Two mistakes with Bess.

1. Everybody and his brother knows Bess DOES NOT HAVE DEEP SPEED. Why do we throw deep balls to him late in the game? His forte is obviously those short-medium routes that he runs against linebackers, then gets out of bounds. Excellent ability on those. Hartline isn't too fast either, but he's faster than Bess and can get open while covered by dbacks. Rishard Mathews had a couple steps on an earlier route when he got intefered with. He's at least got the speed to stretch the defense. To use Bess in that situation was a mistake.
2. Why did we have Bess in there to return punts when Thigpen is by far a more dynamic returner? For his sure hands? Thigpen hasn't shown any problems handling kicks or punts, and he has speed. At that point in the game, it was worth the risk in order to make something happen.
To use Bess over Thigpen in that situation was a mistake.

I've been saying all year that it doesn't make sense to have Bess returning punts. I understand the argument that he has better hands, live ball, etc.
Thigpen hasn't had a problem with catching the ball! All he's done is return a kickoff and a punt in the same season. The guys electric and can run. Which brings me to another point...Why doesn't he get any playing time on offense? If he can make people miss on returns, it stands to reason that he may be able to make people miss out of the backfield as well. Did I mention that he can run? Teach him to run a few routes, either out of the backfield or lined up in the slot! Get some people on the field that can make something happen.
I'm getting really frustrated with this coaching staff. Get the few playmakers we DO have on the field and give us a chance to win.

Chren the whole poit of that post was to say nolan carrol $uCKS...
You obviously don't recognize irony and sarcasm and puns when you see them, SamSam. Think about it a little more and if you get it, you might find it funny.
Bess should be a number 3 slot guy. That's it. Quick slants and screens like Welker runs.
Hartline is a fine number 2.
They throw it to Bess deep because both Hartline and Bess have been elevated to 1 & 2....because we don't have a true number 1.
I don't understand the theory of inserting Bess at PR either. Thigpen has never shown any propensity for dropping punts. He looks pretty sure handed to me. This was a stupid move. The guy has already ran a KR and a PR back for a TD. Keep the guy in the game.
