My point was and continues to be that I would trade Chad for Cutler if the opportunity presented itself; and yes I would throw in a 3rd round pick if it was needed to get the deal done. At that point, we would have Cutler, Henne and Beck. Then I suggested trading Cutler for 1st and 3rd round picks. I mentioned the possibility of trading Henne, but gave no indication as to what we would get in return - because as I suggested, Cutler would most likely be the one traded in my crazy scenario. With Penny most likely leaving after 2009, I would jump on this opportunity if it ever presented itself. The end result of getting a first round pick for Penny would be too good to pass up in my mind.
I think Henne is the starter in 2010 barring a major setback in his development. If Pennington has a solid 2009, he will be a marketable FA going into the 2010 season; and as such, he will try to land a starting gig. He won't want to be a backup if he has a solid 2009; and there will be a market for him if he is healthy. Of course, all bets are off if he suffers a career ending injury. And I do think he is far more likely than any of the other QB's in this conversation to suffer such an injury - which makes a trade more appealing.
That may well happen. It sure seems that Cutler's days in Denver are numbered. But I've been hearing that they want an experienced QB since there are no can't-miss QB prospects in this draft.
If the Broncos are going to trade Cutler, we know that they could get primo picks from Detroit; but the Broncos don't want a rookie QB to go with their rookie coach, so that deal is not going to happen. Beyond that, I don't know that their is one guy who is considered a guaranteed stud QB in this draft. So if they truly want to trade Cutler, they will want a proven QB and pick/s. But how many teams have a legit QB to trade them? Besides the Dolphins, who else could make them a good offer?
The Eagles if they wanted to move McNabb (32)
The Seahawks if they wanted to trade Hasselbeck (33)
The Browns if they want to move Quinn; but I doubt that Denver would consider that a good offer.
In that company, Pennington (32) doesn't seem like an old fart. Hasselebeck is probably the least attractive candidate, not because he is a few months older, but because he is coming off a putrid season.
