Well, Chryen, looks like you and I were there when the Dolphins were born. Hell, I was there BEFORE they were born, when Jackie Gleason said "no" to part ownership, then thankfully Danny Thomas came along.
You probably beat me by a year. I followed the draft in the Spring of 1967 and I was hoping, in my naivete, that Bob Griese would go to a powerhouse team.
I was too naive to realize that had he done so, he would have had a longer bench time.
but he went to the Miami Dolphins. The team with Flipper, etc.

LOL. The Dolphins and I were born the very same year........1966. Hell of a year.

You old farts! Just kidding. I would've paid dearly to have been alive back during the glory days. It would have been awesome beyond description to watch Griese and Csonka play not to mention be in pure bliss watching Miami go for the perfect season.

It was a great time to be a kid in Miami. My friends and I would play tackle football trying to either be Csonka or if on defense, stop Csonka. With the occasional pass to Warfield thrown in the mix. Tag would have been safer but you can't play tag football while pretending to be like Csonka. Luckily we never got hurt.

Csonka either! At least back then they didn't let it show.
Mizzou, I can understand you don't like the Rams even though they moved to St. Louis from L.A. but what's up with hating the Dodgers, who moved from Brooklyn to L.A.?
If the team moved out of Florida I'll be done as a fan...it just wouldn't be the same.
I'd probably be done with the entire NFL at that point too...but maybe I'd go with my future local team (when I retire I'm outta Florida)...Tennessee or Carolina.

People laugh at me when I say the same thing about retiring and moving OUT of Florida. People that moved down here just don't get it. I want to see something besides flat land and a beach. I'm in love with the Tennessee mountains myself.
Chyren- I am not sure I could be a fan of this team if it left, How many Cleveland fans are fans of the Ravens and their Superbowl win. or Baltimore fans who root for the Colts...
I also have zero fan feeling for the Bucs and Jags, I almost hate them as you hate an instate rival in college...
I am not sure what I would do...... But I don't have to worry because it is never happening...

Here's the difference between us Crowder. I could definitely root for the Dolphins even if they moved to Boston or New York or Buffalo AS LONG AS THEY KEPT THE MASCOT DOLPHINs.
Or if they moved to L.A., and didn't keep the mascot.
The reason for the difference is this. I started rooting for the Dolphins in 1967 when I had never been to Miami and when I lived that year in West Lafayette Indiana, until May to Los Angeles until October then to Berkeley, California and ...........
I never set foot in Miami until 1985 on a trip to Barbadoes with my first wife.
So my roots are in the Dolphins as a team and not that, like you, you probably adopted them because they became a Florida team.
I was born into it Chyren, some of my earliest memories in life, are sitting at the orange bowl, with GNR Baby, and our dads, with their own cooler that took up another seat.. Our Dad's use to bring us to the games as early as 3-4 years old... And had season tickets ever since... I r,ember going to opening day at JRS...
I saw the end of Griese, Woodly and the birth of Marino.. When I was playing football in the front yard, on defense we were Offerdahl, and Louis Oliver, and Offense was Marino to Duper or Clayton... We also liked Jim Crash Jensen a lot for a few of his wild years...... But I 100 percent relate to JC's post about playing football as your heroes in the front yard or neighborhood empty lot...
I am native south Floridian, 3 generations 4 with my kids.. GNR baby is 4th generation local with kids who are 5th. The Dolphins are all I know or want to know.. The idea of recreating the type of loyalty and love I have for the Dolphins with another team just isn't possible...

I didn't wait to retire to move out of Florida, neither did a lot of people. For me it wasn't being sick of the beach---in fact I live not far from some really, really nice beaches in MA
If the Phins HAD to move, maybe they'd go to Portsmouth NH...you know, another tax-favorable state....and Portsmouth is on the water..so keep the name Dolphins. But I really don't want them to move at all.
Nor do I JC. Nor probably 98 percent of the fan base. There is simply way too much history to move the Phins away from South Florida. I could see them relocating to a new stadium as long as it stays in south Florida, otherwise it's blasphemy in my opinion and would lead to me protesting in the street with burning posters of Goodell and the team owner. lol

Because the Buc's are and have been since 1976 the poster boys for sucking, and the Jags aren't much better. Just don't have much interest in those teams... I have always kind of, sort of, liked Seattle though. Yeah, I get the similarity. Fact is, when I first started getting into Football Miami was the ONLY game in town. That's why I'm also a Braves fan...even though I've been boycotting them for the last ten years.
I could still get behind them if they were remained a Florida team...but truth is, I'd really hate to see them move period.

Speaking of home, been watching the Oklahoma tornado coverage lately.
Boston Strong and Oklahoma Cool.
These reporters from the rest of the country, CNN and Fox, CBS, NBC and ABC each have commented on how the Oklahoma residents, even in face of all this destruction do not seem panicked but instead have an eerie normalcy about them they the reporters are wandering about.
That's funny during all the coverage before they did that, I just assumed that since there is far more TV coverage available than in the 50's and 60's when I was there as a kid, that is why the coverage was there.
But growing up, we lived with tornadoes every, and I mean every, spring and sometimes in the fall.
It's like if you grow up in a war zone, you can't be scared every day.
(BTW there's a touching story about a guy who was born and raised in a prisoner camp in North Korea and how he escaped after having turned in his parents for trying to escape and they were executed. He had no feelings because in his view, the camp guards were the only legitimate authority he knew. However the guard he ratted out his parents to did not give him credit and they have a "third generation" policy in North Korea and it didn't matter whether he knew or not, he was punished. We need to stop bothering Assad of Syria and get rid of those bastards in North Korea and take out China if they object) but back to accepting abnormal conditions as normal.
So, I understood why my fellow Sooners weren't freaking out like the reporters thought would have been normal.
If we have "Boston Strong," we ought to say "Oklahoma cool."
This is a really good question. I like it. I think I would follow the Dolphin name. I too live out of state, but have always loved the Miami tied too it.
