Don't we already know from the Seth McKinney debacle that a bad Center can be disastrous.

So we bring in a fat guy to teach Samson how to eat?
1) Seth McKinney played during the Dolphin dark Ages of CRAPPY COACHING. I am not saying he would have been pro-bowl, but even our great players struggled to play to their potential.
2) Berger is 6'5" 310, so he is not really 'fat' by NFL OL standards. He is a competent back-up at worst and a potential starter at best. likely a very good contract
3) Samson Satelle was NOT a 'bad' center; he just wasn't a 'very good' one. He as tenacious and made some very good plays; however, against 3-4 Nose Tackles he got pushed back. Cam Cameron would have used him in a Zone Blocking scheme with a double team. Bill wants a Center who can tacke on a NT 1 on 1. 300lbs isn't gonna do it.
-They aren't signing a Free Agent who will start from day 1,
-if the draft a guy he isn't likely to be ready to start on day 1.
-signing Berger gives us a back-up, a possible starter, and someone who will push Satelle & Thomas, and buys us time if we do draft a young Center so he can develop.
there was a lot of discussion about how our OL had no depth, that once Smiley & Thomas got hurt that the play dropped off. And that we needed depth. we also have two Tackles making a crap load of money, and can't really afford another $8 million OL.
Who were we going to sign? You don't sign someone else's starter to 'back-up' money, and you don't sign them to starter money and have them as back-ups. So you sign a back-up to back-up dollars that could start and you let everyone know that a starting job is on the line. And see who rises to answer the bell.
Also, I don't understand why everyone is so down on Satele... he went from being considered one of the best draft picks in a long time and potential pro-bowler in 2007 to a BUM in 2008??
I don't get it... he hasn't played THAT poorly, and you can't blame a guy for not doing well when he loses BOTH starting guards that play on each side of him and there is no depth for replacements, leaving him with guys not likely to make the 53-man roster of 90% of the league's teams. For one, you lose a lot of talent there, and two, you lose the chemistry and cohesiveness that is needed in the middle of the line. To expect him to excel in that situation is ridiculous, in my opinion.
i agree, but we're still in need for a starting C. i think the trifecta has their eyes on the draft, perhaps rnd 2... Max Unger or Alex Mack would be a good choice.

i agree that satele hasnt proven his worth at C, but im stil looking for a Center to be chosen in the Oline heavy draft. If satele moves to G i think he can excell, and fill a void there.

Satelle got caught in the crossfire of changing schemes. He would be great in a Zone system. he is powerful and athletic and intense.
Against a big NT in a zone you double team the NT and then read the LB and one guy releases once the double team has pushed the NT off the LOS. Samson would be very good at releasing and getting up to the next level, or at maintaining leverage on a NT that has been stood up by a double-team.
IN the Parcells system, they want beefy guys who can take on their guy one on one. At 295-300lbs Satelle is giving up too much weight to hold up a DT on his own. I think if he put on 10 of muscle and maybe 3-5 lbs of fat he would find he would be better able to maintain the point of attack.
Satelle isn't really 'fat' and he isn't really 'ripped' either. Although I am not a pro-trainer, I think if he got SERIOUS in the weight room, and stayed at the buffet he could put on the weight between now and July.
he'll need it if he movs to GUard as well...so he best get himself as pumped and heavy as he can without losing his athleticism.

He certainly has the genes for it. Those Samoans are HUGE.
