I think Mathews has a shot, and I am still waiting to see Gates start to play better before preseason is over with... Also both Gates and Mathews, return kicks and punts.
I am not sure who is gonna make it, I think it will go right up until the end of preseason before the WR battles are decided...

Supposedly, Gates has been doing a good job. He has gotten open deep, but the ball just hasn't gotten to him.

Miami desperately needs his speed. I hope he makes it and plays well.

i think we sign edwards and keep him over nenee. both are older vets but edwards has more upside. we will probably sign him after seeing a bit more from the guys currently in camp.
as for wallace vs pruitt, from what I've heard wallace has been the more impressive. I think we keep one of them but not both. I do think one of them has the chance to be very good, and I think it will be wallace.
i also think one of the late round rookies or fuller makes it. probably fuller because of his experience with RT.
And from what I hear, Gates has been really bad. He's got sprinter speed but can't run routes and pick up the offense. All that speed is useless if you can't get open. I don't see him making it unless he really picks it up. He is no longer needed on KR with Lamar MIller.

Its way too early to do anything more than just guess which WR's make the team. There's just too much to speculate about. too many variables that can and will change.


If you believe everything that's been written in the last 4 days:

Chad Johnson is our best WR.

Bess has been open the whole off season.

Naanee has been better than solid.

Hartline is a lock for the roster despite missing time.

Pruitt is our 2nd fastest WR and the guy turning the most heads this off-season and a valuable special teamer.

Wallace has been just as impressive as Pruitt.

Gates was lost in OTA but has been getting open at will since camp opened despite not getting the ball.

Fuller looks like a keeper. Seems he's more like what you saw from him as a junior instead of as a senior.


That's 8 guys...presuming that Braylon Edwards won't be signed unless we are decimated by injuries and we don't end up trading for Mike Wallace.


So which two do you get rid of?

I think Naanee gets cut. He's going to be our 4th guy. I'd rather have a guy with upside in that spot.

We could trade Hartline or Bess and open up a spot, they do have the most trade value, but I doubt it.

The only guy who is eligible for the practice squad is Fuller so that's a possibility. Especially if he has a quiet summer. But if he plays well we'll probably lose him.

We could put Wallace and/or Pruitt on IR.

I suspect we end up with either this:

Johnson
Hartline
Bess
Wallace
Pruitt
Fuller
With Gates on IR.

or

Johnson
Hartline
Bess
Wallace
Pruitt
Gates
With Fuller on the practice squad.

Provided they all show something this summer I'd have no problems dealing Hartline or Bess for the right offer. But chances are someone will play themselves off the roster so that won't be necessary.

It is certainly going to be interesting to see how it plays out.

we're in no position to be trading WRs. we have arguably the worst WRs in the league---anyone another team thinks is worth trading for is someone we need to keep. probably couldn't get even a 4th for our best guy anyway

I couldn't even guess at this point. a lot can happen in the next month.

Look at the surprises in the past from Hartline and Bess. Pruitt is going into his 4th year and Wallace into his 3rd year.

Pruitt was a great gunner last year.

Wallace played in the WCO at SD State.

I am still rooting for Gates. His speed is ridiculous.

Then you have Marlon Moore, Jeff Fuller, BJ Cunningham and Rishard Mathews. The last 3 being eligible for the PS correct?

Mathews was a projected 3-4th rounder and Fuller may have been a first at some point. BJ was at one time a 3rd round prospect.

Least experienced...absolutely.

But that's not the issue.

Trading a WR now would've silly, unless you were getting one back who was better.

But fast forward a month. Let's say you have 8 guys you like. Pruitt and Wallace both make the jump that many 3rd year wr's do in the nfl and Wallace starts making strides.

Are you going to cut someone or are you going to trade them to get down to 6?

off the top of my head, I can't think of a worse WR squad in the league, at least based on past production. maybe cleveland or the rams?

truth, which WR that could not make this team (i.e., our 7th best WR) do you think could fetch even a 7th round pick in a trade?

Right now?

Nobody. Maybe gates if someone was high on him in the draft.

But i'm not talking about now.

All we have now are encouraging reports. Chances are that someone will falter when we start playing other teams orzo done will get hurt and resolve the numbers issues on their own.

All I was saying was that if by some miracle we got to final cuts and we had 8 healthy wr's who all had played well this pre season then I wouldn't be opposed to dealing hartline or bess. They'd have the most value.

I hate cutting players with upside that are starting to show they belong.

Like I said...it's all a bunch of wasted breath discussing it. It will likely sort itself out.

10 days and we'll get a glance at how effective they will be....or not be.

We definitely have some talent there so it's not like we're going in with a bunch of plodding slow or washed up receivers like Marty Booker, Greg Camarillo, Dedrick Ward, Derek Hagan, James McKnight, Derrius Thompson, Brian Gilmore, David Boston etc.

We have been there before and kept waiting and waiting for Chris Chambers to become that franchise receiver.

Every one of our top guys are fast. They all have good size except Bess. They are all young except Johnson. Most are going into years where WR's turn the corner. Wallace, Pruitt, Moore, Hartline.

Some have a chip on their shoulder with something to prove for being overlooked. Chad Johnson, Fuller, Cunningham & Mathews.

I would rather go into the season with the guys that are physically skilled, motivated and only a good QB away from succeeding than a bunch of small, slow and over the hill guys.

We may be the worst in production but I am looking forward to capturing that potential.

Like I said before. Our WR's aren't our only receiving weapons. Bush, Clay, Egnew, Fasano & Miller will help out as well.

Lack of production from young wr's doesn't necessarily mean lack of talent.

Last year we were 22nd in passing but that was Sparano's offense. We only threw the ball 469 times (or 29 x per game) as opposed to a team like Detroit who threw it 666 times. N.O. 662. Green Bay 552.

Obviously they had more efficient QB's with more time in those systems.

We were still ranked 13th in yards per reception but we were 11th in rushing with 469 attempts. That was more of Sparano's old school philosophy.

Green Bay was ranked 27th in rushing but they had nowhere near the talent at RB that we have.

Starks for GB had only 29 receptions. Bush had 43.

Not sure what my point is exactly but just some numbers for ya...

I could see Bush getting about 60-70 catches this year. Not neccesarily the dump offs that Starks was getting either since he will also line up outside and in the slot. He had 88, 73 and 52 his first 3 yrs in N.O.

I see an improvement on offense from 22nd in passing to 16th and from 11th in rushing to 9th.

Still have a odd feeling Hartline is moved to Cleveland, they are worse than us, and we have a lot of potential if we have a QB that can get it to them. I like our offensive potential. Fuller is a beast, could have been top 15 pick if he hadn't had injuries. Sherman knows him

fuller dropped a ton of balls last year and was undrafted. a bit early to call him a "beast"

I remember years ago, during training camp, some guy named Oronde Gadsden kept making play after play. Nobody knew who he was then, but it was clear that he would be the real deal. Years later, we heard similar things about Bess and he became productive. At this point, it sounds like the same may be happening for Julius Pruitt. When you factor in his special teams ability, it is hard to imagine he doesn't make the team.

Unfortunately, Hartline has had recent health and injury issues. With a new staff and system coming in, I don't think that bodes well for him. I had high hopes for him, but I am beginning to sense that he isn't long for this team, be it cut or traded. They may even continue to hold him out because he might be our most tradable player and his contract will be up.

By the way, those old reports used to come from Ozzy's Training camp insights. What ever happened to him?

same could be said for Wes Welker. Talk about your overachiever. It happens every year. Victor Cruz, Miles Austin, Jimmy Smith, Shannon Sharp. The list goes on and on.

I have a different worry about HARTLINE, and it's that his injury is more serious than MIAMI's letting on. How does "PUP-Football Injury" work? Because I'm beginning to suspect that HARTLINE might not be ready to play until VERY LATE IN THE GAME.

Interesting that Fuller has outplayed Moore who has been here for awhile. That's a good sign for the rookie.

Looks like a wake up call for Wallace. Step up (consistently) or step out.

Moore could be gone too if we only keep 5 as GB has done for the last 4 or 5 years.
