Last season, Carpenter missed too many "key" kicks, and on top of that, his salary was too high for what he was delivering (or not delivering).

That's the problem with the NFL and the salary structure. A team would want to keep a player, but the salary is too high, so they have to let him go. But of course the team itself is the one who gave him that salary.

Capt- you are right it is like in any job, salary is as much a blessing as it is a curse... If you are getting paid and not delivering based on your pay, your job quickly becomes expendable... I see it all the time, with people who have a great run, get the raises they were looking for, can't keep up the numbers and are the first to be let go....

Exactly right Crowder.

The move was about getting younger and cheaper with more upside.

Kickers are streaky, they have up and down years. If you bail on them every time the have a down year you will be changing kickers every other year.

To put things in perspective, Adam Vinatieri is widely considered one of the best, if not the best, kickers of this and and generation.

Go look up his numbers.

His rookie season is identical to what Sturgis is doing right now. In fact, Vinatieri had only ONE season in his first FIVE where he made kicks at a better clip than the 78% that Sturgis has made so far.

I don't see it Berk.

First off, he's a rookie so he's going to have a learning curve, especially as a a kid coming from Florida who rarely, if ever, kicked in bad weather in the northeast in Nov & Dec.

But all that aside, just look at his stats:

He's missed 7 of 30 attempts. 3 of those misses were from 50+ and another was blocked by the Pats.

He's "missed" 3 out of 23 bankable FG's.

Where's the problem?

Where's the long streak of misses everytime he misses a kick?

He missed like 7 in a row after missing his first. And 50 yarders should be bankable in nfl

Well he has been inconsistent. The league average on 50+ this season is 66 percent, so not bankable. But, Sturgis is 50 percent. That is below average. Also, 61 fg between 30-49 yds have been missed all year. So, on average, every kicker has missed roughly two. Sturgis has missed three with one blocked. Again below average but not terrible.

However, kickers are volatile. He has a lot talent and could come back next season and miss only 1 or 2 on the season. Truth has a point about Sturgis not yet being comfortable with kicking in the cold weather since he rarely had to do so in college. I'd give him another year but his performance so far this season has been a bit disappointing.

Sturgis will be fine.
