of the kicker. Never works.

At least not recently.

Actually helps as the announcer said.

I can't remember the game this season but there was one in which a coach was criticized for calling a timeout when the field goal would have been blocked. Probably was one of ours for me to remember it.

Now that I remember I think it was because I remember posting that I thought that the offense had relaxed and let our guy through on the block.

But this one today was entirely different. To me the kick went off before you heard the whistle. It was what they call in golf a shank to the right.

As the announcer said, when the second kick came, you could see the kicker correct to the left and it went straight through.

Had Pete Carroll not called that stupid "ice the kicker" timeout, the field goal would have been missed and the Seahawks would have won.

I never thought much of it anyway.

When you have a big important crucial act to perform, delay always helps.

Suppose you have a crucial meeting scheduled to begin at 1 pm after lunch with out of town execs from the company.

You don't have lunch that day. You sit at your desk preparing. Your nervousness peaks at 12:55 p.m.

However at 12:56, you are told that the meeting has been delayed until 2:00 p.m.

You're telling me you're going to be MORE nervous at 1:56 pm than you were at 12:56.

No, you're more relaxed. You've already been through the fear but you didn't have to perform.

And a kicker has the added benefit of having been given a practice run-through.

And BTW, it's total Pete Carroll dishonesty to try to say that he didn't call timeout.

That's BS. Like a ref is gonna do that on his own.

I remember. That was the game when Sporano laughed at the phins, how embarrassing.

What an idiot....

LOL. Well, Chris, like I said, the Jets (if it was that game) may have lightened up on that pass protection after hearing the whistle.

Funny to have me defending Philbin. But like I said, the "freezing the kicker" probably worked about the first 3 or 4 times it was tried in the history of the NFL and has not worked since. The kickers, like today, generally just use it as a free kick with a chance to see how the wind blow affects the ball.

I think on a long kick over 45 you do not ice them, that just gives them a chance to correct miss.

on a short kick i think you ice them as they have to think about screwing up a short kick.

Allegedly Carrol was not angry because he was 'pretending he didn't call the timeout' he was angry because the kicker was permitted to kick the ball.

next time call-it sooner....or NOT AT ALL!

That's exactly right realist. You have to call it as soon as he starts to pace off his setup. Otherwise you give him a practice kick.

As for him missing the practice kick...there's no way for anyone to know how focused he was or how the whistle impacted the kick.

To presume he'd have missed a live kick be ause he missed the practice shot with no rush and the refs blowing the play dead is just silly.

RESPONSE: This assumes the truth of your prior statement that he, the kicker, knew it was a practice kick.

with no rush and the refs
> blowing the play dead is just silly.

RESPONSE: Just my opinion and what I thought I heard but I thought I heard the whistle blow as he was running toward the ball to kick it.

If the whistle was blown a lot earlier, as you say, prior to the snap of the ball, I would agree with your point but I didn't see it that way.

I have never been a kicker so i cant say however I have played basketball and i think you can equate kicking a clutch field goal to shooting clutch free throws. Infact I think kicking the fieldgoal is harder cause people are running and jumping around you

That being said icing a freethrow shooter does work. You have to call a time out before he shoots to let him get nervous by overthinking the situation. If you call a time out to let the kicker go to the sideline and get yelled at by dumb defensive goons who say you better make this or thats your a$$ lol.

However if you let him kick it and then call time out you hurt yourself since he just got a practice kick...

In hoops, don't you have to call the timeout before the ref gives the ball to the shooter?

Maybe a similar rule in football... Once the official winds the play clock the timeout can't come from the bench?

im not quite sure what your saying so let me rephrase it.

you have 10 seconds once you get the ball to shoot the free throw. If a time out is call (and yes the coach is allowed to) you go back to the bench wait 20sec or 1min depending if full timeout and then walk back to the free throw line to shot. If you cant hold your nerves all this extra time WILL rattle you

Now kicking field goals once the official winds the play clock to start play (assuming you did not just call a time out and they are just lining up). The kicker goings through his step ritual and then you wack him with a time out (which can come from the sideline/bench). He now has to go back to the huddle/ sideline and spend more time thinking about the kick and if he cant hold his nerve he will miss the kick...

It's my understanding that in hoops you can't call a time out on defense. I was under the impression that once the ref gives the ball to the player at the FT line (starting that 10 second clock) only the offensive team can call time out.

That's what I was trying to confirm or get clarification on.

oh yea good question, anyone can call a timeout on a dead ball... I was confused about that as well, I just checked grinning smiley

I like that the refs just look the other way when the kicker gets his practice kick in. That should stop this nonsense more than anything else.

Miami Dolphins. Always Perfect.
