Cowboys and Dolphins to trade picks in the 1st?
Posted by: Aqua&Orange ()
Date: April 04, 2011 02:14PM

Reports say that the Cowboys and a "mid-first round team" have a deal in place that if Blaine Gabbert or Cam Newton fall to #9, then the Cowboys and that "team" will trade.

Could that team be our beloved Phins!?

Doubtful, but we would likely give up a pick so not have a second and maybe a third?

Way too much for a project like newton. We can sign Vince young via FA

I doubt gabbert would get past Buffalo, Phoenix but you never know

agreed. without a 2d we don't have the ammo to move up. a trade up in this draft would be a bad move imo.

Sounds like a Possibility. The Dolphins want a Top Tier QB Prospect. if these 2 are gone the Dolphins will Trade up and take their chances in the 2nd round. Think the Boys are interested in Mark Ingram? And don't forget where Saprano and Irlend came from. I like it. It's definitely Possible.

I swear to god if this is us then I am going to be pissed.

Doesnt the Patriots have a middle round pick??

I can see them moving up and selecting a top QB to replace Brady in 2 to 4 year's.

Gabbert to NE seem's about right if it's there, they DEFF got the ammo.

Makes ALOT more sense.

The sports writter is just a idiot, and know's nothing. He wish's we would get Gabbert, or newton and is a ramblin moron.

I'm definately no draft pundit, but to me the only one worth moving up for is Gabbert, and I would think he'd be long gone by 9.

RESPONSE: Even as Henne's top supporter on this board, may I ask how would us getting Gabbert be "moronic?"

Keep in mind that "The Bleacher Report" website is not an actual news site. It's just ordinary people posting speculation.

Using the draft value chart, we'd have to trade our 1st, 3rd, and 4th rd picks to Dallas to move from #15 to #9.

So, given all of our needs (RB, OL, TE, WR, LB, FS), we'd give up basically our entire draft for an "iffy" QB prospect? Not a chance.

There is definitely a tendency for people to want the new, shiny thing. But, reality is, there is not one QB prospect in this draft that is a clear upgrade over Chad Henne. Look at all of these guys in the draft, and look at Chad Henne coming out of Michigan. If there was a lights out, great QB prospect, then yes, you can trade up to get him. But, all of these guys are flawed. And when you are projecting guys to go from a college spread to the NFL, it is too big a leap. In those college offenses, guys make 1 read, and then take off running. Having to read an NFL defense and go through progressions is a major, major leap for these guys, and you just never know if they'll be able to do it at game speed. And with those kinds of questions, you can't trade your whole draft just to get a guy to compete with Henne.

this is the perfect draft for us to trade down. there is a ton of DL talent which we don't need and a top guy will fall to 15, so one of the teams that wants DL help will want to move up and get him. That, plus the fact that anyone we would take at 15 is just as good as anyone we would take at say 22 (assuming we pick OL, or even RB (Ingram may be there at 22 also, or QB (only 2d round talant available assuming Cam and Gabbert go in the top 10), plus the fact we don't have ammo to move up but want extra picks = trade DOWN, not trade up this year.

Berkly you definitely make alot of sense. That is absolutely the smart way and the safer way to go. To Trade down. But we have played it safe for years and where has it gotten us? The Jets took a chance on moving up for the right guy and its done well for them with Sanchez.

But thats also easy for me to say when its not my job on the line. I see irelend thinking about more draft picks and not "Impact" draft picks becuase it increases his chance for more starters. If he doesn't hit on at least %50 of the picks he is done.

Also keep in mind Mark, nobody uses the draft chart anymore. Rookie salaries have thrown that chart out the window and teams now only get what they can get.

Exactly what I was going to say. I am not sold on Gabbert. I see him as an average nfl qb but only in a few years.

Hopefully all the maturity issues with Mallet are behind him. Word is from Petrino that he is coachable, loves football and people who studied film say he can move well in the pocket. Those were my biggest question marks on him.

My option would be to trade down a few spots and fill a neen position and grab Mallet if he checks out.

Marino was never mobile and was slow and terrible in play action fakes but could always slide around in the pocket to by time.

I don't want Gabbert even if he falls to 15 and same for Newton who is a problem waiting to happen. I would rather have Vince Young because he knows this will be his last chance to prove himself. Newton will still have to go through these things and may drag a team down with him.

That being said...no way we move up. The talent is just not there except for P Peterson, the two WR's or Von Miller and those are luxury picks for us because we have no great need there other than for a speed WR and it is not worth moving up for.

Too bad we don't have last years crop to choose from as we could take our pick from two stud TE's, stud C and G and RB.

Gronkowski, Gresham, Pouncey, Iupati and Best....

Gronkowski or Maurkice would look pretty good right about now!

Trade down is by far our best option right now.

I think drafting a QB gives the staff an extension even if it is just for hope for the future....and will not endanger their jobs for at least two more years.

RESPONSE: I'll keep this post on file. It's a win-win for me. Henne will be here next season. That's a fact. If he busts, no big deal. If he excels by being complimented by more talent, I'll throw this back in your face.

Did somone just ask why would NE trade up to grab Gabbert when they have Brady??

I don't know Brady is on his last contract. He is what 33? 34??

He has about 3 4 years left. NE has s.it for QB options, and has a TON of picks, so again a trade up to get a QB to groom for 3 year's or so is extremley smart. Look at Favre, and Rodgers.

Call it stupid, your stupid for suggesting that it be stupid.

I don't know, because he can. So your saying Ireland is the stupid one offering a trade up to acquire Gabbert when we have s.it to offer?

Or a stacked team, that has a ton of picks, and might really like a guy, and could care not about the F/A because they have two first round, and what two second roun picks??? I'm not sure how many picks they have, but if he feels he has a solid team, and likes a prospect then it makes all the sense in the world to move up to grabe what you want.

You don't know Belicheat, and I don't either. You don't know what he is thinking, but I bet finding a replacement QB is high on the what to do list.

One injury then they are screwed. Like you said he will be 34 already has a bumb knee, and come on.

Its not a stupid idea, especially since it has been reported that talks about this type of trade has went down. Could be another team but I mean who knows?

Here is NE's draft chart this year:
1st Round – #17 (OAK – Richard Seymour
1st Round – #28
2nd Round – #33 (CAR – 2010 3rd Round
2nd Round – #60
3rd Round – #74 (MIN – Randy Moss
3rd Round – #92
4th Round – #125
5th Round – #159
6th Round – #193 (NO – David Thomas

thanks Phinsfan, for saving me the effort.

"star" QBs never like to have a hot shot heir apparant lurking on the roster (see Elway/Maddox, Favre/Rogers). the Pats will likely take a QB at some point, but they sure as hell aren't going to trade multiple high picks and pay a big contract to get one. If locker or someone fell to the 2d round, then possibly.

Anyone wana make any wagers???

Bet a little cash to back up there opinion on this matter?

You say they won't do it because of uncertanty, like a lockout is going to last 3 to 4 years.

The Pats will most likely not be drafting this good again for awhile.

They got two picks in each of the first three rounds, and you two characters can only say they have Brady, and uncertainty of the CBA.

Hey its ok Phinsfan brought up some good points but I feel they are just mute.

Berkeley you just said they have Tom Brady, like thanks Captan obvious lol.

I mean come on Berk Phinsfan at least brought up the only thing that could make a case for NE to not do it, and even that is a stretch.

What do you think the Pats will do with the two first round picks then?

They can trade up still have a first round, second round, and a third round, and also pick up a top rated QB prospect.

Like your going to tell me that if we had there picks, you wouldnt do that????

Come on guy's don't let ole Brady blind you, it sucks if it is true, because they are going to be stacked.

I'll take the easy money. Any amount you want that the Pats don't trade up in the first round this year to take a QB. I think they will trade some of these pics away this year for next year, like they have done the last few years.

$40 bucks that out of these two teams it will be NE not Mia if the trade up happens.

Now if no one trade's up or another team other than Mia, or NE makes the trade then the whole $40 bucks is moot not mute." Thanks Phinsfan"

So pick if there is a trade up to the cowboy's, $40 bucks on Mia, or NE.

If it's another team rather than these two then no dice on the money.
