Bess is Cleveland's best receiver. An upgrade for them. Gibson may be an upgrade for us. Let's hope so. thumbs up

eesti take away an 18 yard catch bess had that was nullified by a browns penalty.

I know thats what goes to the records but just saying bess is still a very good receiver.

I wish we cut cut that scrub rashard mathews and sign bess right now...

It would be an upgrade. I know the salary or whatever...but still, you dont let go of the good players you have......just like they let go of bush....

They were well under the cap they could had worked something out and signed both bush and bess....Even Jake LOng....and still sign wallace and gibson etc......

If i remember correctly gain we were well under the salary cap.

If other teams can do it so can we... you dont let go of your players like that....

If you add talent and you let go of talent you arent doing a thing.

I wonder how jake long is doing? I wonder if he is already healthy.

And yes jake long was a mess last year because of the injuries.....But bush and bess had no injury issues whatsoever.....

Bess did not drop any passes. Gibson dropped two.

Bess 1 Gibson 0

And take away the pass interference in the end zone and maybe Gibson has a TD and more yards....bla, bla, bla

We all know Bess is a good receiver. The question is...Will Gibson be an upgrade?

Seems to me your spending a lot of energy worrying about something that is not going to happen.

Exactly...and my poin tin another thread was that you should be more upset about losing Bush than Bess.

We did add talent....Lots of it.

Spilled milk....we have what we have. Why complain when we just had a WIN? I'll start bitching IF we start losing. Not before.

The REAL question is

did we KNOW we would get Brandon Gibson WHEN we cut Bess??????????

Did we?

That's the real question.

My concern is who is running the ship.

Sometimes you can be saved from sucky decisions by future events that you had no idea would come about at the time of your sucky decision.

But that does not make the decision any LESS stupid at the time it was made.

Bess had a back injury and didnt play the last 3 games... I have heard it reported that this was an issue of contention last year with Philbin, who believed Bess could have played those last 3 games. But chose not to, because they were "meaningless" games... I am not sure but I imagine Bess would have kept playing had the play off's still been a possibility...

We've gone over this once, we signed Gibson WAY before we traded Bess

Total BS debate IMO.

There's no reason we could not have had BOTH.

BUT -- at least for right now -- Bess is the superior SLOT DUDE with automatic 5-7 yard gains.

He broke a few ankles out there.

Beyond that -- it totally bewilders me WHY some around here feel they have to justify the regimes decisions by trashing ex players like Bess. I mean really -- its really shallow and beyond homerism IMO.

Bess is good kid. And he did nothing here but be a PRO and contribute to the TEAM collectively in a positive way.

And just for the sake of the "argument," WTF did Wallace do for like 60mil???? And I don't remember Bess throwing the coaching staff under the bus after one game!

The guys we GOT are not necessarily "better" than the guys we don't got. Got it?

Gibson is playing decent ball. He needs to eliminate the drops and be a little more aware of ball security -- he almost gave the game away yesterday trying to extend the pig over the goal line..

For this offense, its not even an argument, Gibson is 100x more valuable.

He doesnt have consistent hands, but he has YAC. Basically, Devone is the polar opposite.

The color analyst working with Chris Myers on the game yesterday figured it out in the second half.

he said words to the effect of:

'The thing I like most about this Dolphins offense is that all of their WR's are interchangeable. They are all big, can run and catch. You can line each of them up at any WR spot which puts the defense in a bind and allows them to create mismatches. It makes them a tough matchup for a Defensive Coordinator.'

Pretty much exactly what some of us have been arguing about why a solid player like Bess had to go...he made us predictable when he was on the field.

I've said it all along....

Keeping Bess and Gibson would of made us even more dangerous than we are now...
Bess was a cheap option to make our team deeper and more dangerous offensively.

Bess is proving the point I was making way before the season even started!

At 3 million, Bess was not a cheap 5th option or backup, and how exactly is Bess proving your point?

still doesn't change the fact he doesn't fit in the offense and is not interchangeable like the others.

First let me say that Gibson so far is far better an addition than Bess's absence.

Secondly, I don't necessarily believe that we should have kept both.

But......

Shula used to modify his system to fit the talent. Yes, that's the ole fashioned 1970's way of football coaching.

Philbin, Ireland, and company try to get guys who fit their offense are make them into players who fit their offense.

I don't give a crap about any "system" except winning. I say modify your system to fit your talent, not the other way around.

but you are still limited because Bess can't really play outside. No coach is going to build an offense or change and offense around Davone Bess. You do that when you have a guy that is so talented you have to get him on the field.

Everyone said Wallace was a one trick pony but that really describes Bess. He is better off in a traditional slot role IMO.

Shula changed his philosophy when he went from a running team to a passing team but he didn't really change the playbook. He just called more passing plays and ones with deep routes. It's not like we had a dominant runner in 1982 anyway.

Well, I'm not defending Bess. I'm just saying that when you get a talented guy (or have the chance to draft him) don't try to make him fit your system (or pass on him because he does not), use his talents to the best of your ability to do so and if that means going to a new system, do that.

I hadn't had Shula and Csonka vs. Marino in mind but that shows that he adapts the system to the talent.
