How come all of these coaches...

Most of the worst coaches in the League are ex-Dolphin coaches. Look at this pathetic list:

Turner - Head Coach Chargers (a mess of a team)
Cameron - Offensive Coordinator- Ravens (never gives the ball to Rice)
Wannedstedt- Defensive Coordinator- Bills (all that talent, so little results)
Linehan -Offense Lions (ditto wanstache)
Bowles- Defense Eagles (turnstile defense)
Sporano - Offense Jest (shambles)

What a total list of buffoons, no wonder the phins have been a laughing stock all these seasons.

only 2 exceptions are Lovie Smith of the Bears and Mike Nolan - Defensive Coordinator Falcons (nothing special), who are ok..but nothing special.

What does that say about all these teams that signed our retreads?

Oh, and when did Lovie Smith coach for Miami?

And I'd say Mike Nolan is doing pretty well, seeing as his team is 11-1!!!

Lovie smith was the RB coach many seasons ago. Falcons record is good, but I get this feeling they are going to flop when they have to face some real competition in the playoffs.

Turner, Wanny, and Cameron are good coaches...Turner and Wanny just aren't very good head coaches. Cameron never got a real shot at being a HC so we have no idea how he is in that job. (one season on a piss poor team is not enough of a sample)

The biggest problem with most, if not all, of our ex-coaches are that they are conservative, run first, and win with defense guys...or come from defensive backgrounds.

You must have him confused with somebody else. Lovie Smith was a LB coach at Tampa Bay. He never coached for the Phins. He DID coach David Overstreet in high school, but that's the closest connection he has to the Phins.

You are right Montequi, I had him confused with Kippy Brown! But I did uncover another ex-Dolphins guy. Jason Garrett HC of the Cowboys.

Ahh, yes. Garrett. There's been talk about him getting fired at the end of the season.

Turner didn't do very well as an OC here...so I question whether he really IS that good a coach...at any position. When he was with the Cowboys, he had amazing talent to work with. Otherwise, I didn't think their offense was that special, but when you have future HoFers at QB, RB, and WR...you probably have a great offense! The same could be said for Wanny, btw.

Three reasons for our coaching follies.

1.) Lack of talent. Lets face it NO COACH could have had a winning record with some of our teams. But this is the least of the issues.

2.) Since Wanny we have steadfastly refused to hire a coach with actual NFL head coaching experience.

3.) THE BIG ONE IMO. EVERYONE we have brought in since Shula has been a rigid 'System' guy who can't adapt to their competition OR their own teams strengths/talents. Just because you had a all world running attack in Dallas or a defensive powerhouse in Chicago or a Smashmouth ball control team in NY doesn't mean you just decide to do that in Miami and it happens. You just can't coach that way in today's NFL and be long term successful.

Best Coach we had in the last 2 decades was Jimmy Johnson. he had us on the right Track and gave us a KILLER defense.

I really liked Jason Garrett the 2005 QB coach. I was convinced he was going to be an elite head coach. confused smiley

I like what I have seen of Philbin. He has made some mistakes sure but he is the kind of guy that learns from them. he gets fired up too. Man he was pissed at some ref calls this past season. I like our whole staff. We just need some better players on both sides of the ball.

Jimmy Johnson could build a defense no doubt about that. And he could do it without spending high draft picks. He proved that because he did it here AND in Dallas. A better eye for defensive talent may have never existed.

But IMO he plain old got lucky in Dallas. WHO thought EMit Smith would become the NFL's all time leading rusher? Don't think he would have had the same success there had Emmit Smith turned out to be a Karim Abdul-Jabbar.

Jimmy Johnson was clearly the best coach since Shula. The problem with Jimmy is that he sold the owner a bill of goods with Wanny. Had Jimmy stayed, I think he would have made the right choice at QB, avoided Ricky Williams, and likely had this team beating up on the Patriots every year.

I also liked where Saban had the team going. Too bad he was such a schmuck.

Gotta agree with you there. The Wanny thing hurt, but it was Hiezenga that gave him the extention after 2-3 yrs of his mess and the #1 worst draft pick of all time: Eddie Moore in 2003. eye rolling smiley

That started the downward sprial.

I think JJ was the best GM we have had in the last 2 decades, his coaching was short lived but his couple years of personel moves were around for over a decade..

Which really makes you wonder how Mularkey got another HC job!
