That was more interesting than I'd expected it to be.
Interesting aspect of the article is that Ross is *not* threatening to move the team. If he doesn't get the hotel tax, he still plans on having the team stay put. But since he's no spring chicken, as Truth says he'll have to sell it to *someone*. and the next owner might not be averse to moving the team.

Exactly.
Saw some tweets from the press conference.
Figure 500 million renovations.
Ross to pay $250 million and any cost overruns out of pocket.
Other $250 mill comes from raising bed tax at hotels in Miami-Dade (not including Miami beach) from 6% to 7%. Nothing out of pocket for taxpayers.
The debate we had last time was more in relation to Broward.... It is still a complicated matter... For instance Miami pretty much forced the Marlins to change their name from Florida Marlins to Miami marlins as part of the deal.. I am surely not suggesting changing the name of the Dolphins as Miami demanded of the marlins, however, if they wants Broward Hotel money to be taken away from such events as the Air and Seas show which is or has been a Fort Lauderdale event, then some concessions are going to have to be made IMO... If it was up to me, I would promise Ross 25 million for each play off victory over the next 10-12 years.. If he doesn't win any, then no I don't want to help subsidize him, on the other hand if he wins a SuperBowl I got not problem giving 100 million in one season...lol

Ps- every stadium deal in south Florida has been a debacle to the tax payer.. The original Miami arena, the sunrise deal for the hockey stadium, the American Airlines arena and the new marlins stadium... So it isn't a case of whether or not the taxpayer will get screwed..lol.. As someone else pointed out what the Dolphins have going for them, is they have never used their mulligan of screwing the taxpayers yet in all of these years, while others not so much..

They should have waited until next year to launch this proposal. Dolphins might be competitive and by default win some fan/voter support, as an added bonus the Marlin stadium thing might fade a little bit from memory in a year's time.

You must mean every stadium deal *Since JRS* has been a debacle.
Joe Robbie Stadium was built by Joe Robbie, with his own money, and no taxpayer money. He put everything on the line for that building.
JC- that is why I said what the Dolphins have going for them is they have not used their mulligan of screwing the taxpayer... Joe Robbie and then Wayne spent a couple hundred million plus about 4-5 years ago on the stadium out of his own pocket, to help land the last Super Bowl that was in Miami.. If the taxpayers had contributed to the building of JRS, there is a good chance the Robbie's would not have been in the debt problems after Joe died that they were in that helped force a short sale of the team so to speak...Although the death tax really did them in as Owners...

That's true...just makes even more noteworthy the sacrifices Joe Robbie made for the community.
It came as a surprise to me that Mr Ross would only fund about 50% of his stadium's renovation. Expecting Dade county to pick up the balance via some kind of hike in hotel taxes wouldn't be much of a burden on local residents, but I think he has a lot of brass seeking money from the government to support this project.
Keep in mind that I seriously doubt that Ross would simply reach into his assets and come up with 200+ million bucks. He's likely to seek fellow investors to help him come up with dough. Billionaires have an uncanny way of doing things successfully with "other people's money" in order to get what they want.
The stadium should be rejuvenated to make it contemporary like the new
Cowboy stadium. How was that project financed? Did Jerry Jones use the money he had in his wallet or did he use "other people's money?"

But he's probably thinking he should at least give it a shot? The Marlins got away with it and they had crappy fan support before *and* after the new stadium (despite winning two World Series in the not-too-distant-past). Ross is asking for less money, for a better product.
For the record, I'm generally against public money for these things, just saying what his rationale could be.

That would cost a CRAP of a lot more than what is being proposed. The Cowboys have a brand new building that cost more than 1.1 Billion.

Little of both. Well, a lot of both. He used his own money plus the taxpayers.' They raised local sales tax, car rental and hotel taxes to help finance the Cowboys stadium.
