this lets us go into draft for BPA, without forcing us to take OL, TE, CB, etc.

at 12 draft Austin
with our 2 2ds, take best available TE, pass rusher, DB
with our 2 3ds, ditto
with rest of draft, take a RB and BPA all the way thru

that ought to net a playoff appearance in 2013

I think I'd grab an olineman instead of a cb in round 2 but that's a solid gameplan nonetheless.

OL may not be sexy but its essential. And there are 3-4 "franchise caliber" OTs in the draft and we're definitely going to need one.

The only WR deemed to be top dog alpha (aka future numero uno certified "franchise caliber" rock catcher) is C Patterson and no way we do that with the Wallace signing.

BTW Austin is certainly exciting but I don't believe the consensus has him projected in R1 let along #12 in the entire draft. He would definitely be a reach @12 and should still be on the board with our 1st pick of R2. Some even think he'll be on the board @54 (our second 2nd rounder).

Vollmer is injury prone and Winston is a RT (putting Martin @LT and ???) either way we still need a quality long-term solution @LT so let's solve the equation in an expedient manner -- because that's also where the strength of the draft will be (in the top 12 picks).

It could be possible we could draft a OT in the first round.....

I wouldnt be mad if we do then go receiver with the first pick in the second.

Corner with the second pick in the second....

Im still thinking we are going to sign a free agent corner.

I like the plan...........but, doesn't signing Gibson stop us from drafting Austin? At the very least, Bess has to be gone to sign Gibson and draft Austin (i'm OK with trading Bess, just not sure what you'll get?)

Austin would mean no Bess, but I don't think Gibson and Austin duplicate eachothers skills

Right. Gibson replaces bess but he can play all three positions.

Austin becomes the slot specialist although he's fast enough to line up outside some of the time.

I like Gibson, but not enough to pay him $4 million per year. Is he really an upgrade over Bess? Bess is on the books for 3.4 million; which is fine for a #2 WR, but on the high side for a #3 guy. I wouldn't pay Gibson more than that.

What you guys do not understand is bess in the right system could be another west welker.

We are getting some weapons on offense....We got the best wr available and a better receiving TEnd................Now we need to sign an OT to replace long................

I mean a decent OT would do much better than long did all year in 2012.

THen watch bess post his best numbers and have a great year as a member of the phins...

No one even knew who Gibson was, now all of you want to sign him? NO!

I don't see Gibson as an upgrade over Davone Bess. Bess could have gotten pretty close to 1000 yards last year had he played in the last two games. He also has two other seasons with 800 yards (or close to it). This was with pretty inconsistent QB play.

I'm all for upgrading the position but I don't think Gibson is the answer. IF we are going to do it let's get someone explosive and lets fo it in the draft.

If we are talking about getting Tavon Austin, I would view him as a suitable replacement for Bess and his 3.5 mil salary.

I would rather have Bess as the #3 instead of Gibson.

Gibson is a different player than Bess. He is not limited to the slot position. He's also much more physical, and would be a better redzone option that Bess. He had a solid game against us this year, matched up with Sean Smith most of the game. Think about the idea that Philbin/Sherman want interchangeable WRs, guy who can play all 3 positions. If Gibson was here, that becomes a more viable thing for us to be able to do.

If we signed Gibson, I'm not sure we'd cut/trade Bess right away. I could see them waiting until draft day to make sure they got a quick, shifty slot type. But, it would seem highly unlikely they would carry 4 WRs making at least $3M each.

If we aren't going to sign Gibson or draft Austin then we can keep bess and let him walk at the end of the year.

I'd rather bring in a 3rd WR who can line up at all three spots on day one (not a rookie), draft a slot guy with elite skills AND get an extra draft pick for a piece we don't need in Bess.

How often is our #3 WR going to see the field?

Depending on formations....

2 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB, 1 FB
3 WR, 1 RB, 1 TE
4 WR, 1 TE or 1 RB

Dustin Keller, Wallace and Hartline are going to get their share of snaps on passing downs.

Some say he is a bigger play maker than Bess. I have not seen him all that much but that would be the only reason I would replace Bess with him....and if he plays for less than 3.5 mil

The dude is EXACTLY the type of player you find a way to keep because his "intangibles" are excellent AND he represents the franchise with total class and dignity. And in case you savages haven't been following the program -- that counts a LOT to this regime. And I expect them to honor their mission statement.

You don't just dump a player like Bess because you think someone else might perform some tricks better. There's a chemistry issue to keep in mind and football is STILL the consummate TEAM GAME.

Or perhaps that's too old school for the stat dweebs among us with their NFL apps?

You just dont get rid of a pretty good player to sign another or draft another and you dont know how good that other player is going to be.

Even if Miami resigns Long, Ireland still has to get another OT, either thru FA or the draft. Long has gotten very brittle, so Miami must have a capable back up in the event Long goes down.

True...maybe a versatile player who can play G and T in later rounds
