This story defies belief. And the nd statement makes no sense. How could teo be duped? He claimed spending time with someone who doesn't even exist. This is going to get weirder I bet

The only way that works is if he never met her and only talked to her on the phone or internet.

Maybe the whole thing was a move by him or the Notre Dame PR folks to gain some sympathy in consideration for the Heisman trophy.

I mean after watching the BCS Championship game it was obvious that their number one ranking was a hoax as well.

No way the Notre Dame Administration had anything to do with this.

I'm the last guy on the planet who would blindly defend them, but they are far to smart to intentionally risk their public brand on a hoax.

Maybe he made the girlfriend thing up to throw people off his trail. I mean has anyone considered that maybe he's gay.

If that got out I think, it would drop his first round draft status. Unfortunently that's still the world we live in and teams would have to consider the money they would lose in taking a chance on the first openly gay NFL player.

It was discussed on the radio up here in the Panhandle (Southern Sports Tonight 100.3FM). Of course this is the Panhandle. eye rolling smiley

I agree with Truth however, I can't imagine the University organization getting involved with something like this. I also agree that it's certainly bizarre to say the least.

How can you have a girlfriend you never met? Has anyone on this site in their entire lives, ever had a girlfriend at any age, you never met?... That is what I thought...

Because,

There are people, especially from that generation, who do meet people on line and consider them boyfriend/girlfriend. That's how (starts shaking a walking cane) many kids these days conduct their social lives (or lack thereof).

Maybe if you are 12, but not 21....
On another note, Ross Tucker tweet this morning had me rolling
"Jeff Ireland is going to have some crazy questions for Manti Teo"

Many of today's 21 year olds conduct themselves as if they're 12, I"m here to tell you. Especially those who are coddled and sheltered from the real world.

Yeah this guy was so passionate about her and we learn he never met her that is strange. And to his credit he now spins it to make himself the victim.... genius! pure genius!!!

yeah i think they supposedly went back to 2009, so 3 years and to never have met her that means he must have been heavily involved with the 5 fingers of death ha ha ha

I'm starting to think Te'o is gay and used the alias of this girl to communicate with his partner because he didn't want it getting out that he was gay.

Any chance this scandal causes his draft stock to drop? Maybe he'll be available at #12? If so, we should take him in a heartbeat!

I'm not buying that line of thinking.

Why create a mega story to draw attention from something nobody was even discussing?

If the idea he did it because he was gay were true wouldn't the gay rumors have to have proceeded the hoax?

And won't he want to stop drawing attention to the hoax?

At this point I suppose anything is possible.

Maybe I just want to believe he was naive and got bamboozled because he came across as such a good kid.

That's a fair statement in its own right, but I just don't see the benefit for the school in perpetrating the hoax or covering up a kids sexuality.

First, you can't cover that up forever. What if they did all this as u suggest and two years from now he decides to "come out?"

The kid would move on with his life but the school would be left with a reputation in tatters.

And if ND is going to survive as a football money machine, it's reputation is everything.

Don't see how they risk all that to cover something up that wouldn't stay covered up.

The whole thing is so odd.

But let's keep in mind, he is a Mormon. With the generation he's grown up in and his religion's strict views on premarital sex, perhaps an online relationship wasnt all that abnormal?

What really makes this strange, and supports Te'o's position is former dolphin and current cardinal FB Reagan Mauia said yesterday that he actually met this girl in Samoa at a charity event hosted by Troy polamalu. And that they became close and he was there to support her during the death of her father.

In addition, a former Stanford player said Te'o would ask them if they ever met the girl after they played them.
