This morning at around 6 am PST, my email sent out a bunch of emails to everyone on my contacts because there were about 4 pages single spaced of "delivery failure notifications" to persons in my contacts no longer with valid addresses. It was obvious we've been Hacked.

I clicked on to one of the failure notifications and there was a message such as "Look at what an exciting thing I discovered" followed by a link.

I sent out notifications to everyone in my "contacts" that I'd been hacked and not to clink on any links in any messages sent out today.

Is there a greater threat than just some crooked company spamming my contacts on a one time basis?

Does that mean that the hacker has access to my files?

Should I change my email address?

If I do, JC, would I have to register again here?

It happened to me before. I believe it was because of my new phone email account.

I changed my pasword for email and deleted my contacts and haven't had problems since.

I'm sorry to tell you that I don't know much about the subject of hacking, other than the people who do these things should be subject to multiple public floggings with the wettest of wet noodles.

Changing your email address is something that I've known others to do in general, not specific to Phins.com. I've gotten several messages saying "I'm changing my email address because of too much spam/my ISP sucks etc." over the years." But I'm not necessarily recommending that, because I can't tell you whether that would work vs. how much a pain it would be to do.

It appears that you would NOT have to register again if you change your email address. Your address that is linked to your phins.com login can be changed by clicking "Control Center" then "edit email settings." I've never done this myself but it should work if you go to that location.

I will eventually be moving this thread to "phins.com" forum so that Curt would be more likely to see it quickly and offer any advice he might have.

Before you transfer the thread, JC, just saying that I agree with your feelings. My wife always complains about how I constantly rave and rant about there not being enough death sentences carried out.

She laughed today when I say that the only persons I hate worse than death row inmates are hackers and identity theives and that that is the only non-killing offense for which I would give the death penalty.

It's likely your system has a virus.

Update your anti-virus software. Scan your complete system.

Run all of the latest system updates.

Change your email password.

Delete and block any and all spam emails.

If no virus is found...download malwarebytes and run an additional free scan.

Increase your firewire protection.

or get a mac

Chyren, go to windows update, there is likely a bot inside your system that isnt being detected by your virus program. By doing your windows update, you should see a download of a malicious software tool remover... If you see that, then windows will solve it, by downloading the update and removing the bot...
You can also try changing your passwords for that email account as well. But if the malicious software is on your cpu then you are going to have to remove it before you see it stop... I had the same problem about a month ago, on one of my cpu's.

What on earth are you talking about.? Best Buy?, who is closing a bunch of stores? WalMart? Yep there's a couple rows of computers between the country music CDs and the gun section!

Look sammy, go to an APPLE Store. You'd said you live in South Florida right? They're in Dadeland, The Falls, Aventura, Ft. Lauderdale Galleria. You'll see all the nerds you'd ever want to beat up in your entire time as a bully at school. You can't miss them, they're wearing color-coordinated t-shirts and ID badges. And amongst the nerds, you'll see the best-designed, intuitive (even my parents use them), best-functioning computers in the world and ZERO crappy PCs.

OR, you can just keep repeating that mantra of yours and stick with your virus-magnet and live on in blissful computer ignorance!

I'm completely fine with the fact that PCs out-number mac computers. Crappy cars outnumber good ones too--it's like that with most things. But there's a reason why Apple is now a much larger company than Microsoft (arguably, Apple is the largest company in the world right now). It's because their product is superior.

I use a mac at home for past 5 years. Never crashed, never a virus. Never once installed anti-virus software. This was after using a pc at home for prior years of my life; had to go thru them every 3-4 years or so, becasue despite paying for "top" antivirus software, by the end of that time it was so bogged down with crap I couldn't even turn it off or on without taking 30 min.

Do the math.

I have both Macs and PC. they both suit their purpose... Macs, have spyware and bots that affect them. The webcaches get overloaded with different sites spyware at times... My wife uses her mac book pro to communicate in europe and european websites, and they have made a mess of that mac cpu at times...
How about, try bringing your mac into a big three accounting firm and let me know how that goes... Or try and bring your pc, into the world of profesional filmmaking, photography, graphic design or pro tools audio, and let me know how that goes... I prefer the PC online, for much more of the web has been designed for PC's... I use the macs to run real software. I use the pc to interect with accounting and business, etc.
SO all of this talk one is better then the other, is kind of foolish... It all depends on what you want to do with it... In some cases a mac is the wrong choices and in others a pc is clearly the wrong choice... Mac makes a superior quality and design cpu, but you also pay for that along with other issues such as, when my old G5 ran great and one day just died, power supply issues, and over $1700 to fix.. Same problem on a pc, $200 dollars. You fix the pc, the mac you throw away and buy a new $3,000 dollar mac pro....Big difference.... If i didnt need the mac to run certain software I wouldnt have bothered replacing it due to cost... Do you know how many iphone screens I have gone through... They suck with that design...lol....
If you are just browsing the internet and sending emails, hardly need for an expensive mac meant to run high memory and elaborates softwares with stability... Buy a cheap pc every 3-4 years and you are way ahead of the game...

Out of a million people 800K will buy PCs.

Like i said PC is a dam bully and mac or apple are the little kid who will always get pushed around. And that will never change.

SamSam, a PC is a ford, a Mac is a ferrari, the price diffrences are reflected in quality of design/craftmanship. Just because more people can afford a Ford doesnt make it a nicer car then a Ferrari, and hardly makes the Ferrari the little kid who gets pushed around IMO.
And I am typing this on my Ford, not my Ferrari...lol.

You are typing on a ford and im typing on my hugo......And thats another reason why pc will always exist.....

Why would you want to spend a million dollars on a ferrari when you can have a lexus for 30K and they both do the same thing.....

Thats another reason why PCs always beats out the macs or apples......................My coworker spent 1500 bucks for an apple laptop..

He could of had a dell laptop for about 550 bucks....

Hey i dont care...........If people want to be dumb enough to spend three times for something that does the same thing...Go on with it..

Here where i work we have 6 computers pcs connected to a lynksys router for the last 10 years..........And we havent had a single problem with them so far.

As far as viruses....If you have employees who are dumb enough to download the first crap they see and therefore you get a virus............what can i tell you.

When you download a program that has a virus on your great mac................you will be singing another toon. there is no such thing as perfect my friend.

SamSam, if you run pro tools on a PC or large video graphics creation, animation software etc, with online editing, you would notice the difference, and hate your pc... As I said it all depends what you are using the CPU to accomplish IMO. You dont take the ferrari around the corner and through the school zone, to drop of your kids at school, and you dont take the ford or the lexus to the track...
