With this regime I wouldn't be surprised, but I would be very disappointed.

I personally never expect him to have chunk yardage or break it for a TD, but he's one of the best at what he does. This dude is pretty clutch when you need to keep a drive alive and is one helluva possession receiver. He's an excellent route runner and gets open by shifting quickly. The dude has great hands & gives it his all, all day long. You can count on him to lay out to catch a poorly thrown ball inches off the ground to get you a 1st down - and we've all seen it many of times.

I'm guessing that he's the kind of guy who'd be willing to restructure his contract if he were asked to in order to stay here when the time comes. This is the only team that gave him a shot in this league when nobody else would, and I'm pretty sure he appreciates the opportunity that the Dolphins gave him. Of course I'm not just guessing, but being optimistic here lol

I also like Bess and what he has done for the Fins and how he got to where he is.

I would agree that he would (probably) restructure his contract to stay in Miami, but.....there could be that one team out there that would be willing to pay him more than he could make in Miami, and he would jump at the chance.

Loyalty will only get one so far. Does Miami have any loyalty to Bess? They would let him go in a heartbeat if they could get someone better and faster to take his place. So much for loyalty.

And trust me....his agent would be in his ear about the loyalty stuff.

I am a big Bess fan. I think he works really hard, and is a dependable player. But, I also realize he is limited by his lack of speed and size.

Based on various tweets, Brandon Gibson is on his way to Miami for a free agent visit. 57% of the targets (not catches, but targets) to Gibson resulted in a first down last year, #1 among WRs in the NFL. If he gets signed, Bess' future in Miami is very much in doubt. The fact that we are even talking to Gibson (and it was rumored we were talking to his agent last weekend, too) says that Bess' future is in doubt.

Soliai counts $8M against the cap this year, and only plays about 65% of the defensive snaps. How is that contract friendly?

all I can say is, if we decide to move on from bess we better not cut him. trade him for anything out of the division, I really don't want to see him becone Wes Welker 2 for the Pats....

We finished 13th in rushing defense last year after a late season collapse. We were on pace to finish in the top 5.

We are probably worse than 13th if Solia leaves and we only have Starks and Odrick. That's not acceptable. We are still without a good backup DT for the rotation.

Gibson for 5 mil or Bess for 3.5....I'll take Bess. I'm worried we are investing too much money in the WR position. It's fine for our top 2 guys as they will always be on the field but paying 4-5 mil for a #3 is not the way to go.

What has Gibson done that is so special? He has averaged 522 yards per season and 2.25 TD's. He had 691/5 last year....Woopeee

If anything we should be drafting someone to offer competition. That is the right way to do it so we can get a cheap rookie contract.

I don't know why anyone would think dumping Solia is a good idea. We are not strapped for cash and he is one of our better DL

I wouldn't dump him. I might trade him. but I wouldn't cut him unless we needed the money for Dummerville.

No way you dump Solai. He routinely blows up running plays. You have to gameplan around him. Our run D took a hit against the patsies and niners at the end of the year. Still, in those two games, the offense did nothing. Thats not going to happen this year. We will have a top 5 run D if we keep Solai

In 2010, Paul Soliai earned a +12.4 grade for run defense from PFF, and ranked 12th overall among all DT/NT.
In 2011, Soliai earned a +2.8 for run defense, and ranked 46th overall among all DT/NT.
In 2012, Soliai earned a -1.0 for run defense, and ranked 49th overall among all DT/NT.

I wouldn't do either, at least not in the near future.

As far as dumping Soliai, that is out of the question. It is extremely difficult to get a big man (like Soliai) for the middle, and when a team does get one, they better damn well hold on to him, until the team either gets someone who can replace him, or his contract no longer matches up with his production.

Right now, Soliai fits very well into the Fin's plans.

Wow...that's what you call declining. Something was up last year. We started out the first half of the year as the best rush defense in the league and then finished slightly above average. I know McD was injured and Soliai was nicked up (Just had arthro on elbow) but that's no excuse for decline in 2011. Got paid and got lazy?

Okay, Mark. This is an objective question. How much could that "game planning" of opposing teams to devote so much attention to Solai be responsible for his declining stats.

If a rookie breaks into the league and starts leading the lead in receptions, it is a sure bet that the next year and every succeeding year, he's going to draw more coverage by more top notch defensive backs and his stats are going down.

As pointed out above, however, that's a blessing to us as well because all that means is that if we get TWO Solais (like a Kawaan Short for example) then there is NO stopping us.

Youd have to be insane to cut soliai our best dt. I understand if w had no cap space. But we are well under and still have enough to sign a couplemore free agents and draft picks. Those. That want or. Suggest we do this are the same people that agreed we let welker go godgod did that work out. Get rid of your stars to sign an unknown. Great.

When exactly did Bess become a "star"?

Does anyone find it interesting that the 3 players who met with Philbin last year on hard knocks as the players representatives to discuss the C.Johnson dismissal...Bush, Long and Dansby....are all gone?

I bet you bess goes to new england and becomes another welker.

The sky is the limit for bess now that he has some talented company.

Maybe. Their offense is better suited to his skill set.

But Welker wasn't a star here either. Just a good football player...who BECAME a star when he hooked up with Tom Brady.

maybe I'm wrong.

maybe Bess will go out and put up all-pro numbers this year and force us to lock him up long term.

It would be great if he does. Then he'd be a star.

Until then...not so much.

Armando Salguero ?@ArmandoSalguero

Dolphins source tells me plan is to make a corresponding move to add an OT in free agency after Long goes to St. Louis.

Armando Salguero ?@ArmandoSalguero

The Dolphins view Garner as a solid backup tackle. This move is NOT the corresponding move to upgrade the OL following J.Long's departure.

I believe players typically report for voluntary off season workouts around April 10th...a few weeks before the draft.

One thing I am curious about....(and the coaches too) is to see if John Jerry reports to camp in shape. He reported last year at 390 lbs. I believe if he shows up over 340 lbs, he is as good as gone.

He could probably be a pretty decent RT if he would committ himself but he would need to be under 330 lbs (6'5). I don't see it happening although it is a contract year for him. I think he like's donuts more than money.

Jerry played 1,053 snaps out of a possible 1,057 in 2012. He also gets a mandated pay raise from 600k to 1.323 mil this year. (Same goes for Rashad Jones). Maybe that will motivate him????

I don't get the sentiment for dumping Bess or Solai?

1. Bess - Something wrong with having 5 good receivers?
- Besides Bess will produce a lot more when you have both Hartline and Wallace spreading the field out. Yes more chunk yards and yards after catch.

2. Why is it that the Fins fans feel like we can't keep multi levels of talent. As long as we have cap space I'd love to see us have depth.

It has been years since defenses feared a Miami passing attack. I for one look forward to hoarding some talent

Just trying to be realistic. It's not about dumping Bess. Bess is not under contract for 2014. That's problem #1. If they are not committed to him as part of the long term plan, are they better off trading him to get value before he leaves?

Bess has not produced chunk plays or been a red zone threat with 4 different QBs, or with a deep threat in Ginn stretching the field, or with Marshall drawing double and triple coverage.

Bess can't play the X or Z position, but Hartline, Gibson, and Wallace would all benefit by getting time in the slot position (more likely to get a free release at the line).

When Bess was injured, the coaches liked the idea of a big target like Binns in the slot.

Philbin, last week, said that he didn't envision a lot of 4 WR sets. He said it limits your options. The Fins have 4 WRs due to make over $3M this year. But, they don't plan a lot of 4 WR sets? Something does't add up there. And you can see Philbin's point. With the money they gave Keller, he's not being replaced to go to 4 WR. And if you take the RB out to go to 4 WR and a TE, it really does limit your options, and gives the defense one less thing to worry about. The most common personnel grouping you will see this year, in my opinion, is 11 personnel, meaning 1 RB, 1 TE, and 3 WR. And if you are usually only using 3 WR, why are you paying 4 of them over $3M?

And do they like Binns? or Matthews? Or Thigpen in the slot? Do they like Keenan Allen in the draft, supposedly a perfect fit in the WCO? Or do they like Ryan Swope? I would be surprised if we don't draft a WR. And if we do, how does that guy get to play?

When Bess is under contract for 2014, then I will think he is safe. Until then, I have my doubts about how he fits. It may not happen until after the draft. We'll see what happens.
