I give it better odds then "a miracle". But Pro athletes with the very best medical care available have come back and been successful from far worse injuries. And even injured he is still an upgrade from what we had at corner healthy. I still see us taking a Corner in the draft. He can contribute on that level as well, being a veteran with Probowl experience.
I like the signing. We needed to make this move... One year deal isnt much risk, if he plays back to top ten quality then he is a steal and will cost us a lot more next year. If he sucks, it was only a one year deal(little risk) with a lot more upside then resigning Sean Smith would have been to a multiyear deal...
Between Marshall, Patterson, and Grimes we should be able to find 1-2 decent healthy corners, you would hope...

We'll see if Ireland is a genius once this season gets underway. Until then.....
What makes you think Ireland is going to trade down, down, down?
As many of us have been saying on this board, if a guy that Ireland has pegged as a "must have" is still on the board at 12, then he goes with that pick. If everybody he had on that list is gone, then he trades down, if possible. If the guys he is interested in are falling like dominoes, then he just may trade down before Miami's turn comes up if the right suitor comes along.
I agree with what Ireland is doing by signing FAs to fill the holes then go BPA in the draft. Much better way to improve your team immediately.
Quite a few of these signings are for one-year deals. Ireland is going to see how they perform before signing them to a long-term deal. Good move.

Could also play out that he has a terrific year, but we don't re-sign him and we get draft pick compensation for him.
Guess it depends on how many CB's we draft and whether they pan out or not.
Don't see how anyone can complain about this signing. Its low risk, high reward.

If we are able to draft a good cb, or he outplays Marshall/Patterson... Marshall, Grimes and Patterson are all getting paid around the same, the worst of the 3 will most likely get cut.. Grimes signing just creates one more guy to compete for that money..The money has not gone to waster
If he doenst beat out Patterson and Marshall then he gets cut before day 1.. If not, one of the other guys gets cut, no money is wasted IMO.. You are just giving yourself an option to spend that money on the best player..

I am not as worried about the one particular injury as much as I would be concewrned that he is injury prone. He missed also 4 games in 2011 b/c of a knee injury. He has played 16 games once in 6 years.
It is only a one year deal so it's not all that bad. I'm sure we are going to draft a couple of CB's and he should serve the purpose as a veteran leader/mentor as well as a quality starter in the meantime.

Let's see what Grimes does before we call this a bonehead move.
I highly doubt that Ireland would have signed Grimes to a $5M deal unless he was confident that Grimes' injury is no big deal. Highly doubtful that Ireland would sign him to a contract based on Grimes saying that he is fine.
If I were to guess, I would say that the injury concern was what took so long for this deal to get done. With Ireland putting out that kind of money, he has to be certain that Grimes has recovered and is able to get on the field this year.

I agree, it is a risk signing injured players.. You either get lucky or you get a player that was a shell of his former self... Ultimately we didnt have a lot of options in FA, or a lot of faith betting on Sean Smith for real money... Worse comes to worse, one of the 3 (Marshall, Patterson, Grimes) lives up to potential, that would give us one decent #1 CB. If 2 of the 3 live up to potential, then we have something... Drafting a young one as well. Hopefully Carroll or Jimmy WIlson step up in their 3rd year.... CB, could definitely be an issue this year... But not signing Grimes would have made it even riskier..
