Another rumor today that Miami is still after Brent Grimes.
Marshall and Patterson could end up being cut if we draft a decent CB but I think we keep at least one.
Marshall would cost 2.3 mil in dead space but save us 3.4 mil
Cutting Patterson would save us 4.6 mil
Grimes is coming of an achilles injury but Kevin Coyle has experince with that in Cincy. Leon Hall had the same injury and came back in 2012 to be one of the top CB's in the league (top 2 per PFF).
That makes me feel better about signing him.
Cap hits for 2013
Patterson 4.6 mil
Marshall 5.76 mil
Grimes 4-5 mil
The FA Cb's haven't been getting huge contracts this year.
Chris Houston got 5/25mil deal
Sean Smith 3/16.5 deal
Dom Rod Crom got a 2/10 mil deal
Can we afford to go into the season with those 3 as our top CB's assuming they play well in camp?
We have 14 mil left under the cap (7 more in June) before the Louis signing.
that would be great. there is no CB worth taking at 12 othr than millner who will be long gone. can't be in a position where we have to reach for rhodes or trufant

The beatings will continue until morale improves.
If we sign Grimes then we can draft a guy like DJ Hayden in the 2nd round (if avail) and we are set. We can release the competition loser between Patterson and Marshall once we see if the rookie is able to play.
That would give us two vets to play with a new rookie.
We have addressed a lot , but CB is our biggest weakness now. Our Corners suck. We need to beef up that backfield or teams like the Pats will continue to own us. I remember no matter how many points Dan Marino put up for us , 35-40............our defense would gibe up more. I don't want to see that happen again. Ryan Tannihill is the best QB prospect we have had in decades. But he can't do it himself. Look at Dan Marino's ring finger for proof.
as well as a better pass rush opposite Wake to help the corners. NE's receiver group is growing weaker by the day....not that they won't fix it. Gronk is having surgery on his arm again. Welker is gone... Lloyd is gone...lets get some pressure on Brady to go with some decent corners.
Sure Miss the days of Surtain/Madision. Those were two SHUTDOWN corners. Allowed Zack Thomas to run freely side to side making him a tackle machine. JT giving pressure up front. Good Times.
if we can mimic that defense with an improved offense we will be a force to reckoned with.

YES! I agree Zone defense allows for to many short plays. That's How Brady has been racking it up with Welker. Zip Zip. Hit them hard and then stick with them. Makes me wish we had revis.

Louis Oliver, Jarvis Williams, Offerdahl, he had some decent guys on the other side of the ball.. It just was the holes, like JB Brown and Vestee Jackson, that created the problems, along with Olivadotti, the king of prevent defense(prevent you from winning)...
But I agree, CB is a huge need, signing Grimes, if he is healthy, would be a strong move, it would take a lot of pressure off us in the draft..

Marshall and Patterson have 75 combined career starts.
PFF had Patterson as the 52nd best CB in the league this year, which was higher than anyone on our team.
In 2011, PFF had Patterson as the league's 36th best CB, which was higher than Vontae Davis and Leon Hall, and Marshall at #49, which was higher than Charles Woodson and Cary Williams.
Marshall was injured in the season opener, and we never saw him healthy. Patterson was starting for us with just 3 days of practice in our system. It's a little unfair to pass judgement on them based on what we saw in Miami.

Marshall had an interception against the Jets in game 3.. He also had the same amount of tackles in game 4 as he did in game 1... Why do you say we never saw him healthy, his best game was definitely game 3 at least stat wise...

My bad. He first injured his back in the first half of game 2, not game 1. So, he was healthy for the Houston game, and that was it.

I agree, If we don't address the CB position in free agency , then we need to go Corner with one of the first 2 picks. Maybe Two in the first Five.

So he had his best game when he was injured?

I think they both have potential if healthy, but are you willing to roll the dice with Patterson and Marshall as our 1 and 2... CB's are definitely able to play well in the right system for their game, so I think it is possible.. But I wouldnt want to be betting the season on them as our starters who need to shut down the opposing top WRs...

Nietzsche
if these guys stay healthy and we keep them, I think we will be better at CB than most think, maybe allowing us to draft a CB & a Safety. Not sold on Clemons even with his speed

You would call his best game one when he was called for 3 penalties?
Game 1- thrown at 6 times, allowed 4 completions for 40 yards, two of those to Andre Johnson.
Game 2- injured his back in the first half, only played 24 snaps. Thrown at once, allowed 1 completion for 13 yards.
Game 3- thrown at 10 times, allowed 5 completions for 87 yards. Committed 3 penalties.
Game 4- thrown at 6 times, allowed 4 completions for 67 yards, including 2 TDs.
I guess you forgot he got his only turnover of the season in Game 3... if you are a CB, you number 1 goal is to take the ball away... You mention his penalties but forget to mention his interceptions.. a bit convenient dont you think...

It's funny in that there are no reports about the Fins and Grimes, other than Miami has an interest in him.
My thoughts as to why nothing has happened (yet) is Miami's needing convincing as to his health, then secondary is Grimes' asking price.
I don't have any info on either issue, so there is lies.
We got Grimes - chose us over Cleveland. I really wanted this signing, now we have a pro bowl corner. His injury was early on last year so he should be ready to start with us. YES!
Awesome News! This really opened the draft to the Best Players available for us! With 5 in the first three rounds that should really stir up the competition at all positions this off season!
