Definitely a different era type of thing.

The rules, and the game have changed to the point that yeah, it's very likely that Griese may not have been as successful if he had to throw that often.

Naw, PF2, the apocalypse is over. I was a freshman in Griese's Senior year at Purdue. He was a prolific passer. What happened was that when you have the horses he had with the Dolphins, you don't HAVE to pass as much. Didn't mean that he could not have put the team on his back with his passing if he HAD TO.

You young guys today are so wrapped up in the passing game that you fail to realize that the old adage was that "when you pass three things can happen and two of them are bad." You guys think that you must pass whether you have to or not and if you don't that's a sign something is wrong with you.

Now, Lamonica passed because he had to. Joe Willy passed because he had to. Terry didn't have to as much but he could have if he HAD to. But still the rule was that you didn't live by the pass unless you had to.

Hey, Griese wasn't drafted #4 overall because he was good at handing off the ball

Correct. And he wasn't second in the Heisman voting because he was good at handing off the ball.

If he had a team around him, maybe. He'd probably do very well in a WC type system.

1977, at the height of the Deadball era. Griese threw 22 TDs, and averaged 7.3 yds per att. He rated at 87.8, when the league rated at 60.7.

In context of era, Bob had one of the greatest passing seasons in the history of the league.

And hopefully Earl counts too. At least?

He counts in my book! I mean he was team MVP in 1972 winning a majority of the games during the undefeated season., despite Griese playing in the actual super bowl game.

And Earl did win a super bowl....as a Baltimore Colt.

Who will be the next? SOMEBODY PLEASE.

I think its a good point....griese might have not been that good or a HOF if he had to throw it many more times...

I think its just a matter of destiny.

Imagine if marino played his entire career with the 49ers and montana with the phins...

Just think about it for a second.

I hope at a minimum the next MIA QB to win a SB has at least been born by now

My guess is that if Bob Griese were playing today, he’d be a top five-to-seven QB.

Very accurate, with great touch, superb ability to read defenses, mobile, ability to elude defenders, excellent instincts and intuition, had a “feel” for the game that went way beyond the playbook (which, for the most part, is un-coachable).

Griese played against the best defenses in modern NFL history, BEFORE the rule changes instituted in 1978 that ushered in today’s passing games.

The guy was repeatedly a pro bowl selection; he led the Dolphins to THREE STRAIGHT SBs, he’s in BOTH the Pro Football and College Football Halls of Fame.

Griese could do everything Drew Brees does now.

If he had a good team around him, he’d be difficult as hell to defend, if he had a great team around him, he’d probably win SBs and stuff, and be in the HofF.

you're right....I do remember those years. Just think if he didn't injure his throwing shoulder, he might have had a couple more good years left... just think if we had Griese starting in the SB instead of Woodley. Damn.

I think so. Bob was IMO the original Joe Cool. And let no one fool you, Griese had a cannon of an arm, watch some of the old films.

I sometimes wonder what it would be like to see today's pampered millionaire babies go back and have to live, train, eat, etc like guys did back then. Moreover I would like to see Brady play by the rules Bob did. Let them hit him 3 seconds after releasing the ball, 5 yards out of bounds, in the knees, let the DB's maul his receivers, horse collar and face mask him. Or better yet let's break his leg and ankle in game 5 and see him start in the super bowl smileys with beer

I wonder that quite often. I grew up watching (and yes, worshipping) a roster full of Dolphins who played with metal rods in their arm, broken noses, etc. And as you said, the rules were different on the field. Under the same conditions, I'd like to say that they'd beat today's players, but the truth is today's guys would just quit and go home without even playing.
