I do not think he will be a 1st rounder as this team has way too much talent for him not too b e good. I think McCaron does have an upside
however he cannot scramble away from pressure very well, and is a product of their system. I do think he can play in the pro's granted that team better have a running game, and good offensive line. He could start for us if given the opportunity, as he would be out Tannehill I believe. He does throw a nice long ball, and that is a major plus.
We have Moore under one more year, and I like Devlin. To draft a qb this year is just stupid. This team needs as many o line and lbers as possible for training camp. I want this team to use our first round on a amazing wr stud if one is available at 19.

Good luck with that, we didn't take one high when we desperately needed one, what makes you think we'll take one now?
If a talented QB drops to the 3d I would consider it. To me, RT is 50/50 that he is "the guy" and we need a contingency plan. Worst case scenario is the guy we draft can be traded for additional assets down the road if he cannot unseat RT.

That's not the worst case scenario...its the best case.
The chances of finding a franchise QB outside the top 50 picks of the draft are very slim. The idea that you can invest a 3rd round pick in a player who never plays and then turn him into a 1st round pick 2 years later is folly. It RARELY ever happens.
Having a good backup in this day and age is a curse, not a benefit.
You are far better off committing to developing to one guy and then suffering through a miserable season if he breaks down or flops. If he flops, then you will have a high pick to replace him. If he's good but misses a season you get a high pick and a top QB added to the roster the following season.
If you want to draft a guy to compete with RT then take a QB in the 1st or 2nd round and make it an open contest where the loser gets traded for whatever you can get.
If you want to groom a back up to fill in for a week or two if your starter tweeks a knee, then don't waste pick in the first 4 rounds on him.
we haven't gotten squat out of our 3d round picks in years. I'd prefer to take a flyer on a talented QB and let the chips fall where they may. RT is now going into his 3d year, whether he loses practice snaps to matt Moore or Devlin or a rookie in camp wouldn't seem to make much difference to me.

Just because we've wasted so many picks doesn't make it a good idea. In fact, if that's your defense for going that route then that pick will be a bust based on your own premise. Best thing to do then is trade it for a future pick.
You need to shoot for starters with your first 3 picks not back ups. Wasting a 3rd round pick on a guy who would spend the year holding a clipboard is criminal when you have 1 offensive lineman on your team worthy of playing in this league.

No...that's just a bad GM misidentifying talent.
Thomas was selected with idea he'd be a back up this year and a starter next. Like many of Ireland's picks, it looks like a miss. But that doesn't compare to selecting a guy in the 3rd that isn't the long term solution at any position.
well this same bad GM looks like he will be spending our draft picks in 2014. if we're going to be throwing darts, at least let's try to hit the lotto on a QB if a highly ranked one falls to us.
if I had any faith that we could identify a decent OL in rounds 2 and 3 (when most good ones are selected) I might feel differently given our horrid OL. But I am sick of the John Jerrys and Dallas Thomases and Sean Murphys of the world.
