I wanted this guy last draft coming out of Iowa.

He went to Philly and never fit into that system.

We were awarded him today off of the waiver wire.

Nice pickup.

this was the guy I was screaming for in last years draft, in the 3d round. He did nothing last year but I guess I have to be thrilled with the pick up.

I wanted us to draft him last year, too.

When teams go through a major coaching transition and roster overhaul, they often throw the baby out with the bathwater. It's happened to us more times than I want to remember. It's nice to finally be in a place where we can perhaps be beneficiaries of these kinds of things.

I think everyone liked that kid coming out...

Roster is tight tight tight because I think Rishard Matthews is a virtual lock and of course Hartline Wallace and Gibson are locks -- that means there's a ton of competition for one roster spot because it sure looks like we'll carry 5 WRs and not just 4. Does any team ever keep 6?

If one of them is a kick/punt returner.

That's why I think Clay makes it at FB over Javorskie Lane.

That way we can carry 3 TE (Keller, Sims, Egnew) and have a 4th on the roster in Clay, who can handle the limited FB duties in our offense.

3 TE's means you can carry 4 RB's or 6 WR's.

RB: Miller, Gillislee, Thigpen, ???

WR: Wallace, Hartline, Gibson, Matthews, Binns, ???

Do you want the 4th RB (Thomas/Gray) or the 6th WR (Mcnutt/Tyms/Fuller)????

I think Fuller will land 6th WR spot. We should have traded Thomas but likely can't get much. Hopefully he will get it together and stay healthy

I wouldn't be surprised to see Thomas start out in camp as the starting RB. Miller will have to take the job from him. Typical psychological move to tell Miller he has to work for it.

I agree with you BNF, I don't think we keep 6. I think they like Mathews as well. He is a type of WR we don't have, he plays big, makes a big target in the slot, and is tough to bring down.. He can fight for yards, and one guy isnt going to bring him down so easy..He also has some moves, he use to return punts at Nevada... I am hoping he makes that big leap, that you look for WR's to make from years 1-2.. I think it is Gibson's job, but I think we will see Mathews in a lot of Schemes, including some redzone and maybe more..

I am not sold on Gibson being this elite talent in the slot that will not be challenged for his spot on the field..To be honest, I haven't watched a lot of St Louis, but over the last 4 years, his stats dont blow you away. He had his best year last year with 691 yards and 5 TD's. The prior 3 years he had 4 TD's total.. While he might fit the system better, I dont think he has been a better WR then Bess has been during the last 4 years..

Who gets the 5th spot, I couldn't tell you...That is going to be one of the biggest battles on the roster as you said... We have Binns, Fuller, Mcnutt, Tyms, Sinkfield(the speedster), Jasper Collins, and Chad Bumphis. No idea about the last 2..

Crowder, I think your overall analysis is right on -- and I especially agree regarding Bess. In terms of "pure slot receiver" I'm positive we've actually downgraded. So I assume, schematically, the traditional "slot" is not critical/essential to the Sherm/Philbin system.

At this point I guess we traded Bess under the premise we could spend his $$$ elsewhere and probably needed the space specifically for 2014. Whatever -- I'm NOT a fan of personnel decisions being dictated by accountants and sundry soy bean counters -- but I guess that's the reality of today's N F L.

In closing -- since Gibson only played "slot" like 7% of his snaps last year -- I don't believe his presence on the roster (as evidenced by his core skill set and best application on the field schematically) is the dominant reason we unloaded Bess. It was a $$$ move plain and simple.
