glad to see a deal get done... lets hope he continues his dominance as a pass rusher!

Agree, but I think we can do that during the season, Long has a hefty bank account so he should have more patience with getting his new deal.

great move. I really like it seems we are being proactive. I think this makes it less likely we extend long---no need to really, since we can see if he makes it thru the season healthy and if so franchise him, if not, let him walk or sign him to a smaller deal

While I agree it is alot of money, our best player on defense deserves to get paid that type of money. I like paying guys that actually had their success in a Dolphins uniform. Our problems is paying guys that type of money that havent shown their value in a Dolphins uniform.

I think a 4 year deal was a reasonable compromise from both sides, player and FO. Doesnt a 4 year deal mean he will be more 34 going on 35 when the contract ends? Then 36?

I read where it was a 4 year extension.
That would imply that we have him this year on the cheap before the 4 year extension kicks in.
Wouldn't surprise me to see that its a back loaded deal as far as annual salary goes.
You prorate the $20m guarantee over 5 years instead of just the 4 from the extension.
So this year he's only counting for $4.5-$5m
The last year could be a huge number that he'll never see.
Good for Wake.
He certainly deserves it.
Just goes to show that all that hubub a few weeks back over his "holdout" was reactionary nonsense.

Yup Jim its a 4 year extension so it translates to a $50M/5year deal, more or less.
There are more than a few ways to juggle the cap hit so it impacts different years.
Will be interesting to see if the front loaded it or back loaded it.

I don't think we have to make any moves to make it happen now.
As a rough guestimate...we were 6-7 mill or more under the cap going into the draft.
Its quite possible that Wake's Cap number this year is just the prorated portion of his $20 mill guarantee and the $695k he was set to make this year.
That would be less than $5mill against the cap this year, so we should be good...at least until we want to sign Tannehill and Martin. Then we are going to have to restructure someone or make a move or two.
Its a great deal and a great signing. Now someone go tell that idiot James Walker at the AFC East blog. He doesn't understand the word extension apparently.
Now all we gotta do is find another legitimate pass rusher to plug in opposite of him on the other side of the D-line to pull some of those constant double teams off of him and open him up a little for some opportunities to rush the passer in 1 on 1 situations, so he can go back to dominating again.

We got alot of pressure last year on the interior, when our big line was in. Starks, Mcdaniels SOlia, Odrick and different versions of that with ex players Merling and Langford... The oline has to double on the inside, when you bring that much power and size besides the fact you make a mess of the passing lanes for the QB.... We need the pass rusher to replace Taylor for sure, or we need to use more of those 4 man fronts with size and power...

Agree ... and Crowder, I think you're softening on Ireland ... he deserve's a smidgeon of after all the bashing he took pre-draft.
As for timing on wake, it needed to happen after he knew the score on the draft also ...It's still early, but let's hope the picks all pan out nicely. I feel pretty good about what He's done so far this off season.
Jim, I have no problem giving credit when it is due. But I try to be honest about it when I think they make a mistake. People want to paste me that I have always been an Ireland basher, i have not... There is plenty of me giving prasie to Ireland in the past. I dont like excuses, he has been our GM for four years/5 drafts. While maybe Parcells had influence, Ireland was the GM.
I am not a negative Dolphins fan, ask Berk or others I support the team and look for the good. But I can not ignore the bad and believe it is good to leave it unsaid when people dont handle things properly. As far as pre-draft. I cant make a call about this draft right now...I think it is foolish to get over excited or overly negative at this point... Nobobody knows and every team feels good about their choices....We shall see.

I do love our Dline and think Ireland has done a great job putting it together... Solia, Starks, and Wake, became great on this team and became dominate under Ireland as our GM.
