I noticed on "Hard knocks" that Jared Odrick was addressing the team before the game. I really liked that and thought he would make a much better leader than Dansby. He seems to be an exemplary model for the type of player Philbin and Ireland want on this team. He is, first off, very talented, strong, athletic and a football player. However, he also has great character, intelligence, articulateness, dedication, intensity and is funny, well-liked and respected by his teammates. It seems to me that Dansby claims the role simply by being outspoken.

Dansby is the guy communicating with the sidelines, like the QB of the defense. He is the guy who calls the play and gets everyone lined up... His position is a natural leadership position for the defense... I do like Odrick, smart, tough guy, but he is still a little green. Last year was for all but one game, his first year playing the game...If he keeps up his play from last year, then I think he will continue to step up in the leadership role... Dansby will be gone probably after this year, because we will have paid him all of his guaranteed money, and his cost is very high... Unless he goes to the probowl this year, I imagine MLB will be an early draft pick...

Good point. I get it that he has to direct the defensive calls, but I don't think he needs to be the guy in the locker room is my point. Maybe he wasn't on the field all the time, but it is his third year after playing four in college and being a team captain at Penn State. With his characteristics, I think he is more than ready and it looks to me that he is making the effort to take that role.

I think the most important part of being a leader in the locker room 99% of the time, is play on the field and leadership on the field... I think Odrick is a natural leader, but he still has some proving to do, to the others around him... Last year was a good start..

This team needs leaders on the field. Odrick can talk all he wants, but his numbers were disappointing last year. I could car less if he addresses the team, I want the first round pick to play like a first round pick.

Really DolfanKing? I thought Odrick played well considering it was basically his rookie year. He was inconsistent but had 6 sacks and some nice plays against the run. He wasn't disappointing, what would be disappointing is if he doesn't continue improving.

His numbers were disappointing? I think you have to look closer. Langford was starting in front of him and he was rotating in the lineup.

6 sacks in limited play is pretty good. More than any other lineman last year even if they were starters.

Odrick is my pick for breakout player. Him and Sean Smith.

For a first round pick, for a leadership role, his numbers were very average.

If he were a second round pick and a role player, I might agree. But we are looking at a first rounder who is now in his third year and he only has produced 6 sacks.

I'm not bagging on the guy, but he really isn't performing to the level he should. The fact that an under-performer is being considered a leader doesn't send a good message to the team.

6 sacks is a lot from a 3-4 DE. Their primary job is run defense. Odrick actually tied for 7th in the league for sacks by a 3-4 DE last year. And he had at least 100 fewer snaps than any of the 6 guys ahead of him.

Not true. The NT's primary job is run defense. The DE opposite the Sam LB should be a good pass rusher.

Odrick has been average.

Not in a 3-4. That's why 3-4 DEs are 290-300 lbs. they are run stuffers. Any pass rush is a bonus. Only 6 3-4 DEs had more sacks than Odrick last year.

dolfanmark is correct. 3-4 DEs are more like DTs in a 4-3. Tie up the O-linemen to let the linebackers make the plays on passing downs, and stuff the run. Odrick only played ~1/2 the snaps, so 6 sacks is especially impressive. He is more suited to a 4-3 DE position, so I think this year will be a breakout year for him.

Well, not my first post. I've been on this board for over 10 years. I used to post as dolfans1, but since there is also a dolfan1 (who joined well after me) who is somewhat "controversial," I changed my name. Thanks, anyway. I don't post much, but I've been a Phin fan for almost 40 years (my God how time flies!), and I'm an optimist tempered by realism (at least when it comes to football).
