I can't think of a good reason why we haven't signed him. I gotta assume there is a reasonable deal we can work out with him

I am assuming Ireland has placed a value on Winston and is not budging...whether it be a dollar amount or length of the contract.

My guess is there are at least two factors out there driving this hesitation.

1. Rich draft for linemen

2. Winston is almost 30 and a short term fix

3. Uncertainty as to whether they will need to draft OL at 12 or get a strong candidate for another position at 12
- may need to use it for a CB
- may want to draft austin (WR) if available

My guess is that if we make a deal with Grimes it makes the decision easier - draft an OL in second and sign winston to play this year and develop the new guy.

If we don't sign Grimes we're likely having to draft for need at #12 for CB

If we slide Martin to LT who on this roster starts at RT? Or if we keep him at RT, who plays LT? If we don't sign a vet capable to starting that means we absolutely HAVE to draft a starting OT in the draft which is the worst approach to take. The last time we did that we ended up taking Wade Smith.
We need to sign winston or someone else who is a starting NFL tackle, short term is just fine. Then we can go BPA in the draft, and take an OL if he is the highest rated guy out there (not because we "need" him to fill a glaring roster hole).

Is it a rich draft draft for linemen? Outside of the top 3 guys, who could really come in a start right away? I think there is a huge drop off after those guys.

We got a 2nd rounder to do it last year but he had a first round grade and he wasn't all that good in his rookie year. We are still countin gon him to improve his game two-fold this year.

We need a starting tackle and an upgrade at RG at a minimum.

The details of Volmer's contract have just become public. This may pave the way for us (or another team) to sign Winston.

4 years 17 mil (4.25 per year) with incentives to reach 28 mil....most likely playing time incentives. 7 mil bonus and 8.25 guaranteed.

that's nothing for an OL like vollmer when you compare it to long. I'd pay that in a second
winston should get even less, sign him up

I bet Ireland only offered a one year deal....probably 3.5 mil.

I'm a bit surprised we haven't signed him or someone yet.

My guess is that the FO feels like we have options to cover the position in the draft, and time to wait for the market to settle some.

I'd like to see us get a reliable LT prior to the draft and pick up and OL to develop in the draft if we get him for the right price.

I'm more worried about CB now and thin we need two of them, thus getting a FA for LT would give us better draft options. Would be great to get Grimes and Winston in FA to set up options for high quality in the draft.
