that was awesome.
I am very impressed with philbin's smarts and I think he will be a good coach. only concern with him is he really doesn't seem to command fear in the players, when he was chastising 85 he was kind of looking away from him and almost apologizing for what he was saying. Anyone else get that sense?

He knew there were 6 Cameras on him........he was choosing his words trying not to come off like a dick on National Cable. Garantee he got the message.
If your players respect you then sometimes there's no need to be a dick. He was yelling and getting on players all through practice. Just gotta know when to do it and when not to, who you can yell at and who ya don't.
I agree that Philbin should have been more assertive in what he was saying. I like what he said about the F bomb having an impact, but not if every next word is one though.
I am more interested in how Vontae Davis responds to this whole ordeal. Remember the coaches got to screen this ahead of time. I wonder if the "I'm a act" thing exposed him a little more and perhaps influenced their depth chart. If Vontae is smart, then he will make sure he starts putting in a little extra work. Personally, I think that was very embarrasing for him.

Now that will steer some commotion from some members of this board that shall remain nameless.

I think he handled it alright.. He didnt want to call out Chad, but wanted to address it. All the f bombs were a little foolish, but at the same time he didnt want to kill Chads spirit... He isnt the type of "dictator fear me" coach, which is one of the reasons I actually like him.... He seems more of a coach that wants his players to respect him and be comfortable with him, not fear him....He was uncomfortable addressing it, but knew it had to be done... Same way he handled it when he basicly told Chad to leave the coach's meeting... There are many philosophies to leadership, Philbins approach isnt a bad one if he can keep control, just unique to the NFL..

He handled it just fine. He is not weak. He got all over Davis for making excuses to go to the bathroom (just so he could catch his breat) and eventually benched him. There is more than one way to skin a cat.
I would love to see CamMoron in action. My only fear is that Philbin is too much like Cameron---but while I used to cringe at the things Cameron said (fail forward fast, etc), Philbin comes off as very smart. Just perhaps not as assertive as you'd expect an NFL coach to be, but what do I know...

I have no problem with the way Coach Philbin conducted himself, addressed the players, or his approach to discipline (specifically how he confronted Chad and the like)
Actually, he reminds me of another coach who seemed to carry himself the same way, Tony Dungy. And he did alright if I remember correctly. Smart, cerebral, not a blow hard ala rex ryan or overly loud or screaming like a military disciplinarian. He has a lot of similarities to Tony Dungy's style and Dungy's style worked very well for him. He had no problem getting respect, even back to his days in Tampa.
I also disagree with some of the comments some here have made about how they thought he was indirect with Chad Johnson when talking to him about the cursing, saying that he wouldn't look him in the eye. I didn't see that at all. They were both sort of looking forward at the action on the field during the talk, but Coach Philbin turned directly towards Chad and looked him in the eye a number of times throughout the conversation. I didn't think he came across as weak or timid at all.
I like his approach and I hope it continues to work. The players already seem to be responding favorably to his style and his whole approach to everything so far and that has come out in several interviews with guys speaking positively about the way Philbin talks to them and does things and the whole culture they have cultivated with this team. I hope it continues.
1. I am pulling for Les Brown, but Wow...may be the worst blocker I have ever seen in my life. I realize all his lack. I do. But, wow. Its kind of funny how bad he was.
2. Philbin was the star. He looked in command, to me. He ran the practice well. He definately seemed like the General.
3. Mike Pouncey was willing to fight Randall Kheeston in the locker room....LOL.
they didn't bring in gerrard and draft tannehill just so they could start moore again. if the coaches thought gerrard outplayed MM in practice (and by all accounts he has) there should be zero problem starting DG. and it's just the first preseason game anyway....
