Exactly. Plus if you draft one in the bottom of the first round you can afford to do other things. Long was the highest paid lineman at the time he was the first overall.
Paying a #25 pick is hell of a lot cheaper than resigning Long or any other FA LT. Riley Reiff signed a 4 year 8 mil deal and was chosen at 23.
I really don't understand why people are so attached to Hartline, he can't get open versus quality corners, his hands are average at best, he's not a speedy game breaker, he's not a big or muscular target that can break tackles, he's got very little side to side or change of direction speed. He's crummy in the redzone. Seriously, what in the world do you like about him?

Game of his career this one, the one where he was "discovered".

He's disappeared again, is he injured? Nope. Just not that good.
To answer your first question....Because he would be a great #2 WR. Only half the teams in the league have a shut down corner. Most teams do not have two. He is playing against the number 1 CB and they can roll coverage to his side because he is the ONLY threat we have. He's going to get over 1k yards this year. Most likely over 1200.
I don't understand why some people are so down on him. Everyone complains that our players have to step up. Well, he is one of the few that have. He plays above his ability and doesn't drop balls. He is now coming into his own and now you want to get rid of him? That just means we have to add a stud #1 AND a number 2. We have too many needs on this team to start all over in looking for a quality WR.
You are right about one thing. He has disappeared at times. I think the coaches have to take some blame for this as well. He runs the same routes and teams have figured out that if they shut down those routes, we don't have any other answers. I have heard several former pros say this about Miami.
That being said, you may be expecting too much from Hartline. You can look at some of the great WR's in the league and even they don't have big games every week.
Andre Johnson has had a 35 yard game (vs Chi) and a 21 yard game (vs Jax) with no td's. He also was shut down by the Jets with a 15 yard game.
Calvin Johnson has games of 54, 34 and 46 with no td's. Does this make him any less valuable?
We need to stockpile productive players, not get rid of them. He has made some big plays this year. One of the very few.
Do you know how many 1000 yard receivers Miami has had? Like 7 or something like that... in 46 years!
I looked it up. It was Jamar Fletcher that we took with the number 26 pick in the first round in 2001 and Brees was the first person taken in the 2nd round by the Chargers. Of course, since he was from Purdue, I was yelling that we should take him.

Good read.
But I think if we had 4 other guys like Hartline we'd be in good shape. We just don't.
Hartline can be for us what Jordy Nelson is for Green Bay. A big play WR when he's one on one with your 3rd CB all day...or a guy who can get shut out when he has to deal with an elite CB or double coverage.
I am not sold on Jennings, Wallace or Bowe as FA's. Wallace and Bowe come at a high price and Jennings is on the decline. I may sign GJ for a cheaper contract to be a 2 or 3 but I wouldn't depend on him being a #1 WR or deep threat anymore.
Wallace may not be a good fit in this offense since he is known to be a one trick pony and only runs deep routes with questionable hands.
I don't like Bowe.
I think Welker may do wonders for Tannehill due to his experience, work ethic and attitude. He is a great slot guy who knows how to get open and make plays even in dump off situations. He is going to cost around 8 mil though which is high for a player of his age. If possible, I would structure a 3 year contract that could be dumped (with minimal cap hit) at a later date if he declines due to age.
$47,000,000 in cap space
Free Agency:
Wes Welker 8m (weaken NE)
Andy Levitre, 5m (weaken Buf)
Brian Hartline 4m
Jairus Byrd 6m (weaken Buf)
Randy Starks 5m
Dustin Keller 3 mil (weaken Jets)
16m cap remaining.
2013 draft: Time for some wheelin and dealin
Trade #12 to Rams for 1-16 and 3-78. Trade 2-42 & 3-78 to Colts for 1-24.
1-16 Terrance Williams, WR
1-24 Tyler Eifert, TE
2-54 Logan Ryan, CB
3-77 Margus Hunt, DE
3-82 Ryan Swope, WR
4-108 Brennan Williams, RT
6.5m rookie salary pool
Release Richard Marshall to save 5.35 mil on cap leaving....
14.85m cap remaining to sign competition players and fil out squad...maybe get a vet RT and or CB so we don't have to pay Patterson 4.6 mil.
It was an added bonus. Not the reason. The player are legit and noticeable upgrades over the players we have. Two are PB material. Thanks for the input.
