Didn't his parents say they met her? The only explanation for this whole story..........is, there is no explanation!
Pretty sure if someone duped him, they'd be able to trace emails and what not back to whomever it was, i'm calling that for whatever effed up reason there is, Teo' was in on the hoax.

'holic, it seems it was some one from the Manny Tuiasosopo family who were friends with Teo.

I think it's going to come out that it was just one colossal what we used to call in college "PIMP" aka prank.

Probably played by Tuiasosopo on his friend and he probably got a girl to play the part and introduced her to Teo's family at a time Teo was not there.

I don't think the kid was necessarily in on it but the big question is what's going to happen to his pro football career.

Take part in the poll.

The story I read indicated his parent told reporters that Te'o had met her, she had visited him in Hawaii and they were looking forward to meeting her at the Wake Forest game.

Maybe Manti Te'o doesn't even exist. I mean I watched the whole BCS Championship game and never, ever saw him on the field. It was like he was invisible!

RESPONSE: No, Chris, I know he exists because I saw him try to tackle that Bama running back and get flat run over.

you're STARTING to think that? It was the first theory that entered my mind, before I even saw a news story about it.

And I'm certainly not making fun of the guy or gay people because of this. It's just sad that in this day and age, in what is supposed to be a free country, people feel the need to fabricate this sort of ruse. Allegedly.

------

ETA: I could certainly be dead wrong about the theory above, just saying it seemed the most likely to me at first. It could very well be the hoax from a 'friend' and/or false online relationship with someone he *thought* was a woman, that ended up not being a real person.

In the end, it doesn't matter that much (to me).

With all the abuse and other of (real) women that goes on in sports, assaults, rape etc. not to mention other bad choices (unmarried pregnancies while still in school no less), this pales in comparison.

if he's guilty of a PR or media hoax, that's still wrong but much less of an offense than what all-too-often happens to (real) women in sports.

if he's simply that naive and trusted people he thought were his friends, then I really feel sorry for him. Welcome to the real world kid, and best of luck in your future!

Speaking of things that are wrong, let's not drift into the area where we're making fun of gay people.

my theory:

he is gay. because of this, he was unusally receptive to an online relationship with a girl who he didn't have to see. he really did believe she was a real person, at some point. he played up the relationship to his buddies to answer the question of "why is mantai never around girls" or "why is manita never interested in hooking up with the tons of chicks who (surely) throw themselves at him." the answer this "relationship" provided is that he was in a serious long distance relationship. he had to embellish the story (saying he had "met" her) so that it would be more believable. I am sure he really played it up to his family (so they would not know he was gay), telling them they had met, stories the dad has repeated to the media.

at some point the story of the girlfriend got picked up in the media (after she "died"winking smiley and took on a life of its own. at some point he probably realized it was a hoax but was too late and he had to keep retelling the story since the train had long ago left the station. it just got away from him and now he is screwed.

my prediction is that when he finally speaks, he will come out as gay, simultaniously changing the subject of what an idiot he was and making him a hero to the media and liberal types for his courage (and probably making him a bit of a pariah to the league). he still goes in the first round and will be seen as "brave" as opposed to an idiot or hoaxster.

I feel pretty strongly that this is what happend and will happen.

What motive did the other people have to keep up this ruse for 3+ years. In his own word spending 4-8 hours on the phone a day just to tell him she is dead... Forget about the cost, How did they gain anything to waste all of that time and money with multiple people.. You guys are attorneys Berk and Chyren where is the motive, this began way before he became famous 3+ years ago by his own admission...

Crowder I haven't heard the 3 year bit. But the motive that the "other people" who were in on the truth would have been like all family members and friends of a person who stands to make millions.. that is, simply that he actually does get a chance to make those millions. Who knows what happens to his draft chances if it is revealed that he is gay.

Of course, what motive those other people have to be on a first name basis with a multimillionaire is one that is obvious.

Yeah but they killed her off according to him, a couple months ago.... What's the point? He stopped talking to them? He said he started recieving calls from her old number, and finally talked to someone claiming to be her or that she was still alive on Dec. 5.. That is when the ND AD admitted Teo knew. Also if he knew it was hoax and didn't want to distract his team why did he still tell them before the BCS around December 26.. And once the game was over why didn't he come clean that he was hoaxed? I just don't buy any of it... And why hasn't he come out and spoke since this dropped to clear the air if he was nothing but a victim... Seems like he is holding back waiting for information to drop, so he doesn't get caught in more lies later... Now other people come out and deflect his part in this to take one for the team... Keep him the victim, whatever it is the guy should just come clean unless he is a complete psycho and on that note look out we are in for another ride... Cause if he is , he surely isn't going to come out and tell you... Unless they play the un diagnosed mental illness card in which he is a victims again...

Wait a minute, Crowder, you question to berk and I was why did the "other people" join in the hoax.

I assumed for the purpose of the argument that those other people indeed KNEW it was a hoax.

Your last post is all over the place and goes back and forth between arguing whether he was duped, whether he continued to lie after he knew he was duped and everything else EXCEPT why his friends and family went along with the lie.

Yes Chyren, I was questioning what motive the others had to pull this hoax over on Teo for 3+ years on the assumption Teo is completely innocent and was 100 percent duped...it doesn't make sense the amount of time invested for no pay off...What motive would someone have to do this as a nasty act with such time involved for nothing?s

the story he told just left out the part about being gay.

I think this story is going to die unless someone can dig something up to contradict it, which may not happen if he doesn't talk about it any more.

but it's pretty shady he had to take 2 days to get his story together, then agree to meet only off camera and with his atty present and late on friday night, which in terms of timing is page 1 of the PR playbook if you are trying to bury news. those are not the actions of someone telling the 100% truth

I don't know about "multiple" people but some chick came out and said it was her and their mutual cousin, Tuiasosopo, that did it. I'm not adopting that position but I'm just saying that with you kids that is entirely possible.

What do you expect from a school that has its own refs that wins games for it.

Notre Dame has always been a BS program. This is just more BS. I'm almost glad that Saban beat them so bad.

Growing up a Canes fan, I have a healthy contempt for Notre Dame. How many times did they beat the Canes on BS calls? It was Notre Dame that gave Miami the "Convict" label in the 80's, acting holier than thou as if their team had the most perfect characters. They still needed the refs to bail them out of any meaningful game. And the TV contract was just a joke.

I just laugh when I see stuff like this. I'm not laughing at the player - this kind of nonsense can always be expected from players on ANY major program these days. But I'm laughing at the lame attempt at an excuse and cover-up. Only Notre Dame would try to explain something like this away...
