This will be only the second time in Miami's history that they have had a #8 pick.

The only other time they had one they did pretty well with it.

Who was that pick?

Larry Csonka.

Not bad.

Hope this regime can get a guy that can do as well.

<chuckle> However, we already had Griese.

I know. I followed him to the Dolphins from Purdue. That's just my slap at the "gotta draft a QB" people.

I believe we still had not made the playoffs when we got the Zonk.

Those people on this board would have said, "Well it's obvious that the reason we haven't succeeded YET is because WE NEED A BETTER QUARTERBACK. Griese is not good enough. A BETTER QUARTERBACK would have won those games Griese lost."

And they would have said, "See we SHOULD HAVE CHOSE STEVE SPURRIER! HE WAS THE HEISMAN WINNER."

Chyren, sounds like you and I (and a few others) have been around the Fins for some time.

I am sure you remember the situation that Miami was going through with Spurrier and Griese, but for the "younger" crowd....

Joe Thomas (who was the GM at the time) was in a bind. Public pressure was on him to draft the Heisman Trophy Winner who was a "local" product (from the U. of Florida). Thomas wanted Griese. The 49ers solved Thomas' problem by drafting Spurrier before Miami's turn came up.

Looks like Thomas was right on that one.

Yeah, you're right, Cap. Now I remember that the 49ers grabbed him first.

The situation was vastly different back then to be sure, but all one needs to know today is if a QB has won the Heisman...don't draft him.

Griese was always the right pick, he was very accurate, smart, mobile enough, unselfish, and a leader...what else could you have wanted in a QB at the time.

What's funny to me, tho, is that during the "exhibition" season (that's the preseason for you yunguns <g>winking smiley, Griese looked like Tebow out there (throwing, not body type). I was saying to myself, uhoh! Besides, Stofa was the starter and he had a good previous season. Then the Denver game came, and it was Griese from then on.

Well, I read that as mainly a joke with a little bit of irony throw in. I didn't take it seriously.
