I'd like to sign him to a 3 year deal. He's got at least 2 good years left in him. We can take the risk on the 3d at the expense of getting him at a good cap number.

If I did that, I'd trade Soliai.
Will only keep one of them beyond this year and Soliai has trade value to a team running a 3-4 defensive scheme.
The only way I trade Solia is if I draft Sylvester Williams or Star Lotulelei....and then I would have to think long and hard about it. His play seemed to have trailed off at the end of the year so I would investigate that further.
Solia could probably net a 2nd round pick (at best) for a team that needs a NT....San Fran at 34? It could be tough because of his age. Probably drops him a round or so...
It's hard to get rid of the parts that work. Our run defense was dominant at one point with those guys.
I would probably first see if he would restructure. He signed a lower than market deal last time because he did not want to move his family. I'm sure that has not changed.

I beleive that his play fell off because he's playing in a 4-3 when he's a 3-4 NT. Not really his fault. but its not going to be cured with more exposure to the system.

Guys either fit your system and your long term strategy or they don't. If they don't then its better to get what you can for them while you can.
Do you think anyone would give us a 2nd for Vontae Davis today if he'd had the year for us he had in Indy?

I don't want to restructure a guy who doesn't fit our scheme. I'd rather turn him into picks/rookies who do fit.
If I can get a 2nd for him, great. If its a 3rd and a 4th/5th...even better.
I don't buy that he does not fit the scheme. Like I said, our line was dominant for 2/3 of the season. If he was not a fit, it would have been bad from the start. Besides, we played a hybrid system prior and often lined up in the 4-3.
I was thinking the decline was due more to the injuries which he had or possible age, fitness, etc.
It's back to my old argument. Coyle runs a 4-3 system (like many other DC's) with a NT/DT and a 3 technique DT. Solia fits the scheme as a NT while Starks is the 3-tech.

if that's the case then why would you want to re-sign him?
He signed his Tender then will give only what he has to. Its a rough business from all directions. They can all say what they want , but winning Superbowls and championships is purely secondary to the Money. Not judging.........I don't blame him.

That's why, in my first post, I said it needed to be investigated....the reason why his play decline...if it actually did or was due to other injured players on the line....McD, Starks, etc.
I see your point but it is basically weighing getting paid 8.45 mil guaranteed (and then nothing) vs 12 mil guaranteed for a 3 year deal worth 21 mil.
He has no choice but to sign the tender if he wants to get paid. The tag can be withdrawn. What happens if he refused to sign and then the tag was withdrawn? Now he's in a market where teams have already filled their needs and you are worth less by virtue of supply and demand and could find yourself in a down market...which was the case this year. Nobody got paid this year outside of a few players.

Most of them?
He was hardly dominant in our new scheme. he was much better at NT in our 3-4 two years ago.

Most guys who have been tagged only go to mandatory OTA's.
Dont like it at all, would piss me off is i was a teamate. so you got franchised still making tons of money and a hell of a lot more than he should be making. Man up and join the team or give the freakin money back. World is full of poor unfortunate people. Just me i guess but i think thats a piss poor excuse and quite the a hole move. oh well let the season begin..... lol
If he's the only one gassed and sucking on oxygen on the sidelines come regular season because he's butthurt for not getting a long term deal I'll be pissed. I want team players for this franchise.
I'm not digging the douchebag "me first" attitude. He may find himself traded or not here in 2014.
GET YOUR ASS TO WORK AND OFF THE COUCH RANDY STARKS!!!
Agreed, what he is only making $8-$9M? Find a trade partner Move Odrick inside and take Sylvester Williams, Kawann Short, Jonathan Jenkins, Jonathan Hankins, Brandon Williams, or Jesse Williams
stop with all of this crap. the guy is getting 8.3 million which is what like a zillion times more than the national average?? if the jerkoff doesnt come to work can his stupid ass and let him work at burger king! i am so sick of every one of these over paid divas in football, yes its voluntary i know this but its a damn choice and the choice should be honor the team and the check. you freaking putz put up or get the hell out. If your afraid to get hurt makin that much change, give it to me and i will bust both of my legs you ass!

If I was the coach, I'd sit his a$$...my voluntary workouts would be manditory...off the record of course, provided you wanted to actuall play, that is.
I'd have zero tollerence for players that don't toe the team line. A me first attitude would get you shown the bench or the door.
