He risked his life to save a little girl from drowning. I don't what to give up the whole story, though.

A&O is already a hero for serving his country, not surpised to hear about him continuing that honor. Monte, are you friends with him outside phins.com? How do you know about it?

Oh wow, thanks Vic. I just did what anyone else in that situation would do.

I was at the beach in Sullivan's Island, South Carolina and I was too far out as warnings were posted for extreme rip currents. But, being a slight bit of a daredevil I went all the way out to my chin I the ocean and was trying to hide behind the waves to make my wife think I got swept out.

Yes it is dumb, but again, I'm a jokester with a bit of a daredevil side.

Anywho I heard very faint screams for help and I thought it was actually my wife from shore screaming over me.

By I looked out into the ocean and I seen a tiny head bobbing in the water about 50 Feet farther out from me in the ocean. It was a 7 year old girl who had gotten swept out. I swam out and got her and barely survived to tell.

I was pretty sure at one point that she was already dead and that I was going to die too.

I'm not sure how I made it, but I guess I will just stick to the fact that I refused to miss another Dolphins game as the reason for me making it back. And yes, she made it oh fine too.

The scary part is, nobody knew she had gotten swept out. No her family, no other on lookers, nobody.

Had I not been out that far playing a joke on my wife, they would be planning her funeral right now.

Nice work sir! When somebody, a stranger, needed you, you were there for her, that is what life is about and very honorable! THe circumstance doesnt matter, what matters is that you reacted, didnt fear for yourself and saved a young girls life... Cheers my friend, keep up the good work! and give your own little ones a big hug from Dad, the hero.smileys with beer

I read a story a while back about some guy saving a woman from drowning at the beach, and then she promptly turned around and sued him. I guess no good deed goes unpunished.

Good on you though.

Just for the record, as some of you may know, you should never swim against it. It is recommended to swim perpendicular to it until you come out of it. If you see you are advancing to the shore then by all means swim into it, but if it is a stalemate or you are losing ground then swim across it. It has worked for me a couple times in the past, but I wasn't tugging a young girl along with me. Way to go, A&O!

I was in Hawaii some years ago. I found myself too far out from the shore and tired as hell. I could feel the undertow pulling my legs out to sea. The shore was a distant scene. I thought to myself, "The undercurrent goes out to sea but the top goes to the shore. That's what creates the waves." So I laid belly flat on the top of the water, essentially this is known as the dead man's float, and sure enough, the top portion took me toward the shore and ultimately formed itself into a wave. After each wave crested I free-styled swam, four or five strokes and then laid belly-flat again until my body was again taken toward the shore by a cresting wave. I kept repeating this process. I did this about four or five times in all and I was back with the rest of the people near the shore. My present wife chided me for trying to impress the girls on the shore. Funny thing, years earlier I was in Barbadoes in the ocean and as I tried to get out of the water my hand got a sharp needle into it from one of those sea shell-like creatures. At that point, my FIRST wife chided me for trying to show off in front of the girls on that beach.

Swim safely out there folks. Here in Massachusetts we've got great white sharks biting swimmers on Cape Cod.

Lucky for me, I have a personal preventive device to stop me from getting in any trouble while swimming in the ocean up here: it's too FREAKIN' cold! having grown up swimming in Miami Beach's bathtub-warm surf, this freezing water keeps me out of danger.
