to read in another thread that both SamSam and BNF already consider Jonathan Martin to be a bust at LEFT tackle, the position in which he was an All American at Stanford.
Although I saw that he had much trouble at RIGHT tackle, it seemed to me that when Jake got hurt, he was beginning to settle in at LEFT tackle.
However both SamSam and BNF talked about signing another LEFT tackle with our number 1 pick, not RIGHT but LEFT.
While I think that Jonathan just needs time and seasoning, how many others of you consider him to be a bust (mind you I'm no great defender of Ireland but I always thought this was one of his better moves).
Jonathan Martin needs to get stronger to be a good player at either position. Having Jonathan Martin as our number 1 tackle is not that comforting at this point, at least to me... Is he a bust, of course not. He is young and has the stature to put on strength and the intelligence to improve his game, am I willing to bet our season on his vast improvement, no... Can I live with him blocking the second best DE on the opposing team as he develops, yes, Do I want him going up week in week out against the most elite DE's in the game, not really..
WHen Philbin was asked what he wants in a LT,(paraphrased) he said the bottom line is, you have to be able to block DE's.. And not 11 of the 16 DE's you face, all 16 you face.. That is the player we want at LT...
And then Philbin wouldn't even say if he would give Martin a chance to compete for the starting LT spot, when asked more then once... HE referred to more roster moves to come... All that being said, A bust after rookie year is foolish, I am not even ready to say Egnew is a bust after 1 year riding the pine, although his first year was zero ...to say Martin is a bust at this point is ridiculous...

How can anyone label Martin a bust? He only played three games at LT, and did "ok."
He was, as another poster said, an All American LT at Stanford, so the guy knows how to play the position.
Saying that, he needs this off season to get much, much stronger. Guaranteed Philbin and company will be working with him very hard to get him ready.
I would also venture to bet that Ireland will go after at least one OT in the draft, if not two. The whole OL has to be shored up, either with starters or depth.
The FA signing isn't over yet. I am sure Ireland still has his eye on some OL that are still out there. He is just waiting for the price tags to drop.
Martin was quite bad in pass protection at LT. Worse than he was at RT, which is saying something.
vs NE- 5 QB disruptions
vs SF- 5 QB disruptions, including one of the most embarrassing moments you will ever see for a LT
vs Jax- 2 QB disruptions, one of the league's 3 worst pass rushing teams
vs Buf- 3 QB disruptions
vs NE- 6 QB disruptions
That's pretty bad. 21 QB disruptions in 5 games. By comparison, Long allowed 20 QB disruptions in 10 games. Martin has a long, long way to go to be a quality LT. I think it's too early to say he's a bust. But, it would be awfully difficult to commit to him as the LT.
give martin a break. he was put at LT after never playing it in the NLF or even practicing it. This is like calling someone a bust after playing LT in the NFL after 4 preseason games an 1 regular season game. come on.

He played LT his whole college career. He was bad in pass protection the entire season. That's the main issue.

Agreed that playing LT in the NFL is a whole new ball game, but he did play that position in college for 4 years (I believe)? So in truth, he should have done a much better job than that.
I am giving him the benefit of the doubt that with a full off season working at LT he will improve to be a quality guy.
However, in the meantime, Ireland should still draft at least one OLT and sign a FA.

Unless Miami finds a diamond in the rough, who can be that stud after the top 3 are taken? Sure Johnson may be there, but he isn't solid, yet.
We better hope Martin pans out. Johnson's collegiate game is certainly not at Jake Longs level and I'm not certain that he is much better than Martin when Martin was coming out of Stanford.
