Quite the big man hiding behind a keyboard. Armando should try reporting in Afghanistan for a while to stare death in the face & get his ass humbled a bit. He could then write about the "Click off safe" look that he'd have for the rest of his life.
Well, I read the entire exchange. I have to say a few things about this. In disclosure, I need to say that I find Armando's columns horribly written in terms of literacy level. Also, his knowledge of the Dolphins seems to be at the level of say, someone on this board, just with the added benefit of having press access to get interviews. I think that someone that is in charge of covering the local NFL team for one of Miami's leading news publications should put on a better effort than what I've seen from him in the past year or so.
Now that I said that, on to the OP's link and Armando's e-mail tirade with a Vietnam veteran. Armando got trolled, plain and simple. This vet sent him an email basically calling out his opinion on the stadium expansion falling through. Then proceeded to talk about Armando's heritage. While the vet is in the wrong to get demeaning about someone's heritage, Armando is a professional(supposedly), and he should be able to shrug that kind of thing off. He writes the sports equivalent of a critics column. He should expect nasty emails now and again and should be able to simply press delete and move along.
It seems to me that Armando isn't much of a professional. In most cases, something like this that brings this kind of negative attention to a company would cost an employee his job. Lets see if it happens.
totally correct about the trolling. The vet who was the instigator of the exchange said some pretty insulting and racist things about Salguero's family and provenance. But Armando's response was over the top and certainly nothing that will be tolerated in this "God bless the troops" society---and on Memorial Day no less! Also if you notice the response was sent after midnight and from his iphone, I bet he was drunk when he wrote it. Either way expect a suspension/firing soon. I don't have a big problem with Armando's writing (he is certainly better than that idiot Omar Kelly) but at times his personal/political views leak and out and when they do, I am disgusted more ofthen than not.

I agree completely Odenn.
That vet was looking for a fight and hurled the first insults.
His comments certainly earned any insults that were directed his way in return.
Salguero clearly went waaay too far when he smeared all Vietnam Vets. That was just foolish. He should know better, and be more professional, than to get involved in an argument with some nobody behind a keyboard. Even if he was clearly provoked.

Hey I"M insulted by that. I write much better and I feel I'm more knowledgable about the Phins!
That said, absolutely....in all seriousness, as a professional you are held to a higher standard . But you can't let go like that on memorial day of all days! He needs to be let go and if I was Mr Ross I'd be cutting off his press access.
Vietnam Vets have gone through a lot. For Armando to have dug up that old wound and a stigmatism Vietnam Vets faced for a long time is despicable IMO... You can go a lot of directions when arguing with somebody, that routes Armando took was classless to the maximum degree.. You cant do sh*t like that.. It is not like the guy went to that degree with him IMO, and he is a professional representing not only himself but the company that pays him... It is definitely grounds for a firing, if he doesnt handle his apology in a sincere way.. We all make mistakes, it is how you handle it afterwards that truly defines one character IMO... Buck up Armando, handle it like a man, you made a mistake...

Truth, if you had an employee, that acted as Armando did while representing your company you would just forget about it? No matter what someone says to you while representing a company, you eat sh*t on every occasion and apologize for what ever caused the issue..
I think the apology was kind of BS. He said a lot of the right things about his comments, he just didnt really personally apologize to the guy he insulted. For that he is a coward and didnt really buck up IMO.. He needs to personally apologize for what he said to this guy, he purposely skirted that issue.. I dont see remorse, no matter what the filler was in his apology to his readers...

I never said that it should be ignored by his employer, only that it didnt rise to the level of a firing offense. Salguero wasn't bigoted or racist in his comments, he was just stupid.
If I were his employer I'd take his entire employment history into account. If this incident was part of a pattern of such behavior is fire him because he'd have been warned before.
Since this is his first offense, and since he was baited with attacks against his manhood, his family, his ethnicity and the fact he immigrated here as a child I would be inclined to give him a 2nd chance.
They only way I'd fire him is if his presence was costing the company revenue. Say if all the veterans in Florida got together and boycotted the paper.
In some ways this is similar to the don Imus/Rutgers women's hoops situation several years ag although not as bad. I didnt think Imus should have been fired for telling a bad jok and his comments were bigoted and borderline racist. The marketplace should've decided his fate. If they lost too many sponsors over the incident he'd have been let go anyway.

He doesn't owe that jackass anything more than the most cursory apology.
He Wes Vietnam vets in general for smearing them in a misguided attempt to zing one guy by insulting all of them.
You don't have to accept his apology but its silly to try to judge the level of remorse to be adequate or inadequate based on a short press release.

You should hear the stuff I'm called on a daily basis. I wouldn't be given a second chance if I unloaded on a crazy Vet during a call. If this had happened in a chuckie cheese on his day off and was video taped I would give him a pass. He would still need to issue the apology though. But he did this on a public internet forum. That's his JOB. That's where he needs to be a professional. He was acting in his professional capacity as a sportswriter wen these comments were made. That's unacceptable. To add insult to injury he did this on memorial day. I'm sorry. But he made all Cuban Americans look bad. He made the Miami Herald look bad. And ultimately if not handled properly he could make the Dolphins look bad.
Really? If this was a private Email , its not anything I'd be proud of, but its certainly a completely different story. I can't confirm or deny that but if true you know what? He is allowed to have his personal opinion. He was careless to make such comments to a stranger, but a personal conversation is a much different scenario if that's the case.

I think all but the last, worst comment were email.
I thought I read somewhere the last exchange was twitter.

Letting the flames fan out. I think Ironically the press blew this up to sound like these were public statements that he made. LOL How does it feel Armando to be on the opposite side of the Press just trying to write a story and blowing the facts out of proportion to sell papers?
I don't like the statements made by either party, but I stand by his right to say them in a private conversation. Pussy move to make anything private, made public.
Yeah, Armando has gone dark, no tweets or stories. Only stories the last few days at the Herald have been from Beasley and Barry Jackson... No Armando.....

I saw him tweet a few times during the heat game last night, but no articles or blogs on the Herald yet..
