According to Todd McShay, NFL scouts and GM's have known for over a year that Tannehill would be a mid-to-high 1st round pick.
He said he was speaking with a high ranking NFL scout in September and the scout specifically said that Tannehill will be a high 1st round pick and all teams have already been eyeing him.
According to McShay, at the time he was caught of guard, and responded like "Ryan Tannehill? Really? I dont see it?".
But he said the high ranking scout swore that Tannehill would be a star at the NFL level and teams already had him on there radars.
well if we take RT, I hope the scouts that think he will be great are right, and the ones who don't are wrong. definitely a split difference of opinion about the guy.

It depends what defense we are running for me. He can be OLB by title in the 3-4 but his responsibilities would still be that of a DE. He would set the edge and rush the passer. mario williams and demarcus ware did the same thing last season. I think Ware only dropped into coverage a handful of times the whole season.

I agree. His upside is huge. His motivation issue scares me quite a bit so I didn't take him in my mock.

Same as Aldon Smith this past year. I agree, this would be ideal but we don't have a lot of depth at OLB/DE so I think he might play base downs if he gets up to speed. Of course dependent on our scheme.
I like Coples upside a lot for our defense. He can start at DE like mentioned above but if we can add another situational pass rusher in the mold of a DE/OLB at some point then I love this possibility: Wake DE, Coples 3Tech DT, Odrick 3Tech DT, and whoever we add at the other DE. That is a scary passing situations Dline.
1 - Ryan Tannehill, QB
2 - Mohamed Sanu, WR
3 - Vinny Curry, DE
3 - Sean Spence, LB
4 - Tommy Streeter, WR
5 - Trenton Robinson, S
6 - Josh Robinson, CB
7 - Tank Gardner, LB
Version 2:
1 - Michael Floyd, WR
2 - Brandon Wheeden, QB
3 - Vinny Curry, DE
3 - Sean Spence, LB
4 - Senio Kelemete, G
5 - Trenton Robinson, S
6 - Josh Robinson, CB
7 - Devon Wylie, WR/KR
With Wylie, I'd be willing to grab him as high as the 6th round. If he was a just a little bigger then even into the 5th. He's dynamic and fast as heck.

One things for sure, the research that Phinsfan2 did last year about where to shop for a QB opened my eyes, if not for that, i'd probably be screaming to wait on a QB and grab Weedon/Oswieler/Cousins in the 2nd or 3rd. I used to be a bargain basement QB shopper.

1. QB Ryan Tannehill
2. OLB/DE Andre Branch
3. OT/OG Jeff Allen
3. WR Mohamed Sanu (Gil Brandt says his stock has dropped from 2nd to 3rd rd in recent weeks)
4. WR Brian Quick
5. OT Jeff Adams
6. CB Shaun Prater
7. DE/OLB Donte Paige-Moss

I know this will come as a complete scock to you but Ireland disagrees.
From today's press conference:
"@ArmandoSalguero: Ireland says he considers offensive lineman an impact player if guy plays 16-games per season and goes to Pro Bowl."
Mark, I love your mock but I don't think Quick gets past the third or Prater gets all the way to the 6th round. I'm pulling for it though, those would be two steals.
Sorry but i just have to say no to Clemson pass rushers. They have almost all flopped in the NFL.
Da'Quan Bowers, Phillip merling, Gaines Adams.
To preface the draft I would like to sign FA Guard Jake Scott. he would plug right in at G and is a great pass protector.
I like the idea of taking a DE or OLB in the second though. Unfortunately the two I like will probably go in the last first. Nick Perry or Whitney Mercilus.
The problem this year, once again, is that we are on the wrong side of the cusp. There are 7 elite players and we pick 8.
I see no pass rusher worthy of the eighth pick. My man crush list includes David DeCastro, Brandon Weedon, Bobby Massie and Whitney Mercilus.
So...My dream scenario...
1. Ryan Tannehill, QB
2. Shea McClellin, OLB/DE
3. Donald Stephenson, OT
3. Ladarius Green, TE
4. Nick Toon, WR
I agree with Columbia with the exception that I don't think we get a chance at Melvin Ingram at 8 although it would be wonderful if we did so I would substitue Quentin Coples on the top of his post and go with the rest on the rest of the post.
Because, berk. Remember when I said that you gotta look at an offensive line, as far as protecting the quarterback, like a cup. If that cup has a tiny hole through which water leaks, then the cup is no good at all.
Well, a defensive pass rushing set-up that has one point of pressure, Cameron Wake, that is great but by itself can alone be handled meaning it can be blocked, is like having no pressure at all. Odrick is not providing that second point of pressure. We need more sacks. Particularly since, as BNF, would acknowledge, paying in the same division where the lady will kill you if you don't keep her under pressure and sit her on her butt occasionally.
If we could get by with only one good person at each position then last year we had Brandon Marshall at WR, Reggie Bush at RB, Pouncey and a little of Jake Long on the line, Cameron Wake rushing, etc., etc.,
You can't leave it there. Griese had Larry Little AND Bob Kuchenberg, he had Larry Csonka AND Mercury Morris, Marino had Duper AND Clayton, just one good player for each position doesn't get you into the playoffs, it gets you the no. 8 draft spot in the next draft.
So, although you NEED a quarterback, it can't stop there.
but why the assumption that odrick can't provide sacks? he had a 6 last year in his only year playing and was a 1st rounder. I just don't understand the assumption that he can't be that player and we need a DE in the first.
Seems like we are already giving up on the guy.

Sometimes another pass rusher can drive the quarterback into a sack by a defensive player who is not putting any pressure on himself. That may have happened 6 times when Wake's pressure drove quarterbacks into Odrick's hands. I don't know. I haven't looked at those 6 sacks.
I assume berk that what you meant to ask above is why "can't" instead of "can" Odrick be that player and that he had "6 sacks" not "a 6" last year.
I guess to answer your question, maybe the staff feels that Odrick was not a pressure guy but was just the guy who took advantage of Wake's pressure.
However, if you have TWO pressure guys, you increase the number of sacks and make it almost impossible to pass. We need to do that to Tom Brady, not just sack him fewer times when Wake drives him into Odrick's arms.
1) Qb Ryan Tannehill
2) DE/OLB Andre Branch
3a) WR Mohamed Sanu
3b) G/T Tony Bergstrom
4) WR Marv Jones
5) CB Shaun Prater
6) LB/DE Brett Roy
7) OT Bryce Harris
I don't buy it personally. Odrick is going ot be a hell of a player. he only played part time last year in something like 6 starts but even still was in a rotation. Thats one sack for every start. Langford, a very good player was let go b/c Odrick is better at rushing the QB and being around the ball. Remember the int from Brady?
I know we are going to be in a 4-3 set more this year but we still have Soliai, Starks amnd McD. We could use depth but don't need a starter from the high rounds. We could take a flyer on a 4th or 5th.
If Ireland drafts another 34 DE or 43 DT then he needs to start packing. Our defense is not a weakness. Sure you have to draft BPA...but we are in dire need of an offense. We have a glaring weakiness at RG and RT...not to mention WR and a needed upgrade at QB which we won't get in the form of another player this year.
If anything we need a DE/OLB but none are worthy of the eighth pick based on the data and question marks...size limitations etc. Lots of shorties...6'2 etc
We would be better off taking David Decastro and Brandon Weedon if we pass on Tannehill IMHO.
DeCastro would keep Moore upright and make life very easy for Bush. I can see him being in the Pro Bowl as a rookie.
also...I think Hartline turns the corner in this offense just like Jordy Nelson did in his 4th year making WR less of a high round need.
