Worst case scenario

Todd McShay released his latest (5.1) version of his mock draft.

I really hope he is wrong. In my opinion its the absolute WORST CASE scenario for us.

He has all 3 LT's going in the top 4 picks (with Floyd going 3rd).

He has Eifert going #6 to Cleveland.

Nassib as the 1st QB to Buffalo.

Milliner #10 to Tennessee.

Johnathan Cooper to San Diego at #11.

With Austin, Loutouleilei and Warmack on the board at #12 he has us taking Warmack.

If things went that way I'd be less than excited about the pick. I'd prefer to trade down and auction off Eifert to the teams looking to move up for him.

btw...has Austin going #13 to the NYJ.

Warmack is supposed to be the best O.G. in decades, I would be o.k. with that.

if austin is on the board at 12, I can see us trading down a few spots to someone who wants to jump the jets and take him. to me this is the most plausible of the trade up/down scenarios

Cleveland is rumored to desperately want a 2nd round pick so they can draft a TE. That's probably where the Eifert speculation comes from...it also tells me (if ture) that they do not want to spend the #6 pick on a TE. They have many needs. CB, QB, OG, WR, S, ILB, DE

This is Michael Lombardi's first draft since taking over. I think he goes with a safer selection like LG. What better way to help out your former (struggling) first round running back and QB than to draft the best guard prospect in a quarter century? Chance Warmack.

That's IF they cannot move down and pick up a 2nd rounder. Hell, maybe they end up trading with us should Fisher or Joeckel fall to 6.

I don't see Eifert going before #12. The only TEs who went that high were Vernon Davis and Kelen Winslow, and each were freaks of nature in a way Eifert is not (and Winslow dominated in a way Eifert didn't).

How exactly did Vernon Davis or Winslow Jr dominate? Because Eifert outperformed both of them in college. Surely, you are not referring to the 1979 draft.....34 years ago....besides he outperformed him as well.

Yes, Davis did run a blazing 40 at the combine but I would argue that Eifert offers different but equal traits. He is taller and while not a 4.38 guy like Davis, he is still faster than most LB's and a matchup nightmare.

Don't sleep on the fact that TE's are becoming a larger part of NFL offenses. This is not your father's NFL. smiling smiley

Winslow was a head case and still went...ironically, at #6 to Clevaland.

did you ever watch canes games when Winslow played? he was totally dominant.
Davis was a workout wonder who ran a ridiculous 40 time that landed him at #6. He didn't dominate at MD in the way his workout numbers suggested.
Not saying Eifert isn't a good player, just not "top 10" good. I'll be quite suprised if he goes before 12.

Mike Mayock ranks him 13th and Todd MCShay ranks him 10th. Considering that one or two QB's will be taken in the top 10, he could slip in there.

This is going to be a crazy draft year....and fun!

I want one of the tackles or Eifert or a trade down for Tank Carradine.

Can't we have all three? winking smiley

such a weird draft, that there really isn't anyone out there I'd be totally psyched to see fall to us.

I guess my preference would be

(1) one of the tackles (but no trade up for them, so this ain't happening)

(2) dee millner falls to 12 (unlikely but not as nuts as it once seemed)

(3) austin (not happening though)

(4) j cooper

(5) eifert

(6) one of the "big time" DTs falls to us at 12

but none of these names really does it for me.

As long as we don't reach for someone like Rhodes at 12 I could be OK

Your "fight it out" scenario would be cool, eesti, but are you sure that both are interchangeable at LT and RT? If so, I would be jazzed up but I've my doubts about Martin at RT but do think he will get back to All American form at LT and don't know that much about Watson at RT.

cannot say i am excited about any player that we will likely draft. Just hope we get a complete stud at whatever spot it is.

Watson did play some RT at FSU if I remember correctly. I believe martin was equally average at RT as he was at LT. Both may be due to lack of functional strength so I believe if he can play one, he can play either.

Typically I think playing RT, you see less of the speed rushers although I believe teams are moving guys around more these days.

I haven't written him off yet but I think we need a backup plan. Obviously so does the FO.

I'd like to sign B McKinnie as the backup plan in case JM can't play LT. And sign E Winston to play RT. Then take an OL in the first or 2d round. All of this would cost less than Albert is seeking in just 1 season.

It just seems to me that Martin sucked far more at RT than he did at LT.

but then again, Jake Long was still starting and had not got injured which I talk about to say that Martin may have been a rookie when he played LT at the end of the year but he was even more of a rookie in pre-season when he was OWNED by the Carolina Panthers and almost got Tanny and Moore killed.

Martin also played next to John Jerry. Both LT's played next to a Pro Bowl guard.

Actually I am going to back track on Watson after watching highlights. I think he is a 2nd round pick. He played at RT for FSU.

It is hard get past the obvious lack of self awareness, when a guy who calls himself "The Truth" tells somebody else he is full of himself... Lol... It seems Chyren is a lunatic and I am full of myself because we dare question him or hold him accountable for his posts.. To each their own, I respectfully disagree with your take and position..

I think he probably played RT because he was new to the sport after moving over from basketball.

If you watch Watson, he has the footwork and footspeed to play LT. He's just not there yet as a player.

I'd have no problems taking him after #20 or if Eifert and Cooper were gone.

Once you get out of the top 10-15 picks, there is very little difference between the talent level of players between 15 and 50.

In this draft, the difference between who goes #20 and who we take at #42 is minimal...its a matter of personal preference not necessarily greater talent.

It is rare for a TE to go that high...but, not unprecedented. It's a pretty good list and not all are freaks.

5th pick... Mike Ditka
9th pick....Rickey Dudley
9th pick....Kyle Brady

13th pick...Tony Gonzalez
14th pick...Bubba Franks
14th pick...Jeremy Shockey
13th pick...Keith Jackson
8th pick.....Paul Bergmann
12th pick...Tony Hunter
7th pick.....Junior Miller
13th pick...Kellen Winslow
7th pick....Ken MacAfee
6th pick....Charle Young (1973)
7th pick....Paul Seymour (1973)
5th pick....Riley Odoms
6th pick....Steve Zabel

and a few more....

I don't understand some of the things I've been hearing/reading concerning the coaches and Ireland not real comfortable with Martin at LT.

He played three games there last year....that's it!!! Why the negativity towards him right now?

Could this be a pre-draft smoke screen? Much talk of Albert going to Miami, but nothing consummated, as yet, so that says something to me.

Martin hasn't had any serious off season workouts at LT, yet.

What do you guys think of this?

If the coaches are blowing smoke up everyone's ass and they feel Martin can handle LT, how about drafting Fluker for RT, or, if Winston comes cheap enough, sign Winston?

Re: Worst case scenario

I think there are just too many indicators for me to think they have much faith in Martin. I'm not sure why exactly but they were willing to resign Jake Long. They are going after Albert. They had a chance to get two pretty good right tackles for small money (Winston and Clabo) and no draft picks and opted not to do it.

If it's a smoke screen, it could be because we want to move up and take Fisher or Joeckel. Our OC and Tannehill are very familiar with LJ as a blind side protector.

Our 12 & 42 only net us the #5 pick so maybe we are actually after the other LJ...Johnson.

In other words...I have no friggin clue. Not unlike the media.

The suspense is killing me.

Here's the thing with Albert, also.

He wants LT only and he wants $8.9M per year.

In his 5 seasons, he played in 16 games just once (2011).

In 2012, he missed 5 starts and 3 full games (back issue).

He missed more starts than Jake Long.

Is this the guy we (really) want to start at LT?

I know there are a lot of rumors about Miami trading up, but I don't see it.

Sure, Miami needs a LT (how badly depends on how Philbin and Ireland view Martin). But is Miami going to give up their 2nd rounder and whatever else it takes to get an offensive lineman?

I just don't see anyone in the draft that would be worth moving up for.

I think we draft a LT in the 2nd rnd if Martin cant win the job put him at LG.

That would be a far better way of doing it.

I don't understand why everyone thinks a high draft pick is necessary to step right in and play LT. Last I checked, we spent a high draft pick last year in Martin, who spent his whole career at LT. He's done nothing to show that he is such a bust that we need another first or 2d rounder to instantly upgrade him.
