My thoughts on projected 2009 opening day lineup. I think it will change through the course of the season - even absent injury to some opening day starters.

QB - Chad Pennington
RB - Ronnie Brown
FB - Lousaka Polite
TE - Anthony Fasano
WR - Ted Ginn
WR - Camarillo/Bess
LT - Jake Long
LG - Justin Smiley
C - Jason Brown (UFA/Ravens)
RG - Donald Thomas
RT - Vernon Carey

DE - Kendall Langford
NT - Jason Ferguson
DE - Phillip Merling
LB - Joey Porter
LB - 1st round draft pick
LB - Matt Roth
LB - Cameron Wake
CB - Nmandi Osomugha (UFA/Raiders)
S - Yeremiah Bell
S - Renaldo Hill
CB - Will Allen

NOTES:
- I think Crowder's gone and an early pick goes to replace him. My guess for our first three picks (in no order - G, NT, LB ).
- I think Hill and Bell re-sign relatively cheaply
- I think FA will be used to get a player in a position that often takes rookies more than a year to get good at (CB )
- I think they'd love to get a great WR in FA, but I don't see him and I don't think they'll overspend as Penny is great at spreading the ball around to all of his weapons.
- I don't think Carey will get premium money, but he won't be cheap. He's the FA on our team that I feel least certain about my thoughts on re-signing him.
- I think both Smiley and Thomas come back fully healed
- I don't see Lewis leaving Balt...I don't see them letting Suggs go...I don't think Bart Scott is for us what he is for them with those other two and the rest of the supporting defensive cast
- they may keep Holliday in spite of his price for his leadership - if so, he may keep his starting slot. My lineup has him not starting because I think he may be gone.
- I think they'll shop Satele because he doesn't fit our system.

Well, I don't think this regime is ever going to go big after too many free agents. Will we re-sign our own? Yes, a lot of them. But, it's been proven time and time again that building through free agency isn't the right way to build a team.

Once we cut Wilford, I believe that will be a $6M cap hit. So, we need to factor moves like than into the salary cap.

No way would Jim Leonhard be a target of Parcells. Last year, Parcells talked about how he evaluated players. The first thing he does is look at whether they meet have the prototypical size and skills for the position. Leonhard is 5'8, 186 lbs. He won't even be considered.

I think Dansby is a real possibility if not franchised (and they may need the franchise tag for Warner). And I think Atogwe could be a target at S if he is not franchised.

I think we will re-sign Carey, Bell, Goodman, and Hill. But, I could see another S like Atogwe brought in to push Hill to a backup role.

There was talk that Atogwe could be franchised as well.

In my mock, I have Sean Smith coming in and Hill resigning. I see Smith as a versatile players who could play CB or FS but could be an elite Free Safety...plus he is the huge player that BP loves. He would have time to learn from a very smart player in Hill or take the job from him if he can.

I also have two CB's that could come in and learn from veterans, Goodman and Allen and still get playing time. I think our secondary as it stands would be much better with a stronger pass rush which is why I drafted English to compete with Roth, Wake and Tearrius George.

From what I've been reading Sean Smith is being compared to Osomugha as far as size and ability. It will be interesting to see where he is taken in the draft. That could be a steal at 25 depending on where Ireland has him rated. Nnamdi was drafted 31st overall.

I was hoping for Nnamdi because, like WR, I think CB is one of those positions that it is extremely rare for a player to come in as a rookie and play at a very high level. All of the positions take some getting used to, but it seems like G, RT, LB, RB are the positions where you see a relatively rapid transition from college to pro (for G and RT, it has a lot to do with the talent/cohesiveness of the rest of the line). C, S, LT, DL and TE seem to be 'medium'. QB, WR and CB seem to be the least rapid transition.

So, I was hoping that we could get the immediate help at a position where a rookie at #25 would have very little chance of immediate impact their first year. Nnamdi will be 28 when the season starts, so I think it would be perfect to get him for 4-5 years and lock down that side of the field.

I'm not against a CB in the first round, I just think that - like with Madison and Surtain - we should anticipate that even the great ones take a year or so to grow into their greatness.
