bad play at SS then we can't afford to lose a solid player. I understand most fans will judge him solely for the number of int's he doesn't get but he is well worth the money. He is not the bad player some would make him out to be.
Or....just sign Jairus Byrd if you want to spend 8 mil on a FS. Reshad Jones is scheduled to count 3.6 mil vs the cap this year and 7.8 mil next year!
Jimmy Wilson does not have the range or make up speed that Clemons does. He is quicker than fast and decent in small spaces but most likely below average as a FS. That's probably why he plays the slot and was moved from safety and also why he couldn't beat out Clemons for the job to begin with.
Expecting him to become a ball hawking safety is asking a lot.
I know everyone wants a ball hawk. So do I. It's just more rare than people acknowledge. There's only a handful of those guys in the entire league.
Only 7 safeties (Strong and free) had more than 3 picks last year.
Antrell Rolle 6
Tashaun Gipson 5
Earl Thomas 5
Jairus Byrd 4
Quinton Demps 4
Michael Mitchell 4
Eric Reid 4
I saw at least two times last year where Clemons was screaming at Reshad Jones, telling him where to line up. He was not happy. Not sure what Reshad's problem was last year. Maybe he was hanging out with the o-line too much.
and asking clemons to earn a 5-6mm/yr contract is a lot to ask too.
you can't replace everyone via high priced FAs and locking our own average FS up with a big contract doesn't help either.
i don't act like i have all the solutions but i do know that just because i've rooted for and become familiar with these players doesn't change the fact that they're part of a defense that has struggled creating turnovers or making game changing plays.
i also know that paying an average player big money doesn't make him a better player.

Who, ever said he was getting 6 mil a year? He played on a 1 year deal last year for 2.75 mil. I would not pay him 6 either but I would damn sure pay him 3. That's nothing for a starter.
The 2.75 mil he made last year would not even rank him in the top 20 for safeties.

I see what you did there. Insinuate that I am only "rooting" for him because I am a homer....not exactly. I just realize their is more to playing safety than getting int's and they don't grow on trees. The defense did struggle but I would fix the broken pieces before I worry about the above average pieces.
I would be more pissed about the guys that flat out stunk last year and got paid huge contracts....
Reshad Jones (6th highest paid safety in NFL)
Phillip Wheeler (14th highest paid OLB and most are pass rushers)
Dannelle Ellerbe (12th highest paid)
>
> i also know that paying an average player big

...and calling him average doesn't make it so. He was one of the better coverage safeties in the league over the last two years. Like I said, there are only a handful of safeties who collect int's year after year.
My only point is that if you're not willing to spend 7 mil a year for a free safety (on top of Jones contract) then you would be hard pressed to find a replacement for 2.75 mil a year that could do the same job as CC. You either spend in FA or you draft high and ignore the o-line.
None of the FA's are ball hawks except Byrd and the rest of them are strong "in the box" safeties or just old.
Yes it all depends on the market. There is reported to be a huge drop-off at safety this year in the draft and it has been said that maybe only 4 safeties will be able to play at all this year.
That may drive his price up but I would be surprised if it went as high as 6 mil as there are lots of FA safeties available.
I guess we'll see soon enough.

I remember when the Bills drafted him (same year Saban took Jason Allen) and everyone said it was a reach and then they considered him a flop (and he was sorta). Now he's been to two straight PB's.
I would hate to see Clemons follow a similar path.
Fun fact/useless info: Player who holds NFL combine record for short shuttle time....anyone know?

Pitta just resigned with Ravens 5 year 32 mil.
A FB and H-Back have to be able to run block. That's Clay's biggest weakness.
Clay is the new breed of TE. Hardly any of the top TE's can run block.
Jimmy Graham, Jordan Cameron, Gates, Gonzo. Not even Gronk.
It all depends on what sort of offense you are in. Some coaches want TE's primarily as blockers ala Bruce Arians.
I see no reason to think Clay will not get even better in his 4th year. He has a good shot to be one of the elite pass-catching TE's. He had the 9th most yards for TE's in 2013.
I also think Bill Lazor will fit the offense around the players as opposed to Sherman's way.
Our base package or most used package last year was 3 WR set, 1 TE, 1 RB.
Let's take advantage of (and build on) what we already have. Gibson will be back and was playing as well as any TE we could bring in.
The Dion Jordan trade rumors are unsettling. Miami trades up to take the 3rd pick and then are trying to trade Jordan after he was barely on the field his rookie year?
The goal for the Dolphins is to win. The franchise though doesn't have a clear vision of how to get there.
The franchise is rudderless: the front office is in shambles, the coaching staff is average at best, and the locker room is a mess.
I have been a fan since 1970, but it is difficult to stomach/accept the current state of affairs. Forget the glory days. While we may get a wild card berth every now and again, we won't see prolonged or steady success until we get the house in order.
