Bottom line none of our f/a are irreplacable. None of them should come into negotiations like we just made the afc championship game. They should all go and test their value in the open market. Especially Hartline. I would hate to lose Stark, Smith or Long but really each are replacable. If they are then so is Hartline and his 1 td reception.
Losing Hartline would be taking away the guy Tannehill had the best chemistry with. For that reason alone, it's really difficult to let him leave.
Randy Starks is still playing at a high level. Sure, Odrick could slide inside full time, but I think that's a downgrade against the run.
Anthony Fasano has been one of the better TD scoring TDs in the league since he has been here. And he's an excellent blocker. There is no other TE on the roster who can block and also be a solid receiving threat. Charles Clay may not fit in this system (he's not really a TE), and Michael Egnew may not fit in the NFL. If you let Fasano leave, you are looking at at least 2 new TEs.
Smith has had 4 years. He's inconsistent in coverage, extremely soft in run support, and lacks any ball awareness/skills. Quite frankly, he's not worth what Marshall got for a contract last season.
Smith is big...which makes him an asset...despite his average ablities.
They won't want to pay him huge money...but someone else will...so I can see him getting the Tag and we draft a replacement.
Starks and Hartline are important to re-sign....so over-paying a little for them is fine with me.
I heard a radio interview with Buddy Nix (Buffalo GM)....and he correctly said...if you sign a Free Agent who is a clear starter...you will over-pay for his services. There are no bargains for starters.
Sean Smith was better when we still had Davis...not great...not a lockdown corner....but a starter in a good tandem. The Franchise tag would allow us time to develop a youngster, but not tie our hands long term.
People on this site have been saying for years that we should try Smith at FS. I'm watching the Pat's game on yesterday and the commentators are saying what a great move the Pat's made playing cb MCourty at S.
Earlier this year Raven's GM Ozzie newsome fired Cam Cameron and inserted Jim Caldwell in his spot.
Guess what 2 teams are playing for the afc championship.
Wish our front office would figure it out and make moves like this.

Smith can't catch and hes far better in press coverage than he is in zone...What's the point of moving him to FS?
As for Cameron...it took the Ravens 4.5 years to figure out Cameron was a bad coach.

Hartline -- if he goes out and tests the market, he will get some interest, however, no one will be paying him the big bucks. If Miami raises his contract $2-3M, I'm sure he would sign with the Fins. And yes, he (pretty much) was RT's security blanket, but only one TD to his credit is not much of a bargaining tool.
Starks -- good, not great player. If Miami lets him go, do they have someone who can replace him? Just as above, add a couple more million to his contract and he probably stays.
Fasano -- IMO, there will be very little interest in him. Resign him and he would be a very good #2 TE (that being, of course, if Miami gets a starter either thru FA or the draft). I don't think he is making a hell of a lot right now, so a slight raise won't hurt and he remains with Miami. I think we all know that Egnew is basically on his way out, so that leaves Clay. I don't see much future for him either, especially if Miami can get that #1 guy.
Smith -- this is the real problem. Good CBs are hard to find, and if Miami lets him go, this becomes priority #1 this off season. I don't think Marshall nor Patterson have the talent to be a "very good" nor a "shutdown" corner. Ireland is really gonna have to do some late night homework on this one. Naturally, if Miami lets Smith test the waters, there are teams out there that will offer him the money he and his agent will be looking for, so if Miami doesn't wrap him up early, he is either gone or will have to pay more than if they work out a deal now.

Safeties have to tackle and play the run. Smith can't do either of those things.

Hartline has led the team in yards per catch all 4 years he has been here. He is not going to sign for $3M per year. He is going to get at least $5M per year.

Starks is very, very good at his position. He made over $5M this year. $7M for Starks?

Fasano has consistently graded out as a top 10 all around TE by PFF, because of his blocking. He made $3M this year.

Good CBs are hard to find. And Smith isn't one of them. CB is the #2 priority of this offseason, whether or not Smith is back or not.
Only 6 mil is guaranteed in his contract and he was given a 3.3 mil signing bonus and already earned 2.95 in 2012. The Dolphins are not on the hook for the remainder of his contract unless he remains on the roster. He has already earned more than his guaranteed money.
He will probably come to camp and compete til we see how Marshall is doing health-wise. They can both play the nickle and outside.
Let's see what Coyle can do with the kid. My guess is that he is better suited to zone than SS.
