Watching the playoffs last weekend the game just didn't seem the same to me anymore. With all the new different supersensitive hitting penalties added over the last couple of seasons, the new kickoff rules, and the inflated QB numbers. For some reason it all compounded this last weekend. I felt like I was watching arena league football or something. It was a different game to me.

I miss tough defensive play( hard hits), game changing kickoff returns, and qb's who had to earn thier numbers.

What do you guys think of the game today?

Do you think they will ever change things back?

No, conservative, defensively strong, ball control football is gone...high flying, fast paced, high scoring is the new game. The game will only get faster and faster.

This is the very reason why everybody hated the National Championship game.

If that game happened 30 years ago, people would be talking about it being one of the greatest defensive displays in the history of college sports....but people are only talking about it being a dud.


Nobody wants to see shutdown defense anymore, or should I say build your team around that.

I think this point is overblown a bit. Out of the eight teams playing this weekend, 3 of them are there because of their defenses and strong running games, Ravens, 49ers and Broncos with the Giants being on the fringe of that list. Not to mention the Steelers being in the super bowl last year, and they are traditionally a run oriented strong def type of team (I realize that's changed a bit since Bens showed up, but that's still how their team is built)

I did not particularly enjoy the BCS game, and I'm happy with where the NFL is at right now.

I like hard hitting defense...but I also like scoring too. The rules just don't allow for physical hard nosed defensive play anymore. Shame because I agree the game has lost something with the shift.

One mitigating factor is the size, strength, and speed of the players now compared to even 10 years ago. You can't have guys lke James Harrison headhunting unless you want to watch 2nd/3rd string QBs play

LOL, Im not sure. I like some old rules and some of the new rules. I need to think about it.

But, I would much rather watch the Stanford vs. Ok. st. game, then watch LSU vs. Alabama game.

I don't know all positions are bigger,faster,stronger so it should balance.

The weird thing about the NFL back then was the game was much more violent but QBS seemed to survive it.(Marino, Montana, Elway,Kelly etc. seemed to play in alot of games)

I honestly prefer the old hard-Hitting Defensive oriented NFL.

I just had a crazy Idea..maybe do away with most of these nonsense penalties, and as an exchange also transform the equipment padding from the players. Soft or cushion-on-contact padding for offensive players, and less/minimal pads for defensive guys. It might be way to restore a good balance of minimal injuries, exciting plays, and in the meantime reducing all those unfair and game changing stoppages for "illegal hits".

Either that, or better trained officials. The officiating is one thing I have noticed a serious decline in quality over the years.

Id say the ravens are a balanced team. Their D isn't as good as it usually is but their passing game and running games are better.

49ers are definitely defensive oriented.

The Broncos are balanced as well I'm no Tebow acolyte but they don't make the playoff without him let alone win in the 1st round.

The Giants don't win 4 games without Eli Manning. Their defense was a sieve for 3/4 of the season and they had the worst running attack in the league statistically. Manning threw for nearly 5,000 yards and was one of the top 5 QB's in the sport this year.

The only thing I disagree about in your assessment is the kickoff rule. The new kickoff rule is really the Old kickoff rule. Pretty much all the other changes you mention, wuss the game up for me a little bit too much.

Sure I like a fast paced game, but when the rules enable someone like Tom Brady to be more feminine than his supermodel wife, something is wrong. Also, my favorite player of all time is Larry Csonka. I used to say 'there'll never be another Csonka' but now it's true for the wrong reason--they all but eliminated the fullback position from the game.

IMHO: This once was a league where you could watch teams muscle each other and really show "football" skills, now it is a hollywood league that plays too much pitch and catch.

It will never go back, for bad or worse. Money is the driver of all things.

You got me on the Giants *Artist formerly known as Phinsfan2*, but i'm not conceding the other 3, Denver, 49ers and Ravens rank 31st, 29th and 19th respectively in passing offense. I'm not arguing it's not a passing league these days, i'm just saying it's a little overblown at times.

Well wait a minute, if Denver ranks low in BOTH offensive and defensive categorys.......how in the hell can they be this far along in the playoffs......could it be?
