The Official Wide Reciever Thread....
Posted by: Aqua&Orange ()
Date: January 05, 2009 07:51AM

Alright, since all we are getting are earaches from everybody screaming how bad we need a #1 Wide Reciever, lets break down this position and see who truly will be available for us this offseason. I will post what I know and I *HIGHLY* encourage everybody else to help. smiling smiley

1. Michael Crabtree- Will be looooong gone before we pick.
2. TJ Whosyomomma- Will he be a Free Agent? Isnt he 32 years old?
3. Derrius Heyward-Bey- He might be available when we pick...Is he what we are looking for?

Please, throw out some other names.....

I think Heyward-Bey will be a reach for someone because of his size and 40 time (4.33). Macklin will be gone. Harvin is too small and will be gone. Our only hope may be players like....

Brian Robiskie, Kenny Britt, Louis Murphy or Juaquin Iglesias.

Derrick Williams is intriguing at 6' 200 lbs and 4.39 40.

Mohamed Massaquoi is another @ 6'2 205 4.45 and was hot to end the season. He had 112 yards vs Florida, 191 & 1 TD vs Kentucky & 180 yards & 3 TD's vs Georgia Tech. On the flip side he had only 1 reception in the Capitol One Bowl victory vs Michigan State. Stafford threw for 3 TD's in the game so MM was probably doubled all day...i didn't watch it.

After all the Ginn bashing, I feel I must point this out again...

Rookie Year...

On Offense
Steve Smith 10 receptions 151 yards - 0 TD's
Ted Ginn 34 receptions 420 yards - 2 TD's

2nd year...
Steve Smith 54 receptions 872 yards - 3 TD's
Ted Ginn 56 receptions 790 yards - 4 TD's

Total thru year 2
Smith 64 rec - 1,023 yards - 3 Td's
Ginn 90 rec - 1,210 yards - 6 Td's

3rd year...
Steve Smith 88 receptions 1,110 yards - 7 TD's
projected...
Ted Ginn 91 receptions 1,209 yards - 10 Td's

Can we just give the guy one more year before the trade talks please?

Can I just say this?

If someone is willing to give us a high 1st rounder for Ginn, I say we take it and run!!

There odds favor Ginn improving way more than someone giving a high draft pick for a player that has been labeled and underachiever.

That's too big an "IF".

Ginn won't be traded and we won't use a high draft choise for a WR. We will most likely use a later round choise and develope what we have.

All that will work if we improve our OL again. It has been much better this year, but improvement is needed. We absolutly HAVE to get a consistant running game going. We have the backs but they need holes. That will help the passing game and put us in control.

Then we need to imporve the pass rush game a bunch.

Who will be available in FA cause I don't see us drafting a stud pass rusher?

Very true. Both are great NFL prospects. maybe we can pick Tate up in the late rounds due to his injury.

Mohammed Massoqui sucks and the only reason why he had a few good games this season is because Georgia has a phenomenal freshman in AJ Green who commanded the double coverage and allowed MM to get singled on every single play.

Kenny Britt from Rutgers. I've got a really good feeling about this guy. He's not flashy, and he's not the fastest. But, he's big, tough, and catches the ball.

Bess, Camarillo, and Ginn will probably stay. They need to add one more guy. Too early to say who that could be via the draft...Dan Pompeii thinks it will be Harvin. We'll see.

I think Ginn is going to light things up as a 2nd receiver, we just need a 1st receiver. Getting rid of Ginn would be a huge mistake. He is the reincarnation of Wes Welker.

We need to find a Randy Moss now.

I like Mohamed Massaquoi, he looked great against great defenses. Physical player, good speed.

Comparing a #9 pick to an undrafted FA? Wes is a #3 receiver for NE. If THIS is your argument, then Ginn definitely IS a bust!

Great...another small WR...just what we need.

Ginn 5'11 180
Bess 5'10 190
Camarillo 6'1 190
Harvey 5'11 190

Percy is often compared to none other than... Ted Ginn Jr.

Good thing Dan Pompeii knows no more than anyone else outide the organization.

This is one of the most confusing things I have ever read in my life. First of all no matter where they get picked they need to perform.

Wes Welker was a pro bowler, I would hope *ANY* of our guys get their no matter where drafted.

Also, I guess we shouldnt compare Ted Ginn to Rod Smith who is going to be a hall of famer because Smith was undrafted.

My argument has been, all along, that a guy drafted as high as Ginn who is making the salary he's making should perform up to a high level and EARN his salary. If not, he either should take a paycut or go. Sometimes a high salary goes to a guy's head and he never reaches is potential. Haven't you noticed how guys like Welker, Camarillo, and Bess seemed MUCH more hungry and determined than Ginn? Of course. Ginn was a 1st-round pick. He's pretty much guaranteed a roster spot even if he stinks. Those other 3 guys had to work hard to make our roster. I wish Ginn would work that hard. If he did, I'm sure he'd be one of the top receivers in the league. Unfortunately, we can't do anything about his work ethic or attitude. Heck...Ryan Leaf was, physically, a prototypical QB...but he was a waste of space in the NFL.

How do you know he hasnt worked that hard? You were with him training last offseason?

I'm with Leon. We upgrade the OL, and the guys there learn and gel better, and we improve in every area. We establish the run. Play action becomes more effective. Defenses have to watch the run more, opening up the passing game, and Pennington doesn't get harassed or pressured as much.

Sure, we could use a better receiver, but I say the OL is where we should be concentrating.

If he had we would have seen him catch more passes. Fact is, Camarillo was our leading WR when he got injured. Bess would have passed Ginn if receptions if not for having to play behind Camarillo most of the year. And Welker...do I have to go on? If Ginn really WAS working that hard, then he's not good enough!!! Remember all the hype about how hard Beck was studying last year? Lots of good THAT did him.

Seriously, how many games did Ginn lead the team in receiving yards or even receptions? ONE?

Ginn is Michael Irvin's Alvin Harper. We just need a Michael Irvin...minus the coacaine problem. He needs someone opposite him to draw double coverage. I also think not having a veteran WR next to him to be a mentor has slowed his progress.

Guys ginn just needs another top receiver to compliment him. He will be fine. We just need to find somebody else for the other side. Bess and Camarillo will work the slot.

I like the idea of throwing some money at Anquan Boldin in FA. He is proven, and we could sign him to at least a 3 year deal.

Another guy I was pretty impressed with this year is Gilyard from Cinnci. He looked pretty damn good against a good 'D' in the orange bowl

Cammarillo was our leading reciever because he runs short routes and has a weaker armed QB who throws very accurate short passes and horrible deep ball passes. Sounds like if we had a deep threat he wouldnt get much passes.....oh, wait.....eye rolling smiley
